Is Gemstone really going to be re-named Stormhammer? If so, who said this... AND WHY?

No. That's the name of the Front End. Like eScape, or Wizard.

No, it's not. The temporary name for the Wizard used for Beta testing is called Stormhammer.

The real new wizard will be called Storm Front.

As well as a computer game company of the 80's and is probably still around.

Stormfront is a pretty common sounding name. It's not like it's unique sounding and then Simu used it. For every common sounding name, there will be a good person using it and a bad as well. I'm sure the phrase "Paulina's pretty petunia petals" could belong to some psycho guy. :P
