View Full Version : Familiar gate and runes

Got a couple of questions that I can't seem to find answered anywhere. I've searched krakiipedia, these forums, google, etc.

1.) Familiar gate. I keep hearing that this spell is dangerous if you cast it right when you get it. Does that mean success is based on spell ranks or based on your level? I'm level 42, and will have it by 44, am I safe to cast it when I get it since I'll be +14 over the spell level, or do I need more wizard circle training?

2.) Runes. I don't understand this system at all. Had a wizard earlier tell me about rune teaching, but since I didn't have call familiar, I couldn't learn what he wanted to teach me. I like my wyrdling familiar, so is there a way to save that in a runestone? Do I need to learn it some other way? I can see the rune drawing process, but I'm clueless from that point on.

Thanks for your help!

Familiar Gate does have a chance to fail and damage the caster. The factors contributing to the rate of failure are the caster's training in Elemental Mana Control (http://www.krakiipedia.org/wiki/Elemental_Mana_Control), Discipline (http://www.krakiipedia.org/wiki/Discipline), Aura (http://www.krakiipedia.org/wiki/Aura), and training in the Wizard Base (http://www.krakiipedia.org/wiki/Wizard_Base) spell circle.

Wizards will find that knowledge of the Familiar Gate spell is accompanied by knowledge of the gate rune (http://www.krakiipedia.org/wiki/Gate_rune_%28verb%29). This rune may be drawn upon a prepared runestone (http://www.krakiipedia.org/wiki/Runestone). The runestone will now provide a bonus to success equal to 10% plus 1 percentage point per 10 skill bonus of the caster's Magic Item Use skill when held in hand while casting the Familiar Gate spell. Each use will consume one charge of the runestone's power, and typical runestones will be created with one charge.

-from Krakiipedia.

Generally at level 30, you'll usually fail 930 quite a bit. It seems to get better around level 60 or so, although I still occasionally have failed at level 100.

As far as runestones, http://www.krakiipedia.org/wiki/Runestone, should have all of the information you need to create one. Once you draw the familiar rune on it you wave it at your familiar of choice, and in the future just cast 920 at the talisman, as explained here IG:
>rune
Usage: RUNE {option}

Where {option} is one of the following:
COMMON - Lists common runes known to you.
UNCOMMON - Lists uncommon runes known to you.
TEACH {player} {rune} - Attempt to teach a rune to someone else.
FORGET {rune} - Focus on forgetting a rune.

NOTE: Forgetting a rune requires a specialized forget runestone.

How to make a runestone: Runestone creation is a fairly simple procedure, and can be done in one of two ways. A caster may purchase runestones that are already prepared for scribing from an alchemist shop or wandering merchant, or they may prepare an item (like a smooth stone) for scribing themselves by pouring an aish'vrak potion on it. Once they have a prepared item, they'll need to have a brush and ink, and DIP MY BRUSH IN MY INK. Then DRAW {rune} RUNE [ON {runestone}] [WITH {runebrush}] while holding the prepared item and the brush.

The official spell description for 920 also explains how to do this...

Note: Binding is the uncommon rune required to do this. If you don't know it, I can teach you it.

So, I did read through the krakiipedia page, but that's exactly my question. It says wizard base spell circle, but you reference your level. Would I be able to cast it at level 45ish with only 30 ranks in wizard, or is having only up to 930 a bad idea if I want to gate?

The binding rune thing I didn't know. Reading it back over, I see how it's done now. Is this an uncommon rune? I frequent the icemule area, would be great if you could teach it to me.

Thanks!

Because by a higher level, you generally have more EMC ranks and wizard spell ranks.

And yes, it is an uncommon rune. If you can FWI I can teach you right now, if not well.. I'm no where near Mule... Heh.

Sounds a bit like the wizard who wanted to teach you a rune was trying to teach you the Gate (helps with Familiar Gate) rune, not the Binding (helps getting your favorite familiar) rune. Check RUNE to see if you have the binding one. As you get older the binding rune works better and better.

Well I know absolutly nothing about runes so I guess I'll be reading Krakii later.

As for gate at level 40 with 38 ranks of wiz, fully singled in EMC and DIS and AUR in the 90's, I fail a cast of a gate about 1/3 the time.

I'd guess about 1/3 of those faliures are major ones... long stuns/major damage.

I've yet to die when casting 930, but I'm suprised I've lived through some of the crits I've gotten.

I had another wizard teach me the binding rune last night and I got my wyrdling familiar talisman all created and such.

Good to know about the gate. I'll see what my failure rate is at 44 with 30 ranks in wizard. It'll probably be pretty catastrophic, but now I just have to decide if I want to bump up wizard ranks a little to help out my gate, or catch up on minor elemental. I was hoping just level alone would compensate and I could chill wizard ranks at 30. My aura bonus is really low, but my disc bonus is high and I'm fully singled in EMC.

Thanks for the help, everyone!

Good stuff here. Made my first familiar gate rune last week.

Are any wizards willing to teach me the binding rune?

I'm normally in the Landing and I don't have access to FWI. I could travel a bit if necessary.

Thank you.

Remind me today and I'll teach it to ya. No 12 hours at work today.
