Obama's Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack: "Well, obviously, it's putting people to work. Which is why we're going to have some interesting things in the course of the forum this morning. Later this morning, we're going have a press conference with Secretary Mavis and Secretary Chu to announce something that's never happened in this country -- something that we think is exciting in terms of job growth. I should point out, when you talk about the SNAP program or the foot stamp program, you have to recognize that it's also an economic stimulus. Every dollar of SNAP benefits generates $1.84 in the economy in terms of economic activity. If people are able to buy a little more in the grocery store, someone has to stock it, package it, shelve it, process it, ship it. All of those are jobs. It's the most direct stimulus you can get in the economy during these tough times."

I wonder what the rate of people running for President reaching Cabinet level positions is? I'm not sure how Wikipedia determined this, but of the 11 Democratic primary candidates listed, we have the President, the Vice President, the Secretary of State, the Secretary of Agriculture, and Bill Richardson was nominated for Secretary of Commerce. It doesn't look like anyone from the 2000 Republican primaries made it, though Elizabeth Dole was a Secretary beforehand and a lot of them are just goobers, including some guy who campaigned on the 1611 King James Bible.

I think it is cute that they are trying to re-brand an entitlement program as an "economic stimulus" program. Got to admire the effort to provide some small thread of credibility to the notion that Obama's economic program has actually done anything to stimulate the economy for anyone other than the UAW. While I don't dispute the financial impact of food stamp spending, I really have to question the sanity of those that would think that it is some kind of "stimulus program." I would think that there are other, more efficient ways to stimulate the economy than messing with food stamps. I do think that the scope of what you can buy with food stamps needs to be reviewed because honestly, if you have food stamps for bread, cheese and milk, you should not be buying bottled water.

I guess that would depend on where you live. I stayed with my cousin for two weeks and there is no way in hell I would drink the tap water there, I actually felt sticky after taking a shower there.

The intent of the program may not be stimulative in nature ... but it does have a stimulative effect.

This isn't re-branding an aid program, it is only referencing what it does beyond its intent.

If it is a program and it has a stimulative effect, it's pretty fair to say that it is a stimulus "type" program.

Foodstamps seem like a stimulus to me. I think the only thing PB was concerned with was that because some bean-counter says each dollar spent is $1.84 into the economy they'll try and increase the size/spending of the program given our economy today.

Personally, I think the program needs reform, but I like the program itself. Like most everything though, these programs need to be taken in moderation else we end up with unintended consequences.
