Not sure if this is common knowledge or not. I've never paid attention to it, but I certainly found these results interesting.

.

A wooden arrow flies out of the shadows toward you!
AS: +516 vs DS: +458 with AvD: +23 + d100 roll: +2 = +83
A clean miss.
The wooden arrow disappears into the local environs.
>
You feel at full magical power again.
>think
You rub your chin thoughtfully.
>
A wooden arrow flies out of the shadows toward you!
AS: +516 vs DS: +460 with AvD: +23 + d100 roll: +68 = +147
... and hits for 21 points of damage!
Minor puncture to the left leg.
The scintillating white light surrounding the arrow fades some.
The wooden arrow ricochets away from you, landing nearby.

.

A wooden arrow flies out of the shadows toward you!
AS: +516 vs DS: +499 with AvD: +23 + d100 roll: +23 = +63
A clean miss.
The wooden arrow streaks out of sight!
>
A wooden arrow flies out of the shadows toward you!
AS: +516 vs DS: +520 with AvD: +23 + d100 roll: +91 = +110
... and hits for 4 points of damage!
Thrust glances off your knee.
Might be stiff tomorrow, but it's okay now.
The scintillating white light surrounding the arrow fades some.
Bad angle. The wooden arrow fails to stick in you.

Ambush pushdown depends on a hidden roll that depends on the difference (or lack thereof) in levels between the attacker and the target and the ambush skill of the attacker. It looks like sniping does the same thing from those shots, or something similar. It's pretty easy to overcome the variance in pushdown while ambushing (singling will do the job for pretty much everything like level), I have no idea if it's just as easy with sniping.

Both characters are level 100 and the archer has full ambush training.

You know.. one thought is that maybe I get additional DS based on the body part hit/aimed at?

Maybe the shots that missed weren't actually going to hit my leg if they had overcome my DS?

The hidden roll can play a big part in a normal ambush. I'm over 2x ambushing with enhancives at cap and I sometimes get zero pushdown against crawlers, which are only 103. I can't say if sniping is the same, but I don't see why it wouldn't be.

The target's perception matters too.

Do you get a random pushdown or is it all or nothing?

[EDIT: Though, I may be experiencing an all or nothing myself.. I don't have enough data points to determine if it's a random pushdown.]

It's random. As others have said it's influenced by a bunch of things but it can vary anywhere between all or nothing including everything in the middle.

There's pushdown from sniping? In five years I've always been convinced there isn't.
