Hmm, I hope his sister doesn't come to power. Bitch is crazy!

Does anyone believe that Obama will seek to renew diplomatic efforts with whoever comes to power, or will they just sit back and watch the crazy train cruise on by?

It all depends on who comes to power. Kim Jong-Un is viewed as pretty moderate (compared to his father). Kim Kyong-Hui, Il's sister, is fucking bashit crazy. She was named commander of the army when Jong-Un was named successor, but it has been thought that she would try and wrest power from Un after Il's death. As of yet, it seems like she is going to support and "mentor" Un. Who knows exactly what will happen, but Hui is a very scary individual. Russia and China expressed concerns over her being named commander. Even some North Korean generals openly defied Il after she was named commander. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out.

Skip to the end, am I going to die in a nuclear exchange?

Il named Un as his successor. It really depends on what the military wants to do though.

He named him his successor, then decided he wasn't sure about it anymore. That was a few months ago. Not sure what happened after that.

He never said he wasn't anymore and was still at the date of Il's death his chosen successor. Either way, it doesn't matter. The military could just say fuck them and make one of it's own Generals the new leader.

Presumably ... or rather, hopefully... the transition period underway in NK will be a positive concrete step towards the political unification of Korea under SK (ie reformation of Germany, headed by West Germany).

Somehow I doubt this will ever take place. Not saying I wouldn't WANT to see it, though.

People said the same thing about Germany...

Un was hailed as the great successor as NK reported the death of Il.

If the military takes power, Un will likely remain the "great leader" in name only as a puppet.

This is very likely. Hui and her husband are much more powerful than Un.

People said the same thing about Germany...Once Sigmund Jähn took over it was all downhill, though. North Korea doesn't even have a space program, they're just not comparable.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Sen. John McCain said Monday the world is better off now that North Korean leader Kim Jong Il has died and predicted that the dictator would join the likes of Adolf Hitler "in a warm corner of hell."McCain's political colleagues, including GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney, joined the prominent and outspoken senator in saying bluntly that Kim will not be missed after decades of oppression and threatening the world with his nuclear program."I can only express satisfaction that the Dear Leader is joining the likes of Gadhafi, bin Laden, Hitler and Stalin in a warm corner of hell," said McCain, the top-ranking Republican on the Armed Services Committee.

Excellent way to encourage the new leader to take a moderate approach, and foster the possibility of cooperation between NK and the US. If the sister takes power whatever, but the son was supposed to be less nuts.

Those silly Swiss.

My eldest found this funny ... being a K-pop freak (along with several other Asian genres).

A Swiss tabloid made Kim Jung Un the cover story. Unfortunately they used a stock photo of a boy band member (Super Junior) named Kim Jung-woon (stage name Yesung).

Now if I could convince her to use headphones.
