Ok I know i'm not supposed to be online, but i'm REALLY in a jam and I really need advice... Ok.. at my job.. I waitress.. and tonight, I had somone walk out without paying. It wasn't a huge bill, it was only 10 bucks. But when I went to a manager, he told me I was responsible for the money and it came out of my pocket. Now wtf? I'm like so if it had been 100 bucks I would have to pay for it? And he was like yeah, "its your responbility as the server" I'm like wtf? Am I supposed to knock them out if they go for the door? What the hell can I do to prevent it? So apprently if anyone walks out without paying I have to pay for it. And I'm really not wanting to work there because of this :( What should I do??

I would honestly call coporate hq and ask for their written policy.
http://applebees.com/contactus.html - though you may have a better contact from your end. The might be able to send you an E-mail with their policy, and they may let you get the information anonymously (so as not to let your boss know you're doing this).
You shouldn't have to catch the bill for anything you didn't comp/screw up. Just my opinion, but it's just common sense. The company needs to write it off or have better surveilence.

Call the Police?
If they order alcohol, use the carding as an opportunity to know their full name...
... so you know who to cite if you ever do have to call the police.
.
It should be a prosecutable crime... to walk off without paying... just like driving off from the gas station w/o paying is.
.
Editted to add:
Another idea would be to (if you can't physically restrain them from leaving) is to shame them, by yelling really loud "HEY, you didn't pay your bill!!!" as hopefully the embarrassment will force them to stop from leaving. Especially if there's others in the restraunt that they know.

I wasn't right there when she walked out, she did it after I gave them the bill (seperate checks) and her one friend paid and I gave change and the other women at the table had their money sittin on the tip trays, I didn't notice till I went to pick up all the bills that there was missing from one.

Could it have been someone walked by and picked up the cash that the lady left? Not that it makes your circumstance any better, but it could have been that she left the money and a walker-by snatched it up.

Stay tuned next week for another thrilling episode of "Dear Abby", when we delve into even more nonsensical questions whose answers should be painfully obvious such as "Help! You might also want to look into work laws. I don't know if they are federal or state specific laws down there but up here we have specific laws that determine this sort of thing.
When I was in highschool I used to work at a gas station and whenever I was short at the end of my shift, I had to pay the difference from my own pocket. My check would be handed to me every week in an envelope. Handwritten on the envelope would be: (amount earned) - (total short for the week) = (amount on the check). No where on the check itself did it say money had been withheld. My mother suspected it might not be legal but I really wanted to keep the job so I told her not to worry about it, that I would just be more careful. Eventually it went too far (my "shorts" also included people who left without paying. Needless to say that at 25-50$ a tank, it can seriously dent a minimum wage check) and we did look into it. It was definitely illegal and after I had quit, I filed a complaint against the owner of the station.
All that to say, there are resources out there. The coporate HQ is probably a good start as they would definitely want to follow the law and would come down hard on individual franchise owners who don't.

Every place that I've worked at, if your table walks out you get stuck with the bill. Which fucking SUCKS if you ask me...but I've literally seen servers chase people down outside the restraunt to alert them to the fact that they "forgot" to pay the bill.
If you can catch someone quick enough I say definitely call them on it. Why the hell should you be the one to pay when someone else was a dumbass? I can understand not leaving a tip if you did a shitty job serving, but pay for your fucking meal.
Don't hesitate to track someone down, and be polite. "Sir, how did you want to pay for your meal? I left the check and there was no form of payment." Clearly he'll be upset but he wont take it up with the manager simply because he was caught walking out on the bill and will likely pay it on the spot to keep from being pointed out as a cheapskate dasher.

I want a taser for my job! Damn that sounds like fun...
And theft of a meal/service is a prosecutable crime I would think. Or should be if it is not. Sucks that you have to pay for it. If that is Appleby's policy they are twits.

Man, need avise for how to operate the toilet now?
Gf is waitress while studying too, and she pays the difference if her balance doesn't work. Or she pays the bills that people won't pay if they run away.
Best way she figured out how to solve that: use your damn brain and remember them. Nothing is worse than humiliation in public.
Still worth the 250$ per day, at least for her.

