View Full Version : Stat placement ideas

I'm looking to make a forest gnome ranger because it looks fun. What I need are some ideas for stat placement.

Training would be as follow:
1-2x Armor
2x ranged
2x ambush
2x perception
2x stalk/hide
1x spells
2x FA
2x Survival

I'd appreciate input on the matter, keep in mind this doesn't need to be for super growth he won't see past 30 (I'm realistic) so the stats need to be placed so they give enough points and grow some but I don't want to suffer early for no reason.

Heck I'll probably just OHE/Shield him for the first 10-15 lvls then insta-migrate him.

Thanks in advance.

You forgot some biggies...

Harness Power (You will need mana)
Physical Training (You will need hps)
Climbing (at least 4 ranks)
Dodging (You will need some chance of not getting hit)

Have you even tried to put it through Tsoran's spreadsheet yet? I don't think you will have enough points off the top of my head to do all you want.

Possibly.

Yeah, those are biggies. What I did to compensate was to drop perception/ambush to 1.5x, and go up to armor only to doubles. It sucks, but ranger archers are pretty tough.

Forgot, he will 1x PT and 1x dodge also I had the points for that after just tossing some numbers in. I've never played a ranger so I don't know what will or will not work for a ranger stat wise. HP I should be able to get 2 ranks every 3 lvls.

My ranger's only 30.. but he had enough to do it all and still get into brig. Not sure if he is fully trained for it yet (I'll post his stats later tonight) but splash on some ranger strength and wizard strength.. and I have no problem using a longbow in 3 seconds.

You don't need 1x dodge, 3/4 Mobility will make it up.... you should consider going .5 combat manuevers too, to take advantage of mfire and stuff like that when it comes out. Sending mana is a nice advantage too, so don't forget spirit control.

Carl Spackler
06-11-2004, 11:50 AM
Also, you can 1x survival and 1x FA and you'll be more than fine, remember you have the skinning spell, it really comes in handy

to take advantage of mfire and stuff like that when it comes out.

Why bother with mfire? Unless you can aim at multiple targets, it'll be pretty useless, since the first shot should be a kill or a stun.

Carl Spackler
06-11-2004, 12:15 PM
If the first shot is only a stun and not a kill, then the multiple arrows would have a use... would they not?

Artha
06-11-2004, 12:17 PM
Sure, but it depends on how much RT you get. I'd rather take two 7 second shots with time to react in between than one 12 (I'm pulling this number straight out of my ass) second shot in which I'm screwed if something walks in.

It's cool that archers are getting something though.

Carl Spackler

Well, as a ranged ranger, I know i would love to be able to fire more than one shot at a time.

I would use it for shadow mastery right now.. then convert when it does become available.

If they have mastered gambits.. I can somewhat agree with you.

But I love mobility and camo. Nothing like an extra boost of +30 for a few arrows from hiding. Mass calm is sweet for big swarms too.

Of course my plan will change drastically should they nerf voln fu when monks and open hand combat is introduced but for the last few years this plan(or one very similar) has worked for me.

Ranger - archer
Wizard - polearm
Warrior - polearm
Bard - archer

To each their own. I have found that each one is extremely powerful in their own ways. On a side note, archery is just flat out better, that is all.

Alright, I have a question and I hope someone here can answer it. I know that training in spells over 1x per train gives a higher penalty for redux to the point where its near impossible to get it. My question is this, what happens if you train ahead in spells with the new mid-level training?

Artha
06-12-2004, 09:44 PM
It probably counts as being more than 1x.

I do not play anymore, so I am going to assume a few things. Yes, that makes both you and me an ass for even considering what I propose...

Gnomes should be set up for magic and crafts. Fill in the blanks. High at low levels for faster advancement, low at low levels for a really hard time.

I have a forest gnome archer and she's great. At level 25, she can take out tundra giants without too much of a problem. I started her out as OHE also, but switched her over to archery at about 8 trains or so, and haven't regretted it once. When I still had her using OHE, I was out trying to ambush one golem or the other, and got a message that the leg I was trying to ambush was out of reach. I know gnomes are tiny, but too tiny to even reach a leg? :?:

Skill-wise, I left her at level 9 in armor usage, as I don't plan to ever take her out of doubles.

Combat maneuvers 1X

Ranged weapons, 2X

Physical fitness 20 (this is where she plateaued at HP. I took PF up to 30, but HP stayed the same, so I migrated it back down. I'd been training her in this at 2X until it topped out.)

Dodging 1X

Magic item use 0.67X

Harness power 1X

Spell aiming 0.67X

Spirit mana control 1X

Survival 1X

Perception 1.5X

Climbing 0.3X

Swimming 0.3X

First aid 1X

Spells 1.15X

I did have her 1X'ed in stalking and hiding and ambushing once upon a time, but migrated those back down. She likes group hunting and it's much easier to group hunt if you're visible. I had thought that dropping ambush would mean fewer critical hits, but she gets just as many now as when she was trained in ambushing. I used the points to train in MIU and Spell aiming so that she can use ranger made rods with e-wave and other fun spells.

She's successful at skinning at least 75% of the time without using the skinning spell and only being 1X trained, though the spell is great for those times when she really wants a hide.

Hope this helps you out some. I think you're going to have a lot of fun with your new ranger.

I haven't been playing very long and she's my first and favorite character.
