I am strongly considering getting a tie restraining device, but I have no personal experience with them. This (http://www.tie-a-tie.net/accessories.html) website gave me a lot of food for thought and has a butterfly. I am currently leaning towards a tie chain, because chains are cool, but I am not sure whether this particular implementation will be so in practice.
Does anyone have a strong inclination towards a specific type or brand? Are there any I should stay away from?
Thanks. :)
The simpler the better. As in zero design on the front or etchings, initials DOLLAR SIGNS ect.
Go for silver, platinum or even steel, not gold.
You will be literally knee deep in (preferred gender) in no time.

I don't know where my wife found it, but a silver Tungsten is also a nice choice.

I know more about restraints...sheesh.
But yah, I like tie chains. Keep them simple, but it makes you look polished.
Esp if you wear bracers (suspenders), it frames your tie nicely.

I use a simple bar. Put on the tie, slide on the bar.
I don't mind chains simply because they let the tie move up and down more naturally ... I just don't like adjusting them or getting crap caught or tangled in them. Though that rarely happens.

Use a tie chain. Both tie bars and tie pins/tacks have a greater chance of damaging the silk of the tie since one pinches and the other punctures. Wear it about half way down your shirt (3rd or 4th button). Get 2. One in silver and one in gold so that if you can coordinate belt buckle, watch, tie chain, etc. and so you can wear the appropriate color metal for whatever colors in the suit/shirt/tie.
Fuck all of you ahead of time.

Don't do gold. You should go buy a new belt, and watch if you have gold ones.

Bracers and suspenders are two different things.
One you clip on to your waist band so you look like a mentally challenged, redneck, carpenter/shop teacher. The other are bracers (which button into the inside of your waistband).
Never wear suspenders unless you're also wearing a flower that shoots water.

I've never damaged a tie with a bar ... clips yes. Then again, I only wear a tie maybe twice a week at most at this point in my life. Up 4000% compared to 4 years ago.
Go with a vest and bracers ... as Anticor has pointed out, and likely continues to demonstrate, suspenders make you look like you need a padded helmet and a special needs handler ... perhaps even a sippie cup.

Then I must be going to the wrong place. Because I pay quite a bit of money for a professional to fit me and outfit me.
I don't own a single earth tone shirt in my collection. Not one. While in contrast to that every shirt I own is a soft hue or pastel when talking about shirts. Many of them have stripes. So either the local haberdashery I get my shirts and ties from is massively incorrect or there is something you and I are missing.
If you are that good, then I might have to stop paying the tailor for custom made shirts in these colors and fly out to where you are and we can go shopping.

You don't buy shirts at a haberdashery, just the collars BOOSH.
You never wear a brown or tan slack?
Why do you only own soft colors and stripes?!
It doesn't matter what you're paying don't let them think for you get some color in your gear. Sounds like your guy is just playing it safe and going off of neutral ground that you didn't say no to. I haven't had to put on a tie for anything but a funeral or wedding in a few years (which kind of sucks because I've got a shit ton of clothes just hanging out in the closet).
Also you are now the crb of this fashion post. Yeah, that just happened.

I would disagree to it being foolish. It's better than walking around looking like a hammered bag of ass. Some guys just don't get it or don't care to get it and would rather have someone assist them in putting their wardrobe together so they can move on to things they consider more important.

I shop here for all my dress up.
http://www.heimies.com/index.php
I never were brown or tan slacks. I always wear charcoal, a light grey, or black. Mostly the charcoal. I don't only just own softs and stripes. I have soft solids and a some herring bone etc. I said most of the colors I have are striped.
I plan on going down there this weekend, if it works out I will order up a new set of stuff and link pictures. And to SHM custom tailored shirts last me far longer then off the rack, but off the rack can be good if you take them to a third party tailor to get the fit right.
I work a nerdy database analyst position. But I like to look good, and paying someone to tailor and fit my clothes is not that horribly expensive for me. A custom fit shirt is like $80-$120 from the haberdashery. With proper care and laundering I have shirts that are 3 years old that look almost new.
You have to hand brush the collars and cuffs, and then I launder them on the gentle cycle. I cheat a little bit with them and toss them in the dryer for just a few minutes to heat them up before putting them on the hanger to air dry. This seems to reduce the overall number of hard wrinkles you have to iron out. Then I iron them and hang them on wood hangers.
Lately I have been lazy, so I take them to a laundry and pay them to launder the shirts, have to pay extra for the collar and cuff brushing tho.
Edit: Man its totally not a waste of money. A man deserves to treat himself, I would recommend it for your wedding, to a classic haircut and shave with the straight edge. I did it for the first time for my wedding, and I never looked back.

If you're putting more thought into dress clothes than "do I look retarded" or " do these clash" ... if your thought process includes the decorative value, pastels, earth tones ... or any other bullshit ... you're in the wrong damn section.
Either go to the doc and get your ED/Low T taken care of or just start shopping for skits. In a few years you'll be post op and probably happier anyway.