Because she is what, 20? All her posts lately are questions that could be answered by your own damn judgement.
Eventually, in life, you need to stand up, look around you, and go on.
Man man man. How about asking directly her boss? Her co-workers? Calling the information of work's law (or whatever you call it)?
It would had taken, for the boss and co-wokers, 5 times less the time it would take to write the post.
p.s. Never been proud of doing something, alone, and felt the satisfaction that you made the right decision?
p.p.s (An important one) before taking a job, be sure TO ASK EVERYTHING about it. That way, you don't get caught in "difficult" situations and look like someone that isn't ready to have such a job.

X, have you, personally, been a waiter? (refrains from any frogs leg jokes) You think you would be able to keep an eye on every single table you have to cover to make sure noone's skipping out on the bill EVERY time? How are you going to make sure they're paying if you need to go into the kitchen to get orders? Not to mention the people are probably WAITING for you to go into the kitchen so they can leave, and most probably have a plan of: one person leaves, then slowly one at a time everyone is gone.
Shit happens. It sucks that wait staff gets stuck with the bill. Would you feel the same way if your girl has a table of 8 people who run up a $500 tab skip out on the bill?

My gf is one. And one in one of the biggest restaurant here.
Been 16 months, and it happened three times. 3 times. One of those bills was a big 45 bucks. Damn annoying, but it goes with the risk
(as being a policeman and knowing you can be fired/arrested if you hurt an innocent while chasing someone, as too many exemples).
Working = taking risks.
Any boss can "prevent" that (in some percentage) by not allowing the waitresses to go into the kitchen.
And it is considered stealing, 10 bucks... but 500? call the police right away (hope he has cameras).

She could probably solve more of the world's problems by just taking a bat to Xcalibur. Then people would adore her and give her Louisville Slugger endorsement deals, and she'd never have to work as a waitress again.

Are you denying that you voted yes for yourself?
And no I'm not going to post the list of people who voted because some may have done it anonymously which is why they may not have posted.
For someone who doesn't care who likes them or not, you sure are making a big deal about who voted and making the yes amount your signature.

Eh, no. Some people that I won't tell their names because they said it more than often said I created names to raise the yes in question.
I do not care.
Yes, I voted yes because in that case, I like myself.

-edited to add: Jenisi, sorry about your situation. There really isn't much though that CAN be done to ensure a person doesn't skip out without paying, that is short of not allowing them to leave the table until you take their payment. It happens quite frequently, I know when I was in Junior High and High School a lot of kids would go to Perkins or Friendly's and skip out like that. I'd take the suggestion of others and ask your manager or maybe other servers who've been there a while what do they do to help avoid that.

Being as I was the first one to *bash* you in this thread, I'd like to say that I only thought your comments were rude and unnecessary. Someone has a question or wants an opinion, they ask. If you see that as a sign of weakness, then keep it to yourself and don't be an ass.
So for some reason it's not ok to ask a question about someone skipping out on tips, but it is ok ask for help in learning English.

It would take me more fingers and toes than I have (I have 10 of each in case that escapes you) to count the number of people who I KNOW are irritated and sometimes offended by the things you post, either because they told me or they posted as much. Look at the number of people who jump your shit when you respond to a thread. "Normal" responses don't get that kind of reaction.
You cannot possibly be stupid enough for that to be escaping you.

Your laws clearly suck. If someone breaks the law (i.e. takes something without paying - often called stealing) it is their fault. They are responsible.
If your laws blame the victim of the crime for the crime itself, it explains a lot about your little "quirks".

That's the beautiful thing about message boards and forums. Once something gets posted publically on these boards for all members to see, any and all member(s) have the right to respond to it. If you want to say something to someone and not risk others responding to you...you're better served using the U2U feature, or sending them an IM, or e-mailing them, so on and so forth.

