View Full Version : Campaign Ads
This thread is about the current presidential ad campaigns. While I'm going to start it off by mentioning Bush’s latest ad it's not really meant as a podium against bush but rather a place to discuss the current Ads from both sides. So if you have issues or comments on Kerry ads or Nader ads or whatever feels free to discuss them here.
When I first heard about Bush’s ad was that it compared Democrats to Hitler. After watching that Ad for myself I don't think that’s what its intent was but the whole ad sort of confused me. It was his attempt to show Kerry’s supporters as the "coalition of the wild eyed" ie: Gore and Moore. But then it includes clips from moveon.org that compared bush to Hitler. But its part of this whole pessimism is bad campaign. But it’s basically a negative ad denouncing other people’s negative ads, at least in my opinion. On top of that generally you'd think a candidate wouldn't want to air ads comparing themselves to Hitler.
The ad to me didn't make any real points other than to say the people say mean things about me. It didn't make me like bush more or less and it didn't make me feel sympathetic either. I guess it just didn't make me aware of anything to change my opinion.
Anyway I would like to hear some other people’s opinions of the current Ad Campaigns from both sides.
If you’d like to see the ad yourself you can go to any of these sites
http://www.georgewbush.com
http://www.georgebush.com
http://www.bushcheney2004.com
But they'll just redirect you to www.georgewbush.com and it’s on the first page right when you enter the site.

Do political ads influence anyone? Most who actually watch them have made up their minds anyway id assume. I personally liked the ad you showed as it pretty much shows them acting like lunatics and do we want those types in office? Now i swing to the right and liked it and you swing to the left and dont. I am getting tired of seeing so many of these ads though sheesh. Is Minnesota important in this election or something? Its starting to slowly drive me crazier.
I'd wager theres a good deal of people on the fence. And then the people who need their minds made up for them. Those are generally who I'd assume they cater their ads to.

Im pretty sure the adds of Hitler were put in my the dems and then used by the republicans showing how nutty the dems are.

Too true,i always forget about the people who cant make up their own minds. Heres hoping those folks vote Bush! :)
Well sort of they are from a moveon.org ad I believe. So while that may have bee the intent, I find it somewhat comical that they would run an ad of himself being compared to Hitler.

I think the point of that was to show just how loopy some of the democrats have gotten. It would be like if the republicans in 1996 ran an ad comparing Clinton to Ron Jermey(God i hope they didnt).

Out of curiousity has anyone seen a Nader ad on tv? Does he do tv ads? Every third commercial seems to be Bush or Kerry but i dont think ive seen a Nader one unless i just tune those out or something.
I don't even see many Bush/Kerry Ad's but I've never seen a Nader ad.
Just a brief post cause I have to run.
I think its stupid how much money candidates raise for the sole purpose of endorsing themselves. Think about it. $200 million can go a long way towards much more.

I personally like his ad where he starts off something like 'I love America because I believe in the people of America' or something along those lines...
That one you're talking about is a little odd Tijay, but I think it is a unique method of action. He is basically showing everyone that he is aware of what his critics say and frankly it's dispicable how far some of them will go.
Think about it, if he himself is showing that others are comparing him to Hitler (which everyone who is sane knows is a ridiculous comparison), it comes off a lot better then if a mainstream ad funded by an opponent was comparing him to Hitler.
I dunno, hard to explain. We'll see how it works.

Also, does anyone else find John Kerry's ad where he is speaking to a room of about 20 people so amazingly bland and boring? Now I know I'm biased being a Bush supporter, but my dad who is on the fence of who to vote for agreed with me. That ad is terrible.

Trying not to be biased, but I haven't seen a Kerry ad that impressed me.
.
The only anti-Bush ad that impressed me was the moveon.org one using the child labors to represent future America.
Was well-done, despite the obvious exaggeration.

If we're talking about the same one, the health care one? It's boring but has a clear message I suppose.
I guess also to be fair since I posted the link to Bush's ad's here is a place on Kerry's campaign site to see his ads:
http://www.johnkerry.com/videos/
they are on the right hand side of the screen.

Living in Florida, we see these ads everyday. I think they both exagerate the truth.
One ad by Kerry though makes me laugh.. he's talking about health care for every person in America and that if he's elected President, he will make sure it happens........
Um.. wasn't Kerry in the Senate for the past 20 years? Why the fuck didn't he push for this prior to his Presidential bid? Is it something only a President can put forth?

Thanks for the link..
The ad called 'country' is the one I'm talking about. It's clear, but it's just horrible.
The ad called Heart for Kerry is one I actually thought was pretty good though, forgot about that one.
And if anyone actually cares about ralph nader you can go here:
http://www.votenader.org/
and click on media player, top right. And click on video.

Yea we were talking about the same one, so if it makes you feel any better as someone who is on the Kerry side of the fence I found it pretty boring too.

Unfortunately, Kerry's a boring kind of guy, only a step or two above Gore on the excitement scale. And while being exciting certainly isn't important in a president, it does help in getting elected.
As for the ads... They suck. Campaign ads are so much bullshit, no matter who puts them out. The majority are blatant lies and distortions and have nothing to do with any actual issues. Bush's latest? Typical. An equivalent would be showing the Abu Ghraib photos overlaid with Rush Limbaugh saying 'they were just blowing off steam' and then cutting to Bush with his Mission Accomplished sign. And Rush is hardly the worst, most fanatical Bush supporter out there.
Hell, we could use some quotes from the Bush supporters here and attach them to Dubya. After all, some of the ones claiming they'll vote for him also advocate blowing up all the 'sand niggers'.

I know plenty of democrats who say the same thing.
There is a difference between a supporter of someone saying something, and an entire website/foundation saying something.

Republicans had criticized the group MoveOn.org in January because it briefly posted an ad contest entry that linked Hitler and Bush. It showed images of Bush with text saying, "God told me to strike at al-Qaida," before turning to images of Hitler with the words, "And then He instructed me to strike at Saddam." The submission ended with the words, "Sound familiar?" on a black and white screen.
The group later said the entry was in "poor taste" and pulled it from its site.
The entire website which said they screwed up and took it down? And yet...
"We're using the video from MoveOn.org to show our supporters the type of vitriolic rhetoric being used by the president's opponents and John Kerry's surrogates," said Scott Stanzel, a spokesman for the Bush-Cheney re-election campaign.
So an ad that links Bush to nuking sand niggers, killing all of Islam, and college hazing 'tricks' involving sodomizing helpless prisoners would be fine then, according to the Bush campaign, since 'Bush surrogates' have said it.
Streets run two ways, you realize.