Buck is right on the dress shirts. You put the investment into them and take care of them and they last forever and they look good. Just don't be dumb with the collar choice so you don't look dated (button downs I'm looking at you).

The best part about building your shirts and pants, is you can pick the materials. I have some shirts that are much heavier material for the winter months than the summer months. I found with OTS(off the shelf) it was hard to find the right pattern/color/weight when I needed, and then I would have to get them tailored anyways.

I wear dress shirts 4 days of the week and a tie virtually never. I have dress shirts that are 10 years old and look good as new that are "off the shelf". I must not wear mine as often as you do and have a standard size or something. I do get my shirts and pants drycleaned and other than a stain I cannot remove or the occasional broken button from pressing, they all hold up pretty well.
I just don't need someone to tell me you don't wear this color with that color, nor do I need a tailor to fit them to me (pants I do get fitted but only because most of the ones I have came unhemmed).

well I only read the first half of this thread... and speaking for the rednecks and the mentally challenged. I find it disturbing that guys put so much thought into there outfits. I don't even have outfits. I got maybe 10 pair of paints, maybe 20 shirts, a few jackets, a pair of shoes. I put on the first clean shirt, the first pair of clean pants, the jacket that has my keys in it as long as its not lookin dirty. I'd say half of my shirts are collared 3 buttoned shirts. most of my cloths are brown/dark green with a few shades of blue thrown in. I don't own a tie, or a shirt you would wear a tie with. I don't think it ever crosses my mind what I look like so long as I'm comfortable.

On Drayal's advice I am designing "a lustrously / glowing silver / tie-chain", show desc "Suspended from the tie-chain by a series of smaller yet even more lustrous chains, you see an array of crossed Libras. Overcome, a single lustrous tear runs down your cheek as Rule Britannia echoes in your ears."
Also, "crossed libra" has some really counter-intuitive GIS results.

I didn't get any kind of tailored suit but I got a nice pair of black dress pants a nice black on black striped dress shirt a black silk tie with a silver tie chain. wore my grandfathers cross over the tie as well. I couldn't justify buying a pair of dress shoes but I got a pair of black shiny boots that looked well and fit both me and the outfit. also cause I felt nakid with otu a hat and a my normal ballcaps wouldn't work I found a real hat store and got a decent black fedora.
stoped at my buddys house after the funeral to see if they were home and when his wife opened the door the first thing I heard was oh my god you clean up well. ayways there been soemoen leaving me reps about trying to dress nicer and taking it slow and all... figured I'd post about it let em know. Thanks for bumping this. I have renewed respect for Buckwheat, knowing that he shops at Heimie's. A fine store, where you can also get a traditional straight-edged razor shave, which is what I intend to use my gift certificate for. Cool place in beautiful downtown St Paul.
Mustache Mike is pretty fucking awesome. You really owe it to yourself to get the $30 shave and the $30 haircut at least once. I round up and leave $75 for the two services combined.
I am not saying the haircut is superior to something from Fantastic Sam's but the experience is just amazing. I am a St. Paul kid through and through. I "venture" to Minneapolis for the high end eating experience, but there is nothing quite like getting a shave and a haircut and meeting someone at the Dining Car or in the warmer weather hitting up the food carts in Rice Park for a dog and just enjoying the park bench.
I prefer the "dives" in St. Paul area far more than Minneapolis.

I love Rice Park. Great plazas are something that St Paul has that Minneapolis doesn't. In fact the closest thing to one that they do have (Peavey Plaza) they're planning to demolish. As for St Paul restaurants, there are some good ones and some classic dives too. I'm a big fan of Red's Savoy Pizza, and also Babani's Kurdish Restaurant.
Resident of St Paul for the last 10+ years. Love St Paul.

Bracers and suspenders are two different things.
One you clip on to your waist band so you look like a mentally challenged, redneck, carpenter/shop teacher. The other are bracers (which button into the inside of your waistband).
Never wear suspenders unless you're also wearing a flower that shoots water.
Too true.
Yes, all my suits have buttons and silk bracers, I like the look, and a simple tie chain works.
I keep my suits to black, blue, grey, a few pinstripes in those colors. Variety of shirts and ties from classic white, to a blazing blue and wine, but I like to look classic when dressed up.
With my business though, I mostly decked in a games2u hoodie, g2u baseball cap, and shorts. Go figure! :)
I've always gone with the simple silver clip about a third down from the neck. Simple and creates a nice aesthetic without being too pretentious.

I'm lucky.
I go to an old school barber who doesn't even have a phone in his shop to take appointments. Go in, sit and wait.
Clippers, and a straight edge razor for shaving and the back of your neck.
I'd love to find a high end one, but I can't complain about a shave and a haircut for 20 bucks either just down the road.

Freaking gloat, why don't you? Everything here is nail salons, professional buildings and unisex hair places where the dressers aren't even that good. There is only one barber in my entire town. I broke his hat rack when I first moved here.
I don't know what the hell I'm saying and I need to operate a motor vehicle really soon. Y'all take care.
