Just a smattering of questions from the ten-page test I took mentioned in another thread.

When I started this job, I knew it would be a huge challenge based partly on the fact that I'd never done any gambling besides Blackjack and Slots. Also, I'd never worked in a casino environment - no chance of picking up on things as I went along.

I'll post the answers after some people have posted their own, I'm just curious how much the "average" person knows.

Blackjack:

1. Name as many ways as you can think of to cheat at blackjack.

2. Name the positions on a blackjack table.

3. Name the count system used by most teams today and the values of the cards.

3. Why must the dealer hold the cards at a 45-degree angle? (single and double deck)

4. What is wonging (back-counting)?

5. Why is there a casino logo on the top of every card in the deck?

6. Name as many types of legal advantage play as you can think of.

Baccarat:

1. What numbers are a natural?

2. What does a tie pay?

3. How many decks in a baccarat shoe?

4. Does the dealer draw/not draw a third card based on the combined value of the player's cards or on the third player's card alone?

5. Name as many ways as you can think of to cheat at baccarat.

Roulette:

1. What bets on the roulette layout are favored by past posters and why?

2. Name the bets on the roulette layout and what they pay.

3. What is the only bet on the layout that pays 6:1 called and what numbers does it cover?

4. Where is the courtesy line located, what numbers does it cover and why is it called the courtesy line?

5. What is the easiest way to stop someone from clocking the wheel?

6. What is chip-changing?

Pai Gow Poker:

1. What is the RNG, and what is its function?

2. How many cards are dealt to each player?

3. How many cards in the high hand? In the low hand?

4. Set the following hands (no suits):
- 4,2,A,2,A,J,5
- 4,7,9,Q,J,8,6

Dice:

1. The point has already been established and a player makes a Don't Pass bet. Is this allowed, and what is it called?

2. How many ways can you roll a 7?

3. How many combinations can be rolled with a pair of dice?

4. A player makes a come bet and the shooter rolls a 7. Is this a losing bet?

5. What is a rail bird?

6. What are the house positions on a dice table?

7. For what reasons might a no-roll be called on a dice game (at least five).

8. Who is the highest level of management on a dice table?

9. What are gaffed dice?

Carnival Games:

1. What are the bets called on Three Card Poker?

2. How many bets must a player make on Let It Ride?

3. Which of the dealer's three cards on Let It Ride is burned, and why?

4. What is a player's minimum qualifying hand to be paid on Let It Ride?

Blackjack:

1. Name as many ways as you can think of to cheat at blackjack.

-- Past Posting, counting, marking cards, swapping cards from two different hands. Also, someone using a spotter for the dealer's hole card, and then signaling.

2. Name the positions on a blackjack table.

--Dealer, corner (the last guy before the dealer draws), and I have no clue about the other schmoes.

3. Name the count system used by most teams today and the values of the cards.

--I don't know the name of it... Ace, King, Queen, Jack, and ten get a -1,... two, three, four, five and six get a +1,... seven, eight, and nine are neutral.

3. Why must the dealer hold the cards at a 45-degree angle? (single and double deck)

--I've never played single or double deck, but I imagine it has to do with a spotter and a signal person reading the cards. Add that to my list of potential cheats too, Sensei.

4. What is wonging (back-counting)?

--This I've never heard of... I'm assuming that it means changing the order of how you count the cards to avoid suspition? I think I just butchered the spelling of that... either way, I've never heard of it.

5. Why is there a casino logo on the top of every card in the deck?

--So you know that the cards didn't come from somewhere else... ie. someone bringing their own cards. You can know that everything is in order when the decks are "washed".

6. Name as many types of legal advantage play as you can think of.

--Card chart for selecting when to hit or stay. If you are seen using one of these, you will suffer bad karma, plus everyone will think you are a pussy.

Changing your bet.

Playing multiple hands against a dealer (it's bad to go head to head with only one hand against a dealer.

Dice:

1. The point has already been established and a player makes a Don't Pass bet. Is this allowed, and what is it called?

I should know this, but I don't. I know that

2. How many ways can you roll a 7?
--1-6, 2-5, 3-4. So, three ways. Also known as "Big Red".
The odds of a seven coming are 1/6 for any given roll.

