View Full Version : Rip off Vets

Vets are like.. the biggest rip off ever. Why? Because you go there and they want to do a hundred tests that each cost $100 each. ANd then the pet doesn't even have anything wrong with them.

If you say no to the test then it's this guilt trip that you're a bad pet owner and care more about money.

I took Felix to get two shots and it cost me $188... and then the guy is like "Come in for a fifth booster and a leukimia test". Um I'm sorry I'm not an old spinster that has no one but her pets, I am young and have no money!

Vets....

Leloo, what was your official decision regarding the pet insurance?

I think I'm forgetting it. It covers like disasters, but it doesn't cover the shots or just to see the vet. Those are what are killing me.

Don't authorize any tests unless you think there's a problem with your dog/cat.

It's a second source of revenue, just like the glacoma test at the eye doctor, that you have to sign saying you decline to take the test (is like $20-25).

But you DO need to pay for the boostre shots, is part of the immune system protection.

Four shots for the same booster?

Do you get a print-out detailing the boosters, and when the next specific booster is due?

Usually there's 2-3 years in between most boosters, like rabies. While there's a ton of boosters all at once for a puppy/kitten. Otherwise, boosters should be like every other year for adult dogs/cats.

I agree Leloo.. vet bills kill me. I don't understand why both my parents grew up on farms, with farm dogs, who never saw the vet or had a shot, and lived a normal life? I think most of the vet shots are just plain BS.

To clarify, I'm not saying vets aren't useful and/or a huge advantage in keep your pets healthy.. but there's no way every dog and cat needs all those shots.

I agree, vets are a ripoff. That's why I take my 3 kitties to Petco Wellness Clinic for their vaccinations. $18 dollars for a package of 3 boosters. $10 dollars for rabies. NO vet costs. I only take my cats to the vet if they are sick, never for shots. Try looking for a clinic like that in your area, you'll save lots of money.

If you keep the cat in the house, exclusively, they really don't need all those shots. Mine don't get them, but their little paws never touch the out-of-doors. :)

If you have an outdoor cat makes sure you get everything possible. Otherwise, just go to a PetCo and get the package as stated by Lurky.

Don't take your animals to the vet unless they're SICK.

Mine don't either. Both are indoors cats so don't need to be vaccinated against everything they might pick up off of other cats.

Do keep an eye on their teeth though. While getting a pet's teeth cleaned might sound like an unnecessary expense, one of mine did lose a tooth to gum disease from too much build up of plaque.

Same for dogs. One of my mother's older dogs lost about half of his teeth due to that. I understand a lot of those problems come with certain breeds though (my mother's is a Miniature Schnauzer). As silly as it sounds, I actually brush my dogs teeth about once a week because I don't want to have to get his cleaned (huge vet bill for that).

Our vet actually told us that the reasons cats get fat and that they get bad teeth also comes from eating canned food. If you put the cat on a purely kibble diet it does a lot better.
