I want to start a halfling bard.

I'm not too worried about stats or training. I've read a few hours of material here (thanks everyone) and I'm pretty sure my training plan is good to go.

I plan on using polearms.

Any recommendations regarding hunting when young, societies, polearm use, songs/spells, etc would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

You can't put an OP race with OP profession! oh well at least you not using bows. thats what I wanted to do

that would be pretty imba. I've heard stories about them open archer bards... and they are good. :P

Seems like a halfling would benefit a great deal from using armor weighing in at only a few lbs.

When it comes to playing one, I played (scripted) my low level bard basically as a warrior. Also, get cman precision and use a polearm that can do puncture.

I'd say a halfling bard would do way better with polearms than open ranged. Unless of course you're talking near/post cap (which isn't a particularly useful discussion in a "starting a new bard" thread).

Got it. Thanks.

DaCapn, you mentioned to get precision ranks. Would you suggest anything in addition to this? Is trip worth looking into?

Cman feint, cman charge, cman focus....then all cmans for defensive purposes. At early age feint would help alot so you wouldnt have to use mana on 1005.

I change and tweak this every so often but this is what is at 5 ranks never changes.
At 202 Cmans
Skill name Mnemonic Ranks
Combat Movement cmovement 2
Combat Focus focus 5
Sweep sweep 1
Feint feint 5
Charge charge 5
Cheapshots cheapshots 1
Subdual Strike sstrike 3
Side by Side sidebyside 3
Cunning Defense cdefense 5

I remember charge and feint not working great on my halfling paladin when I briefly used polearms.

So not sure if the race size is a big impact on that or not.

Feint sucked when I was a younger paladin, but I was dumb and didnt have as many ranks as possible in it by 30 trainings.

I read the description of Feint and it doesn't have size as a component, it would make sense if Charge does much like tackle, but If you are going to be good at feint then charge would be after 24 cman ranks (rank 4) at least. Plenty of time to figure stuff out after that.

I used charge some with my (giantman) bard. I found that I would have rather just attacked or used spells. The RT is shorter and results were often better.

It doesn't help that sonic gear doesn't seem to flare on most/all/certain(?) CMs. Shield bash is one that it doesn't work with. I basically threw away the idea of using offensive CMs with my bard when I had him trained for polearms. Especially after getting things like 410.

That makes sense. With a polearm, you are probably more interested in defensive CM's.

Thanks for the advice all. I will let you know when I come up with more questions. I'm going to start the new bard this week.