3. How many combinations can be rolled with a pair of dice?

--There are 36 combination with a pair of dice resulting in an outcome of 2-12

4. A player makes a come bet and the shooter rolls a 7. Is this a losing bet?

No. The come bet wins. It's quite bittersweet though.

5. What is a rail bird?

--Never heard this term. I'm assing someone who is leaning over the railing and doing something they are not supposed to.

6. What are the house positions on a dice table?

--There are two dealers, one working each end of the table. There is the box man in the center, and then there is a stickman.

7. For what reasons might a no-roll be called on a dice game (at least five).

1. Die flys off the table. Usually, this is a person who is used to playing on the street corner. See Chappelle Show's "World Championship of Dice".

2. Small old lady with oxygen doesn't get them off the back wall.

There are five??

Maybe the stick man screws up and hands them out early... this I'm curious about.

8. Who is the highest level of management on a dice table?

Box man.

9. What are gaffed dice?

Gaffed dice are uneven dice. Like, for instance, if you put lead in the "1" pin, the "6" would come up more frequently.

Misc. Casino:

1. What is the number-one method of theft perpetuated by bartenders and cocktail waitresses?

-- They give out drinks to people not gambling in exchange for tips.

2. What is a mini-light? How does it work?

--This is a little thing that you shove up the inside of the coin release slot to fool the optical sensor into thinking that coins have not fallen out yet, so the coins keep on coming.

3. What is the number one sign of slot cheats?

--Paranoid like nobody's business.

4. Explain the differences between the Nevada List of Excluded Persons (black book) and the Barred Patrons book.

--Nevada list is for all of Nevada. The Patrons book is only for an individual casino (or casino conglomerate).

5. What is a sign of a sports book writer that is writing his own tickets?

-- He's very fat. Sorry, that's everyone in the sports book. This I don't know... I'm curious though.

6. What are the reasons Surveillance is mandated by Gaming Control? (list three)

1. Ensures quality product

2. Customer safety.

Actually, you can have a pen and pencil at a table (so long as it's made of wood and the paper is no bigger then 3x5), however, trying to count cards is a no/no to the enth degree. Keeping notes on how other players play is ok, or how many times you tipped the waitress. ;-)

Longshot did really well, especially on some of the more obscure questions (like the one about selling drinks for tokes). I'm impressed.

On card-counting, it's not illegal, but we will kick you out for it. There's no law about it, but there's also this neat thing about the casino being private property. We can kick out everyone wearing green hats if we decide we don't like them. No roughness or intimidation is necessary, just a nice, "we're not going to accept your play any more here" is all it takes. Color up and get the fuck out. Sometimes if the CSM is feeling nice he'll say "you're welcome to play any other game here," and if you're a dick about getting backed off they'll just trespass you from the property completely. Then if you come back again, metro can be called.

I'll post answers when I get home from work tonight.

Kranar, you are correct once more. Darn you. :-)

=====================================
"Is blackjack card counting illegal"?

As long as a card counter is only using his brains to decide how to play his hand, then the act of card counting is not illegal.

"How do casinos get away with excluding card counters from playing blackjack"? "Isn't this discrimination"?

The Nevada courts have allowed casinos to exclude card counters because technically they are private property, and under the ancient common law right a property owner could kick off his property anyone for any reason, or even without a reason. Many players and lawyers believe that barring skillful players from playing blackjack is an unconstitutional form of discrimination. However, the Supreme Court prohibits discrimination only against persons who are members of "suspect classifications" based on race, creed, sex, national origin, age, or physical disability (i.e., card counters are not listed in the "suspect classifications"). Therefore, until a law is passed or blackjack players bring a challenge, casinos will continue the practice of barring card counters.

In Atlantic City casinos, the late Ken Uston (blackjack author and professional card counter), won the right in the N.J. courts for card counters to count cards there. Essentially the N.J. Supreme Court told the AC casinos that they could not bar card counters unless the N.J. Casino Control Commission issued a rule saying counters could be barred. So far they have not made this ruling, however, they have allowed the casinos to make the game of blackjack much harder for counters to beat.

"Can the casinos legally 'backroom" a card counter"?

