View Full Version : To post, or not to post?

Recently I tried to obtain some information on a character that is being sold and was denied because I have so few posts. Apparently, it seems 'shady.'

I rarely post because I use this forum to find information. There seems to be a lot of bashing and abuse in several of the threads, and although I may read some of it, I try not to join in. I also don't see a reason to post random hunting logs, or logs showing what an idiot someone is.

I know I'm not the only one that this shadiness will effect, and I'm not trying to tick off the person who said it. I merely want to know why others may or may not post. I've seen people with thousands of posts who really add nothing of value and are just plain assholes. So what makes them better than someone who chooses not to post much?

It's a forum. It's where we enjoy tearing eachother to bits, loosely advising people to commit suicide and sometimes, just sometimes talk about Gemstone.

Make up your mind. Are you asking why people do or don't post or are you asking why people with a fuck ton of posts are better than you because you're pissy you got burned?

I know it might be frustrating for you as a buyer to be denied because of low posts, and I'm sure the seller isn't pinpointing you out to be shady, they are just being cautious.

Though often posts are, indeed, specious and pointless, that's not why the seller was asking for a posting history. Intellectual contributions or not, posts (and especially a lengthy posting history) establish a virtual identity and existence for a poster. The credibility of that identity is what assures a nervous seller. It's purely an ethical argument -- an argument based on someone's character.

It's similar to buying a car from someone you work with versus some random bum on the street.

I'm not pissy I got 'burned' because I didn't. I'm merely voicing my thoughts, and wondering what reasons others have for not posting very often. Drayal, you have a lot of posts, but that doesn't mean you're trustworthy or untrustworthy. (And I'm using you as an example, because thus far you have the most posts of those who have replied.) I'm also pointing out that quantity does not equal quality. (Oh, and I'm upping my post count in the process.)

While it won't help in this particular case, something to consider for the future.

Start out with small purchases and work your way up if you're interested in high-end items or something like a character sale. One thing I love about this forum is the market community is very quick to give positive feedback for sales and to vouch for people that they've done good business with.

Yes but... as someone with an established history, you could ask around about Drayal and talk to people he has done business with. That would help you decide to trust him or not.

Whether or not Drayal is trustworthy isn't the point, in number of posts. The assurance that Drayal is very likely Drayal and not an alt of mine however, is the point. That's what the seller was trying to establish - are you a legitimate person interested in the character, or are you an alt of a known scam artist trying to sneak in under a different handle?

You can counter the issue you're dealing with by revealing who you play in game, or providing the names of more established posters who who know you and are willing to vouch for you. It's just like the real world in that sometimes it's not what you know but who you know.

You know, this is only semi-relevant to this post...since I don't know the poster...

...but I'm amazed how often in any kind of business transaction how folks will often take an "I'm right" "You're wrong" mentality.

If your goal is to buy a character, and his goal is to sell a character but he's either skeptical or wary for some reason...it's not that he doesn't want to sell you the character. It's that he's unsure about getting the money...

Solve THAT problem...find a go between that has a great reputation and let him "hold the money" like a trusted friend holding a bet for a football game. There's plenty of non douchebags on this forum ( well not really, but at least a few who are helpful and wouldn't dick someone over )...and if you read the forums all the time you'd know that.

Rather than be upset about post counts...solve the fundemental problem of completing the transaction...

Established reputation. Even being an opinionated asshole could establish that said person, while being a jerk, is someone that you can trust to deal honestly. If they've established that they can not be trusted, then obviously people wouldn't deal with them.

Anyone can make an account and post 1 to 15 times to pull a quick scam and scram.

Message boards are faceless communities. You're judged by your actions(what you punch in with a keyboard). People can't instantly judge you by race, gender, age, religion, sexual orientation, etc. People gauge who you are based on the collection of your thoughts. A couple random posts will leave most people asking, "Well who the hell is this guy?"
