I thought this was interesting, and was hoping someone like Gib could comment
You give your vaalin hatpin a sharp twist, attempting to straighten it slightly, before settling into the difficult task of picking the lock on a battered iron strongbox...
You make an excellent attempt (d100=91).
You are not able to pick the lock, and learn little about it.
Roundtime: 18 sec.

You gesture and invoke the powers of the elements for the Lock Pick Enhancement spell...
Your spell is ready.
You gesture.
A scintillating light surrounds your hands.
Cast Roundtime 3 Seconds.

You give your vaalin hatpin a sharp twist, attempting to straighten it slightly, before settling into the difficult task of picking the lock on a battered iron strongbox...
You make a miserable attempt (d100=15).
You struggle with the strongbox. As you do, you get a sense that the strongbox has a somewhat difficult lock (-545 thief-lingo difficulty ranking). Then...CLICK! It opens!
[You have completed your training task.]
Roundtime: 18 sec.
Liskey is only trained to 404. How many ranks or how much bonus does one get from 403?

It is based on a few factors. Download ;maxlock and it will tell you how much your selfcast 403 gives you.

Sorry to hijack your thread here but I have a somewhat related question of my own.
I have had lockpick attems where I rolled a number, for example 60, got a reading on the lock and was not able to successfully open the lock on that attempt. Then I roll another number even lower say 59 and it opens. Anyone know why this happens? I have seen it happen a few times.

I forget the exact lingo to use, but when you see the lock, you need lower rolls than before to open it.

1040 1383 vaalin - 430/3x pick rogue
45 313 vaalin - 475 no pick wizard.
Interesting that it boosts so much.

Well, technically you couldn't use vaalin to it's full effect with the wizard, as you don't have enough picking skill.

I believe each attempt in which you see the difficulty of the lock gives you a small bonus to your roll on subsequent attempts. Also pretty sure it stacks, but I dunno if there is a cap.

Unless it's changed, if you actually see the lock, the roll requirement drops by 10.
If you get that other message (I forgot what it says, but something like 'But you get the feeling you're 1337 enough to get it if you try hard enough'), it drops by 5.

maxlock is wrong. lockpicks = more accurate. They both use basically the same formula, but maxlock is "modified." Don't ask. (Also, don't ask me to fix them cause I didn't upload them, although I wrote them both.)

It's called modding down the lock. (Or trap.)

There is only modding down on locks for SEEING the lock and not clicking it, not for the pick messaging alone. (As far as I know, the above was never true.) You basically get +5 to your roll. Same works for traps if you get whatever the message is, which is probably what Methais was thinking.
As for self cast lore...
pick name: copper, unlored: 425, lored: 562
pick name: brass, unlored: 425, lored: 562
pick name: steel, unlored: 467, lored: 618

pick name: gold, unlored: 510, lored: 674
pick name: silver, unlored: 552, lored: 730
pick name: mithril, unlored: 616, lored: 815
pick name: ora, unlored: 658, lored: 871

pick name: vaalin, unlored: 1062, lored: 1405
Max unlored trap: 425 and max lored trap is 532
... Yes, it is that uber.
Had the locks/traps review Ildran had slated been approved, natural picking ability would've gotten a boost, while lore would have seen a downtweak. (Higher unlored lock, about the same lored lock.)
We all happy now? :welcome:

You're talking about modding down. Yeah, it stacks. To the best of my knowledge there's no hard-coded cap.

Yes. That is some pretty sick lore you have.