"Backrooming" is a word that has come to denote the practice of detaining or harassing a player who is barred. Usually the casino will ask to see some form of identification and take the player's picture. Under common law and the laws of most states, it is illegal for a business establishment to detain a person, unless the customer has committed a crime and the business is holding the person while awaiting the arrival of police. Therefore, when a casino security agent asks if a player will accompany him to the office, the player has the right to refuse, unless he is being held for a crime. In Nevada, a casino has the right to question and detain any person suspected of cheating. New Jersey, however, made the point that card counting is not a crime and therefore it is not permissible for a casino to detain and question a person suspected of being a card counter. The casino also does not have the right to demand identification because it is ejecting someone for card counting. A player should not have to provide his name upon request of the casino, but it could conceivably be considered obstruction of justice to refuse to provide one's name upon the request of the police. A player also cannot be forced to pose for a photograph.

If the casino is barring you:

Don't admit that you are a card counter.
Don't wait long enough for your picture to taken.
Don't start an argument or make a loud fuss.
Don't go to a bar and have a drink.
Don't show your identification
Don't touch any casino employee.
"Can a casino have a card counter arrested for trespassing if he returns and plays blackjack in a casino in which he was previously barred from playing"?

Most states have trespassing statutes that makes it a misdemeanor for a person to remain on or return to a property after receiving notice from the owner that the person is not allowed on the premises. Most casinos in barring a card counting will tell them "not to return," however it is not usually followed by arrest and prosecution if they do return.

One final tip based on my playing experiences. The best way to avoid getting barred is to play for short periods of time (no more than one hour), increase your bets incrementally by parlaying your wins, and give the appearance that you are just another gambler out for a good time. Your best source for learning how to get away with getting the money is the book Burning the Tables in Las Vegas by Ian Andersen. Its must reading for all "wannabe" card counters.

I'll only attempt the blackjack section. When I went to Vegas a few months ago I watched all my friends lose an incredible amount of money at the $5 blackjack tables. I just watched. I know many of the strategies, I but don't gamble enough to care to implement them... thus, I'm not stupid enough to play the game. Card magic is a hobby of mine. I'm currently working on polishing my Svengali routine and manipulating my stripped deck.

Blackjack:

1. Name as many ways as you can think of to cheat at blackjack.

-stealing the dealer's tip pile when he isn't looking (I've actually done this); stealing neighboring player's chips, grabbing chips and making for the door; figuring out the hole card; adding or subtracting chips to/from your bet depending on the outcome; marking the 10s; sleight-of-hand card manipluation (by the bad-asses) including holding cards, trading with a partner, or playing several hands and trading with yourself; buying insurance at the right times if you're counting cards; picking the right time to enter/leave the game; eh... I'm running out

2. Name the positions on a blackjack table.

No clue.

3. Name the count system used by most teams today and the values of the cards.

Are you asking for KO, Red Seven, Hi/Lo, Hi-Opt I/II, Zen, etc? But these aren't team counting strategies, so I think I'm probably wrong here.

3. Why must the dealer hold the cards at a 45-degree angle? (single and double deck)

So people can't see the cards? I dunno.

4. What is wonging (back-counting)?

Negative.

5. Why is there a casino logo on the top of every card in the deck?

So you can't substitute your own cards. It makes holding cards much more difficult.

6. Name as many types of legal advantage play as you can think of.

Choosing when to enter/leave the game, counting cards, using a cheat sheet, doubling down, buying insurance if you're counting, shuffle tracking, team play....

Go Fish!

I remember my father teaching me blackjack. He said... the dealer has to hit 16 can't hit 17. I can play blackjack and poker. However, I have no idea on the questions. I'm a total amateur. When I gamble, I take a set amount of money and if I lose it, I quit. I lost my grocery money too many times in college by not doing that.

Also, I'm wondering if my father's name is in that big banned book...

If you aren't *fantastic* at blackjack, you'll definitely lose it. =) But if you're really good, you can make a decent hourly wage. (Decent means about what you'd make waiting tables..., but hey, it's free money!)

"A player also cannot be forced to pose for a photograph.

If the casino is barring you:

Don't wait long enough for your picture to taken."

Heh. While good advice, it's really doesn't matter. If we're at the point of having the CSM back you off, we've already taken half a dozen each of straight-on ID shots and profile shots of you with the video capture card connected to our pit cameras.

