Decided to do some testing on the effects of gazing into aster opals. I've found 8 effects so far, but I don't know what they all do. They last about 30 seconds. Here are the activation and deactivation messages for each effect, along with the effects I've figured out so far. If anyone wants to try to figure out the remaining 3, your input would be welcome. I'm thinking two are +/- DS.

A fine tingle runs through your body. -20 CS
The tingling sensation recedes.

You suddenly feel more focused. +20 CS
The strange sensation recedes.

You suddenly feel more vulnerable, but you can't quite say why. -20 TD
You no longer have the eerie sensation of vulnerability.

A strange sensation causes the hair on your neck to prickle. +20 TD
The strange sensation recedes.

You feel a faint quickening of your pulse. +20 DS
Your pulse returns to normal.

You suddenly feel more vulnerable. -20 DS
You no longer have the eerie sensation of vulnerability.

A sudden feeling of lethargy creeps over you. Slow effect
Your movements return to normal.

The resistance to your movements seems to fade, and you find a quickening in your actions. Haste effect
Your movements return to normal.

You suddenly feel very clumsy!
You suddenly trip over your own feet and fall down!
You are injured in the fall! (minor injury)
You no longer feel so clumsy.

Strange noises from nearby draw your attention, but every time you turn to look, you see nothing. -20 AS
The strange noises fade away.

Is it possible the above two are haste/slow effects?

They are. It's standard haste/slow as if you know no 500's spells. Not sure if it accounts for the 500's if you are a wizard.

Are you sure? That was my thought too, but I tried using the WAIT verb and saw no difference. I'll check again.

Negatory.

You feel a faint quickening of your pulse.

You take a bite of your cactacae spine.
YUCK! That stuff tastes horrible!
Your right arm feels better.
Roundtime: 8 sec.
You only have one bite left.

If they're not haste, and I assume you checked them for AS/DS loss/gain, then they're probably something really obscure. Like +20/-20 perception or something bizzare that we probably can't easily track.

Poison Resist has similar messaging to quickened pulse. If not that, what about straight HP recovery?

The strange noises one almost has to be DS, right?

I didn't check for AS/DS yet because I was testing solo.

Yeah, the last one smacks of 'Sounds', but I would have to assume that since it's a ranger doing this testing, he'd have just said 'that one is sounds'.

I know there are haste and slow effects. Maybe it only works for the swim because that's where I've encountered these effects.

Ah hah!

A sudden feeling of lethargy creeps over you.
>eat spi
You take a bite of your cactacae spine.
Your right leg feels better.
Roundtime: 8 sec.
Roundtime changed to 10 seconds.
You have about 48 bites left.

Oddly, however:

>wait
Time drags on by...
Roundtime: 2 sec.

Another odd result. I just got "You suddenly feel more vulnerable." without the "but you can't quite say why" and it had no effect on my TD.

Found the haste effect

The resistance to your movements seems to fade, and you find a quickening in your actions.
Your movements return to normal.

And strange noises are not -DS.

Okay. Have everything but "strange noises" accounted for and updated in the original post. Any ideas for what to check? Not DS/TD/CS related. Next time I get it I'll look for spell hindrance on the off chance it's like sounds.

Is it possible the strange noises just add hindrance like sounds? since some of the other ones seem to be half ass version of their spell equivalents.

edit: duh

Strange noises is -20 AS. Thanks to Drew for helping me fill out the list.
