View Full Version : Lockouts.

As I have very little experience with lockouts, I'll voice a few things I've wondered about.

How 'difficult' is it really to get locked out?

Are lockouts a fairly common way of dealing with generally disruptive people, or is it something that the GameMasters reserve for the truly wicked?

I've played off and on for a while, and I've never been threatened with a lockout (At least not one that didn't come from some loudmouth kid type) and I've never known any of my friends or acquaintances to have been locked out.

My other thought would be, is lockout really something that's effective? I could see how it would be, but I would also think that these people might take other things more seriously: something like losing experience points. Having an experience absorption modifier, that slows you down. It seems like most of the troublemakers I know are all of the 'hunt, gain levels, beat people up' breed. Not that I'd ever want such a thing to be implemented... I'd imagine the lack of severity to such a penalty would mean they would be handed out more. That would suck.

Lockouts are less than rare. I got Atherin in trouble, possibly locked out, a few minutes ago and received an experience multiplier for the tip.

Really, it depends on who you are and what you did.

Some people get locked out for playing jokes on their friends.

Others get away with killing dozens in an invasion with meteor swarm.

To actually get locked out for doing a single or very few things is pretty rare from what I have seen. You have to break some major policy and mechanics bug abuse.

What 99% of the people claim here on the boards is:

"I only did XXXX and I got locked out!!!"

Sometimes that is partially true and most of the time it's complete manure. Two things are usually going on here:

1. They are flat out lying about the facts.

2. They are a constant source of trouble in the past...soapings, verbal warnings, in and out of trouble for PvP and general nuisance crap. Then when they finally do something worth being locked out they expect no one to remember how much of an asshole they have been in the past.

So yeah it really is hard to get locked out. I think my main character has had 4 or 5 warnings...I have never even been close to locked out even though you can get locked out for just 1 or 2. The difference is I don't act like a dick to the GMs when I do get my hands slapped, I learned back when I got my warnings what was a no-no, and I learned how to cover my ass. I make sure I am totally justified when I kill someone. I don't abuse bugs or harass people just to cause trouble. I don't go around spouting modern phrases and curse words.

You still don't get that GS4's a lot worse for people who swing blades. I'm sorry you wasted some great characters.

GemStone IV, Stormhammer, and any other stupid name is goes under is a perfect game for warriors. I don't know what it is you're thinking, but it must be something stupid. Have you looked at ANY changes?

Well lockouts do depend on who you are and what drugs/alcohol the GMs are taking/on that day. Could be PMS, could be coming back from the bar pissed off, could be on pain meds or just in a bad mood or they could just be making a mistake. That's one of the biggest problems I had with their system. Also your lockout will be held against you even if you are good for the next 10 years. Braudan told me my second lockout was a mistake and he was sorry at Simucon. But did I still have to serve the 60 days for his mistake? Yes. But my first lockout was well deserved. I am the first to admit I f'ed up. But Crackstone employees refuse to admit mistakes because of their god complexes. I am a GOD! I can do not wrong! GOT THAT!?!? I am not a used car saleman! I AM GOD OF EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE IN CRACKSTONE!!! FEAR ME! My impression of Celtic/Mahegh.

Dude step away from the Meth and put down the pipe. You cause trouble and you get what you have coming to you...it's pretty simple I think.

The classic Edge argument tactic returns. I kind've liked the passive aggressive crap rather than the "call everyone who opposes you gay" thing.

Some things are NEVER going to change... Dorkleaf's habits being one of them.

I know He's never REALLY going to leave GS, or these boards... it's the sort of love/hate relationship obsessive/compulsives get stuck in their whole lives. :tumble:

Edgeleaf will leave gemstone related things for good about the same time I start losing my hair.

you can call me anything you want Edge... I won't complaign or whine about it... that sort of thing doesnt bother me at all :)

I've always felt if done PROPERLY, making fun of someone can be fun and entertaining,... when done poorly it's just a sad cry for help and indicative of poor social development and conversational skills (not to mention inability to argue a point)).

Just don't call me late for dinner and we get along fine.

So which is it.. do they admit to mistakes or not? If claim they don't, don't start your paragraph with a GM claiming to have made one.

It's hard to get locked out, unless you're an idiot. If you're an idiot, it's not that hard. Don't kill random people, and abide by policy, and you'll be fine.

Well, you should post that you are kidding, even so, shouldn't kid like that. If anything Native Americans deserve more respect then any other race. You hear all the time African-Americans whine about this and that, yeah, well try having all of that happen to you and all of your land taken away. They don't go on still about stuff that happened to them way in the past. Oh well, back to stuff.

Bobmuhthol

I think most situations have various factors that determine how easy or hard it is to get locked out. Specifically unwarranted PVP or harassment.

Mandatory lockouts garnish some offenses, though. I'm sure there's one for bug abuse, and I know from personal experience that a second scripting offense recieved a mandatory 30 day lockout.

Betheny
08-14-2003, 05:30 AM
It makes sense to me, that if one does not want to get 'in trouble', one would not participate in behavior that's troublesome.

I guess that's why I have absolutely zero sympathy for people that come here and complain about how they were unfairly treated by a GM, or things of that nature. While I'm sure there are some injustices dished out by our 'police', I tend to believe (through personal experience) that people can already get away with way too much crap in game. I find it hard to believe that someone can get locked out without any sort of concrete proof, or prior evidence of engaging in the lockout-worthy offense.

Khaladon got angry at me one day... I put out some kind of a thought, being funny, looking to set my gay friend up with a date.

Apparently -- being homosexual in Gemstone is not PG rated, and must be censored.

Totally agree Maimara. I've never recieved a warning, a lockout anything, and I've killed, stolen etc. If you treat the people who run this game with respect, I generally find they are more than happy to take the time to listen and consider your side of events.
