Cortez is a shit ref. Floyd is smart. Ortiz is in the corner, Cortez says "let's go" and signals the two fighters toward the center of the ring. The correct command for resuming action is "box". Ortiz looks at Floyd for a hug, Floyd raises his hands and nods at him to signal him to come in. Floyd then sucker punches Ortiz. Ortiz in shock looks to Cortez for a penalty. Cortez has never called "box" and actually hasn't called for action to resume as he's looking at the clock-man. Had Ortiz not been knocked out Cortez most likely would have penalized Floyd. Floyd is savvy and full of guile, and knocks out Ortiz. Cortez has his hand forced, he can either count out Ortiz and say the action had resumed or look like he's incompetent and lost control of the fight. Cortez counts out Ortiz, fight over.

I think Mayweather is an asshole, and has no class, but his antics with Larry Merchant were more deplorable than his "cheap shot".

The more I think about it and after watching it a few times, Ortiz got what he deserved. It wasn't as though he threw an accidental low blow. That headbutt was flagrant and intentional, and the fact that he tried to hug Mayweather three times showed that he knew it was a fucked up thing to pull.

Lesson: If you're going to intentionally cheat, don't try to be a pussy about it afterwards... at least keep your hands up.