Alright, X, let's take a look at this.
You responded to Jenisi's honest request for advice by being a shithead, and being rude. If you get flamed for that, that is your fault.
You responded to Maimara's thread about me by implying I was fat. You can deny this all you want, but it's no secret you like pushing buttons. If you get flamed for that, that is your fault.
You told me twice in two different threads that you think I'm unhappy with my life. If you get flamed for that, that is your fault.
You keep saying dickwad things in other threads that offend and irritate people. IF YOU GET FLAMED FOR THAT, THAT IS YOUR FAULT.
If you make a nice normal thread like, "how do I plant a rose garden," or something along those lines, I doubt anyone would flame you. If they did, that would NOT be your fault.
Too bad you're incapable of normalcy.

That's your perception. I recall seeing someone said she was on a roll after 2 tattoos... That's being shithead?
I think she should just get better knowledge about her job before getting into that said job, as I said later.
I never implied you were fat (at least on the forum), you can stop playing the victim now about that.
People that are irritated = same that would turn a thread about: "do you like X or not" into a bashing thread even if I did not posted once in it.
You don't need reason to do what you want, but that doesn't mean I will accept it.
I prefer being what I am to be normal, by the way (if that word mean being normal)

I will agree that bashing someone's family member is rather unnecessary. I will also state, however, that ANY kind of personal bashing on someone is unnecessary as well.
Xcalibur has a knack for picking on people for their personal choices. However what he doesn't seem to understand is that personal attacks are not acceptable, regardless of the target.
When you attack someone for their online relationship, not only are you insulting them, but also the person they're having the relationship with. When you say "your love life sucks" to a married person, you're also making implications that their lover/spouse sucks as well. You need to see the entire picture when poking fun at them for something that you don't agree with.
If you present something here, be prepared for it to be used against you. Do I think it's right? No, I don't really think so. However when you push people to find a reason to get back at you for all of the bad things you've said to them, you give them no other alternative but to use something that you don't want them to use. If you have free will to judge people for their life, they have an equal right to do it as well.
Xcalibur

I understand but cannot agree with that, as if we follow this logic, then I could insult anyone's family when I disagree with someone.
That would only make matters 10 times worse.
I know I was wrong with Adredin and I said it, on the contrary of somes.
CrystalTears

Apparently you're not listening to me. Personal attacks of ANY kind are not necessary. When you attack something/someone that is personal to them, whether it be their mother, their daughter, their dog, their computer, it's an insult. The target is irrelevant.
Ergo saying to someone that being Democratic is stupid is insulting to them, and you hearing someone say something about your son is insulting to you. It's all personal attacks.
-------------------------------------------------
By the way, since you seem to like using me as an example for these insulting things, let's make one thing clear. I wouldn't have this hissy fit when a flame goes in my direction. I take it, accept it, learn from it and move on. I make mistakes and I take my lumps for them. I may not like it, but to say that I wouldn't "allow" it is false.
You'll also notice that I'm very careful with the personal information I divulge on the boards. Those things that I mention are things that I can take criticism for. Then again, I take insults here most times with a grain of salt.
I'll be the first one to admit and agree that several times in the past I was very bad at taking criticism, but with time, I've grown a thick skin. My job both here as an admin and as a real job of customer support helps. I also won't let on publicly when someone gets to me. I'll talk to my friends if necessary. But I try very hard to never show that anyone here will get the best of me. Ain't happening.

I understand. Totaly. But I cannot agree with that.
You say I am stupid because I think being macho is cool. So I feel that it's a personal attack. I, then, retaliate saying your daughter is bla bla bla.
Using personal perception as an excuse cannot work, it's just asking for troubles.

You know what, don't even TRY to say that you stick with the topic because you most certainly will not. Someone will be talking about how much fun someone had at a conference and you come in with a comment about how fat people have nice voices too. Someone else will comment on something in the game and you float in with a comment about their online relationship.
You use people's personal life against them ALL THE TIME. When you stop doing that kinda crap with other people, then I'll listen to what you have to say. Right now you just scream hypocrite.

Totaly depends on the context. But my answer will probably back you as it will, again, be a matter of personal perception.

Rest is just a matter of perception, as I said.
