See the thing is... I've sorta hit her before. Not anytime recently I don't think... but she knows if she pushes me to that point, I will hit her once, just hard enough to make her stop, then walk away.... which explains why she slapped and ran.

It didn't hurt bad enough for me to chase her down and give her a tap on the head, but it was enough to get my adrenaline going and for me to give her a REALLY dirty look.

But when I have hit her in the past, It was like a open handed tap to the back/side of the head. Just enough to make her stop and say 'Ow boohoo' and move about her business. I've never like... really hit her.

I mean, what woman hasn't play fought (wrestled, boxed, whatever) with like...a boyfriend or something? You're not out to bust someone's lip or anything, just horsing around.

The only exception to the "hit in anger" rule I think a man should just let it slide is if he did something TRULY wrong to warrant getting hit...like...you gave your wife some STD you got from some skank you were screwing around with. Yeah, that's deserving of getting a pop in the mouth.
