I've used an accent for many years, and it sometimes seems to inspire RP from other people, which is very important to me.

What's your opinion on using an accent in GS? Like it, hate it, don't care...whatever.

To those who've met Demonea, I would also like to know if you find her hard to understand or not.

I've interacted with Demonea in the Rogues guild and never once had a problem. Also, no hugging.

I think they add to RP while character to character.

I dislike when they are used on the amulet.

I hate when they are used on a message board.

Accents definitely add to a characters charisma and roleplaying viability. As long as it's consistent I think its definitely a benefit and does allow for other people to 'want' to roleplay with you.

Considering the influx of snerts in the game, I'd say someone who takes out the time to give their player some added flair with an accent is ok with me.

I've heard this before, and I use the accent on the amulet only because it feels to awkward for me to have her speak without her accent. It makes me feel that I've stopped roleplaying her if I "turn it off".

I agree, as message boards are OOG and shouldn't overlap into the game.

It always means alot when people remember the little things. It shows more of who cares to RP with others and not just flaunt their own character.

Give us a sample of her accent!

I've seen some that are well done and others that really take me too damn long to figure out to properly interact with them.

I understand her words just fine. I'll never understand her :) I always enjoyed her accent, to tell the truth. I think it adds flavor to the character.

Demonea is an awesome roleplayer, although I haven't noticed her accent yet. My character loves roleplaying with her. She is also one of those people who won't take in-game conflicts or differences and turn it OOC.

Jorddyn had better get back here soon before Demonea does horrid things to her man! :P

I LOVE interacting with Shalla, as she is a wonderfully played, superiority-complex Dhe'nar. The encounters that she and Demonea have had are some of my most memorable.

He'd enjoy it :whipit:

You have my blessing to do so, as I don't foresee her returning any time soon.

I promised not to tell, or I'd comment!

On topic, the only accents that bother me are the ones that come and go and change hugely from minute to minute.

I agree with the message board comment.. but disagree with the amulet.

The way I see it.. if I had someone like Sean Connery projecting his thoughts into my head.. would they be in perfect american english.. or would they be as I hear him speak.. in his english tongue? If I heard Snoop Dog.. would he all of a sudden not use eubonics and speak like an English major?

I don't believe they would.. I think the way they speak would be the same way I would hear them in my mind. If they didn't... how the heck would I recognize them?

Only time Tayvin loses his accent is when he's talking in halfling. (and of course the boards)

Terrific. Now I keep picturing Sean Connery and Snoop Dog carrying on a conversation about mystery backpacks...

Oh and its annoying ;)

Like, if I ask you how you are doing.

I find Tayvin to be a riot.. up until the point where he burns Falgrin's beard and other body hair.. then he's a fucking bastard.

I RP Kad much the same way. He doesn't speak common very well and would prefer to speak in giantman. Kad also doesn't use any pronouns. I should have thought about that one for a bit because, 3 years down the road, its annoying as hell.

Now that I thought about it.. I don't think I ever encountered anybody who posts here in the game, much less roleplayed with them except for Demonea.

Edit: Er, I hunted with Rangerd, but he blames me for not watching out for his other character while he MA. :bleh:

The accents that are extremely annoying are the ones that make people sound like babies.

Gemlynn had more of a hick accent, but it wasn't always easy to portray that. I'm still thinking of ways to make it sound right and still be understandable to pull off the redneck quality. Advice and hints would be helpful.

I don't mind accents, except when they are REALLY thick and done so phonetically that you have to read it a few times to understand it.

Agreed, nothing gets my goat more than this.

I could never really do an accent (my only character wouldn't have one anyway) because I couldn't do it all the time.

I like Thedwar's accent pretty well, it's fairly standard I guess, but he always sounds like what I figure a dwarf will sounds like. I think the number one rule of accents is consistency.

I admire people that are able to use accents consistently in game. Even the one's I have a hard time understanding. It definitely is a positive addition to the game in my opinion. I want to try it with one of my characters but I am afraid people will point and laugh.

If you want to try an accent, here's how I did it:

I started with working a few of the simple words ("ye", "aye", "thee", "nae", etc.) into her normal speech.

Slowly, I began changing a few MORE words ("kin", "na'er", "wit'", "p'haps" ) that I used more often.

I eventually refined it by replacing the ending letter of some words with an apostrophy, where it sounded right in my head.

Now, it's completely habit and it's harder to type her speech WITHOUT the accent.

I have never had a character with an accent. The only one I hated was Selanbradford's french accent.

My character usually cannot understand those that speak with an accent. He will also look down on others for not being able to properly speak the language.

Always had a "french" accent in gs. A real one, though, not the one that Selanbradford had and was an insult to all breathing living things.

It takes me a few extra seconds to decipher what Demonea says, but I don't mind. It also took me awhile to figure out what "ken" meant when used by Tayvin.

What I do mind is when I see someone get sold and then change the way they talk entirely. And people who keep up accents only every now and then or when there's a GM around. Annoys the crap out of me, either be consistent or don't do it.

I bring my bronx accent.

Hammerrhead clearly asks, "Fair thee well, mah nizzles."

I used to love Tallybelle's accent.

I used to RP that I didnt understand a word of it, which was kinda almost true to RL (had to really concentrate to figure it out). She was fun though. She would RP trying to explain what she was saying

One character uses contractions... one doesn't. I have two others that use accents but they are not the same accent. I really have to watch who I'm playing. I call it 'falling into' my character.

Ah dew lowe tah use mah accaunts.

A little exaggerated, but close to how one of my char's talk... I find it rather bothersome after a while though. Thankfully that doesn't carry over to sylvan.

Chadj don't speak like that though :)