These shots are compared to the hundreds of pictures in our known cheat/advantage player database (most casinos subscribe to it, it's called CVI) and compared your picture to those. If we get a match, we likely have your real name, DOB, in some cases your soc, and in MANY cases a dozen or so AKAs you like to use.

While you don't have to pose for a picture, we also don't really need you to:)

This is true at most places. However, be sure to look at the felt on the table you're playing at - some of them say Dealer Hits Soft 16 and Stands on ALL 17s. Mandalay Bay has a few tables like this, and so does Slots A Fun (my favorite dive casino).

I won't play at those tables.

Yeah, I owe a lot to my director for taking a chance on me with zero casino experience. I feel like I owe him at least two years of work before I move on to a bigger property. I DID work for security at a gated community in college, but that's hardly the same as a casino environment. And my BS is in sociology, which means precisely dick here.

-Hand mucking (switching)
-Cold decking (requires dealer/agent collusion
-All other forms of collusion
-Pinching/capping bets
-Picking up the hole card with a device (prism or reflective device)
-Counting with anything mechanical (illegal if you don't use your own head to keep count).

2. Name the positions on a blackjack table. - First base, centerfield, third base.

3. Name the count system used by most teams today and the values of the cards.
-Hi/Lo count is used by most of the teams in existence - MIT, Greeks, and Hyland. Values are 2-6 = +1, 7,8,9 = neutral and 10, F, A = -1.

3. Why must the dealer hold the cards at a 45-degree angle? (single and double deck) - Because holding the cards in this fashion makes it almost impossible for players to see marks on cards that have been daubed or edged.

4. What is wonging (back-counting)?
-Standing aside from a game, not playing, until the count is in your favor.

5. Why is there a casino logo on the top of every card in the deck?
-Can't switch cards, also, surveillance seeing the logo move when cards are dealt makes it difficult for a dealer to deal seconds.

6. Name as many types of legal advantage play as you can think of.
-Counting
-Shuffle and Ace tracking
-Playing to the aces (not counting all cards, just increasing your bet when the deck/shoe is ace-rich).

-8 and 9

2. What does a tie pay?
-8 to 1

3. How many decks in a baccarat shoe?

-Third card alone.

5. Name as many ways as you can think of to cheat at baccarat.

-Straight up = 35:1
-Outside bets = Even money

I should have known that a don't pass after the come out roll is a past post bet!

I have never bet the Don't Pass... it's just a shit thing to do.

I paid about half of my college tuition with my "job" at the casino.

I'm lethal on a crap table.

I live in Vegas and have very little casino knowledge. It's a shame. -_- I just play video poker though.

Craps and Pai Gow Tiles have been my two biggest challenges as far as learning the game goes.

Still working on tiles, as a matter of fact. They suck. They're not at all like dominoes, which is what I originally thought.

I'm sure you can deal craps better than "Pocohantas" did at the casino I went to...

I hate playing Blackjack when 'first base' is clueless. I also hate playing 'first base'. So go figure. 'first base' can ruin it for everyone on the table. Learned the hard way, I did. :(

As for counting cards. It's pretty easy. Lots of programs that teach you how to count ANY size deck. You just got to concentrate, don't order a bunch of free drinks....

Where I use to gamble at they would rotate the dealers every so often. So you would get a feel for who was hot. There are lots of ways to try and manipulate it to your advantage.

I like the corner seat.

I'd much rather bite the bullet on a 16, than watch some old fucker on oxygen blow it for the whole table.

I hate when there is a Soccer Mom killing the table...Uuugh! I got a 18, I will hit! Your only showing a 7!..lol. I watch the table to see who starts it off before I sit down anymore. Also, we get into a group to try and take on dealers. Where I live now they do not rotate. So if you take 3+ players and split the profits or losses, you can usually come out ahead of the house. Best night I seen was my roommate. I was in the sports bar seeing a waitress. He was going at it solo and when he came to drag me off. He was walking out with 10 grand.

My father use to work with a crew that would hit casinos all over the US that the progressive slots would hit a certain dollar amount. Ever hear about those people? He would do very well, he never got banned from a Casino doing that... I never seen him hit a jackpot, but heard the stories.
