View Full Version : I Won the Jackpot Lottery, but...

So, there's this woman that works at McDonald's that says she has one of the winning tickets for the Jackpot Lottery with an estimated payout to her of $218 million before taxes. The rub is that she participated in a work lottery pool, and she was the one who bought the ticket(s) for the work pool. She claims that she bought her own ticket separately, and that the one she bought separately is the winning ticket, not the one that was bought for the lottery pool...
Now, her coworkers are confused and angry...confused because they don't know if she really has the winning ticket, and angry because if she does they think they are being duped.
If she has the winning ticket, I have to wonder if it's worth the drama and anger if there is no proof that the winning ticket is the one she bought on her own and not with the work pool's money...

The last place I worked at that had a pool did it right, the person who bought the tickets made photo copies of all of the tickets in the pool days before the drawing so everyone could see which numbers were part of the pool. And proof that y'know, the person is actually buying the lottery tickets and not just pocketing the money. Of course we worked at a place that had an office copy machine and no one thought anything of using it for non work related issues.
Still I would imagine the person would buy the tickets before the drawing and at least show one person the tickets to avoid this issue. If she really does have a winning ticket and it's just a single draw on a ticket I would imagine it's hers because wouldn't a work pool have several draws on one ticket?

Usually judge/jury will see thru the 'I brought this ticket separately and alone' BS:

Apparently, they pooled all the money together, she bought the tickets, brought them back, got them photocopied, and put them in the safe.
Later on, the manager gave her more money (unknown to the other employees) to buy more tickets "for the store", and she claims to have bought the winning ticket then. She did not follow the same process with the "store" tickets bought in this second batch. The winning ticket was not in the safe photocopies, but in the second batch - but no one knows if it was part of the extra money the guy forked out for the store, or if it was her. I'm kind of surprised the manager hasn't said he gave her money just for tickets for HIM.
She bought it at a 7/11 though, and apparently they should have video of when she bought it, and where in the batch of tickets she bought the winning ticket was printed. Who knows.
Oral contracts suck.

Basically, if it's true the Manager gave her extra money for "store" tickets, she will lose the case, and there will be a case.
Unless the second set of tickets were photo copied and given back to the manager -original or copies- She is screwed.
A Jury almost always decides in the groups favor.

It's a 15 way split. After taxes lump sum of $105 million. Worth the drama is the difference between $105 million and $7 million.
If the ticket is legitimate not the groups, I would say that $98 million is 'worth the drama'. That said, taking the managers money to buy more for the group and then buying some for her self as well at the same time and not following the same procedure, that makes her an idiot and I don't even want her to have $7 million.

Not even a week into being a millionaire, and already the little people are trying to pull her down. Fucking poor people need to learn their place!

None of that would prove whose money it was she used to buy the ticket, unless the store money was in a big bag with STORE MONEY written on it.

I tend to carry all of my money in a canvas bag with a dollar sign on it, just so everyone is clear on the situation.

I think a big point will be how she ordered them and how many.
If the store manager gave her $100 and she ordered exactly 100 tickets, it's pretty obvious. If she ordered 101 tickets, it's pretty safe to say that her ticket should be the one not on the slip w/ the others.
Either way, taking on the responsibility of collecting the money and buying the tickets is going to (and should) screw her.

I think we can all take away the fact that the linked article about the 77 mil and this 105 mil both going to people that aren't white resulted in fraud. Facts are facts. Hell I bet the video shows her wearing a hoodie and buying skittles at the same time she bought the lotto tickets.

If someone is sent out to buy lunch for the staff, and is provided money by the manager ... and is then sent out again for additional orders...
*Odds* are that the pooled / manager-provided $$ is gonna be spent before their own $$.
.
Ditto for buying additional lotto tickets with $$ provided by the manager.

Certainly one way to stick it to management :)

Or her purchase was on a separate transaction....

Unless the separate transaction took place at a different time/place. OR she put the manager Tickets into separate bag marked store tickets before she bought her own, and I doubt the video will really show it to well, She would have to have given the tickets to the manager Before the lotto was drawn. Otherwise it's gana be up to a jury to decide if she would lie about which ticket was for whom or not.
Who do you think a Jury will side with.. her, or the group?

If she can prove that the ticket that won was the one she bought with her own money, and not the one that the manager gave later, then she would be entitled to all of the winnings - agreed. All I'm saying is if she can't prove it, then she needs to do the right thing and split the winnings. 7 million is still a lot of money, in my opinion.
I can tell you one thing: if I had that responsibility, I would be extra careful to document my own purchase - more careful than documenting what I purchased for the store...100 Million dollars is a whole lot of money, and I would want to make sure everyone could plainly see that I won it fair and square.

If there's no proof that the ticket was hers and hers alone, I think a jury would side with the group. If I were on the jury, and there were no proof that she is the sole winner, I would vote for the group.
