Mage Charging

was wondering if the orb quality (value of orb gem) affects the charging? other than the duration of the charging period, does it affect the success probability or does the mage (age & training) affects the success rate only?

I think it does?

I remember using like an orb pink sapphire and being able to put like only 20 charges into something that should take 40.

It's been a long time, though.
