I have been working on a text engine for the past couple of years on and off. I have it right now at a point where I want to start building some content like rooms/monsters/etc. I am hoping to find someone that is interested in putting in some effort to create the main city and a few starting zones ( rats and the like ) so that I can get some people in the game to test the combat and magic systems.

I am also looking for people with some unique ideas about spells for the different classes. I have selected the following guilds, each having 20 unique skills. Priest, Paladin, Ranger, Rogue, Warrior, Wizard. Everyone uses energy to use spells/skills for their guild. Common ideas apply where a Wizard would have something like Fireball or Frostbolt and Warrior would have something like Charge or Bash.

The game is modeled a lot like Gemstone ( as far as showing numbers during combat ) since that is one of my favorite MUDs in production today. I've also decided to take some notes from games like World of Warcraft and Everquest as far as physical damage reduction via armor and spell damage reduction through resistances.

The game has a custom ( all be it very bland looking right now ) Silverlight client to allow people to play it without having to download some generic MUD client and have a more custom experience.

Let me know if you are interested by sending a PM.

Don't see why they couldn't exist. I would need 20 skills, but there is nothing really making them impossible.

Taken me some time to get back to the project after moving back to California from Washington. I've put up the client that I had running at http://72.194.111.39:8080/GameClient.Web/ if anyone wants to pop on and create a character. I am building a starter city with a custom map to get an idea for how I want to go about making the game a bit more visual.

Updated the URL to just http://72.194.111.39:8080 and also added some sewer rats to the rooms that are there right now so people can see combat and experience gains a little.

He used a slang word for "penis" in his name. Very clever. And bonus points for the age of 69. Do you have a forum or a list of updates/changes that gets updated from time to time? I'd like to keep up on how this is going.

Not really, though I suppose I could start writing them up. Right now I am just spending some free time working on the client and building out the core systems. Content should come along quite organically as I find time to implement new ideas.

I will be opening up the different guilds inside town so people will have a place to go use the TRAIN and ADVANCE commands to level up.

Added each guild to the city with 1 room each. I would love to have some players come up with the design of each guild ( around 5 or so rooms each ) and name the guild master and guild trainer ( npcs ).

Would you rather play a game where self assigned stats are what define you or self assigned stats and gear that you randomly find define you?

Gear always makes things interesting.

I also love randomness. One reason why I'm mad the GS chargen changed. I used to love letting the autoroller run for hours and hours to try and get that awesome roll.

I think so. The only thing I would miss with a gear-centric game would be alternations on items. Perhaps if there was just a way to carry an alteration from item to item.

hours or weeks .. whatever comes first. Rolling = pain in the ass.. rolling that one perfect roll that made you so much better than everyone else = priceless...giving up 3 days into the process cause you just want to f'n play already = gemstone

You didn't HAVE to get great stats... it was just fun min/maxing.

You should totally name this game Dickhammer.

Better off just hitting yourself in the head with a hammer repeatedly. Some friends put together a game. http://www.islesofaedin.com/ Read the second post to get an idea of how it went.

This is indeed still going. The disappointment of Diablo 3 has made me even more interested in getting something out there that doesn't suck ball sack.

Have you ever thought setting up a D&D game within the world? As the DM you could build the rooms you would need for the storyline, the monsters, etc. I think the MUD format would work great for that type of gameplay as so long as those participating knew the limits of the world and didn't try to stray too much from the storyline.

I think an idea that interests me more is generating lore as the game progresses. A lot of games these days already have gods and heroes from days gone by, and the players just seem to be existing in a boring part of history. I would like to create something that allows a writer ( historian type ) the ability to create a story structure and introduce the players to it. As the story progresses, those involved become part of the history and it can be put into the game's lore. I really like the idea of having a writer participate and work alongside a developer to create a truly unique and unplanned event.

Server should be online. I know there isn't much to the city right now ( I am not very good at room building ) but the systems are coming online to allow content to be made quickly. I have a few changes I want to make to how spells and skills work so I can easily modify them without having people need to re-roll or anything during any sort of testing phase. I will also be adding a treasure system soon and probably creatures for levels 1 - 10 ( right now only rats exist within the city walls ).

I am working on a list of preliminary skills for each of the classes. I am having a rough time with Monks. If anyone has any suggestions, it would be great to hear from you. The Monk is going to be a hybrid rogue/wizard.

Hmmm. Should be working. If the game is offline it should say something like 'An attempt was made to access the socket ...'

I'll put some better messaging in there to let you know the game is offline vs crashed and broken.

I have finished adding all the rooms in the city, and am now working on adding all the guilds. Warrior's guild area/single room is generated with a trainer so if you roll a warrior you should be able to use the TRAIN command.

I am looking for some suggestions on guild specific skills that I can give each guild to make them unique. I am probably going to give Wizards enchanting and teleporting, Rogues will have picking/disarming and poisons, Priests will have raise dead and sanctuary?? I'd love some suggestions for Monk, Paladin and Warrior. I liked the 'beseech' skill for Paladins in GS so maybe they can have that?

I am going to postpone this project for awhile and investigate build a custom server on top of the UO client ( similar to RunUO but with more custom rules and whatnot ).

Could be interesting to use it as a 'graphical' version of Gemstone.

Unfortunately it doesn't look like UO is going to offer enough customization to create something close to Gemstone, or really that far away from UO. Bum deal.
