Building shook in Baltimore Hopkins evacuated us for an hour which was far worse than the actual quake.

I felt it in New York.
There was one back in spring of this year that I noticed while I was in my office in Harlem. I assumed it was the building at that time rather than an earthquake. I got the hell out of the building, but not everyone on my floor noticed it. I went across the street to a coffee shop and just waiting for 30 minutes in case it was something structural with the building. We later heard it was an earthquake in Canada from news crews on the streets that were interviewing people.
I think this one is was felt more in New York because everyone here seems to be talking about it.

Some amusing tweets about the DC earthquake:
@TPCarney: Krugman says it wasn't big enough.
@comradescott: Evidently the quake occurred on a little known fault line outside of DC called "Bush's Fault". #tcot #p2
@calebhowe: Breaking: Obama administration points out they "inherited" fault lines from previous administrations.
@MaizeBlueNation: Fox News claims the Washington monument is leaning to the right, MSNBC claims it's leaning to the left. More news at 11.
@charliespiering: I won't stop shaking until Obama makes a speech telling me that everything is ok and that he has a plan
@Ben_Howe: As all of DC leaves work at the same time, the United States experiences a brief economic recovery.
@daveweigel: Was all set to loot in Dupont circle, then realized all we have are taco and cupcake stores.
@BrianHughes_: I wish I owned a bar in D.C. right now. #chaching
@JimPethokoukis Shot: Virginia Earthquake Chaser: Hurricane Irene

Honestly, though...I grew up in California and with earthquakes hitting quite often throughout my life. The one that hit today, was very much similar/if not a bit worse than most I had been in. Luckily I was never in any that actually did huge damage. My apartment in Brooklyn did sway back and forth for a good two minutes, which really surprised me.

Probably because of the way people react to "only" a 5.8 earthquake.
Having grown up in Los Angeles I would just like to say that the quake in the Virginia region today was a serious level earthquake. A couple more points on the Richter scale and there would have been some serious damage.

Yes, so a few points could be 10-1000x as powerful. If I were to simply give someone a charlie horse, it wouldn't really be a big deal. Imagine if I gave them a charlie horse that was 1000x more powerful. That'd be devastating.
It's ground breaking that amplifying something that much may dramatically change the course of what happened.
Back's comment stands as a very very good point.

The issue at hand is that Back tosses off "a couple more points" as if it could have easily swung that way with the flip of a coin, whereas there's a world of difference between a 5.9 and 7.9 earthquake in actuality.

If you knew for a fact that our government was in danger from outside enemies and a standing force to hold the capital was needed would you drop everything and go?
If the constitution was actually written in stone and big enough for everyone to read without aid, how tall would it be?
When the time comes, with who and how are we going to break the news to creationists? Because waiting for them to get smarter isn't working...

To me it's intereting the way your mind runs down a list of what could be happening and earthquake is pretty far down. The first one I was in out in California I remember thinking something like:
an airplane is flying very close by
a truck hit the building
why am I losing my balance? I'm not drunk
Could the neighbors speakers really shake things that much?
No you idiot it's an earthquake
Yesterday was similar but having been in a couple before I was much quicker to tell the people around me that it was an earthquake. My first thoughts were still things like an airplane is too close, what kind of vehicle is passing by to make the building rumble, wow, an earthquake in Virginia.

Soo.. a day later, I'm still wondering why a non-government office in Maryland was evacuated for the afternoon, a fact I learned less than an hour after the quake as I'm sitting in my office about 50 miles east of the epicenter back to work as normal talking to a woman in California. Somehow I think that office just felt like enjoying the nice weather.
