Old git coming back has odd question

OK been forever since I played but my witch has some hollow gems in her bag and for the life of me I cannot remember how these were produced.
Some spell drained them and caused them to become hollow but damned if I remember what spell it was.
Any other old buggers out there remember?

I've heard that all hollow gems are orbs, but I've also heard someone else say they had one that couldn't be turned into a chrism. The couple that I've seen people bother to mess with had been turned into chrisms no problem though.

ANY gem can be used with Animate Dead and thus turned into a hollow gem. If a gem is an orb before it's hollowed, it retains the orb qualities and can be used as one for chrisms, charge item and holy receptacle.

Actually, could they have been used chrisms? I seem to remember chrisms before changes when used left behind a hollow gem.
