I'd like to solicit advice and/or personal experiences any of you might want to share about making home movies or personal videos. I've never made one and I have no equipment at all so I need advice on what kind of camera to get. My friends and I have been saying how much fun it'd be to make a funny video for ourselves and our families but none of us has any clue about what accessories to get with the camera or if the features we want come with a camera, like adding music to a video or other special effects or if we need to buy them separately like special software or whatever. I want to get a decent camera that takes good quality video and, although I'd like to keep the price down I will spend a bit more for quality. Anyway, any advice you have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

While I agree some questions are very LMGTFY, but asking for personal advice from the PC should not be one of them.

Yeah, I know, bit lazy of me but there is a LOT of information out there. Just hoping someone here has some advice.

Start with a smartphone and windows movie maker. If you meet with limitations, look to extend from there.

Highly likely that there is better info on a dedicated camera/movie maker site than the PC. See the "I'm building a PC" threads for reasons why.

Guess I need to upgrade the free flip phone that I've had for a decade. Just downloaded that windows movie maker though, thanks for the tip.

So I decided to go for a regular camcorder. Since I don't want to contribute to a Skynet situation, I don't like to mix my technologies.
I bought the Kodak Playsport since I want something really sturdy and waterproof because I'm a klutz. It's really easy to use too. Even my dog figured it out. He had a message for you though:

(it's my very first attempt so not exactly Scorcese quality)

I've been meaning to respond to this. If you have any questions about hardware/software for this sort of stuff shoot me a pm. Its been a couple of years but I shot and edited video in the AF on both PC and Apple platforms, as well as Avid editing suites.
One tip I can give you is make sure to white balance, your lighting is a bit warm in that video.

That's cool, thanks. I had a lot of fun with this but I'm sure I made the process harder than it needed to be. I'm going to play around some more. Ace does requests if anyone wants a video. It'd be good practice for me too.

Oh, and shooting wise, it's usually best to not frame your target dead center, try off center.

Check out these tips, they are all pretty invaluable.

That's extremely helpful. I was going to try some action shots with the dog. He's really good with a frisbee but I need to get a good tripod because I'd be throwing the frisbee. Won't be able to do much until next weekend though.
