View Full Version : Committed to THW, but which weapon?

I'm got 3.5M burning a hole in my pocket.
I've decided to make a THW, Voln Fu Brawling dwarven rock wizard.
I need help deciding what to spend my cash on.
I could purchase a mithril claidhmore, and blow my whole wad, or
I could purchase a perfect 4x maul or a greataxe and be crushing fools.
I've swung a claidhmore and I love the weighting, I like stunning things every hit. I haven't played with the maul or greataxe yet, and hoping to get some opinions on what weapon type I should focus on.
I've heard tell a lot of warmages don't even use claidhmores any more once they're outside of their 30 days.
Thoughts and suggestions?

A third option I didn't mention was save my money and buy some nice armor at a later date.

Since you're not bonding, I'd say get both a maul and a greataxe. I've been using a greataxe on my paladin with excellent results. If I started hunting stuff that was wearing heavier than chain, I may consider bonding to a maul. Either way, the DFs and AvDs on them are both gross against most monsters.

Claidhs early, mauls through the midrange, then claidhs again later IMO. You get to the point where your AS is so shit that you need the massive weighting to be effective.
I have a mithril claidhmore I could sell you if you want to go that route. PM me.

Also so that I don't just seem like I replied to shill my claidhmore to you, I warmaged (albeit without Voln Fu) from level 0-57 and can answer questions if you have them.
Are you going to be doing Spell Aim? I imagine not, since THW+Brawling+CM (you better be singling!) is a lot of TPs. Until you have Kick II you'll be relying on blessable weapons, so I'm changing my recommendation: you want a good 4x-5x blessable maul until you master Voln, at least. A claidh's no good on the undead. :)

I'm actually going to neglect CM for a while.
My Training Plan will look like this:
1x THW
1x Brawl
1x MIU
1x AS
1x PF
1x HP
2x Spell Aim
1x EMC to 24 ranks
2x Spell Research (27 MjE by level 18, then up to 909, then to 425)
1x-2X Air Lore to 24 ranks
Spare points will be thrown into air lores and spells to reach the 1 sec rt barriers.
I'll start to think about CMs when I finish out air lores and EMC

Since you're gonna have Fu and Aiming, neglecting CM is livable. If you were just swinging it would be a big no-no because those AS points are invaluable. The rest of your plan looks on-point. What armor do you plan to wear?

I was going to stick to Full Leather for a good long time actually. Buy Wizard spell ups and spell tank the low levels. Push to 913 eventually, and have 430 by 30.
Maybe eventually some time push into LBP 50+

You've more or less got shit figured out. Post and let us know how it's going on later. Your character concept seems cool and different.

It all depends on where you hunt, don't underestimate battleaxes though, they rock.

Just an FYI. If you're going Voln, you'll want a blessable weapon for undead. Claidhmores, which have 40 points of natural crit weighting, cannot be blessed. If you intend to primarily hunt undead until you master voln, you may want to hold off investing in a good claidhmore.

Either 2x spell aim and go pure or drop it completely. Those are valuable points youll need, and make sure you have 425 at 25 as its a huge as increase for when youre not fuing. You wont need the mje ranks since youll have 24 air lore, enough to knock what should be your 5 second rt to 1. Spell goals should be 506, 425, 913, and then up to 1x mje in that order. 919 isnt really sustainable until around 30 or 35 so you shouldnt worry about that.

You don't have the points to do what you're trying to do.

Actually they may be he ideal weapon for warmages. Not for any other class really, but they are kinda great for warmages.

I recommend Ranged/Fu or THW/CM. You don't have the points to THW/CM/Brawl/Perception, etc.

I'm actually sacrificing both perception and CM to do it.
I don't foresee it being a huge AS or Maneuver problem until substantially higher levels, and I'll worry about a fixskill if it comes to that.
It's more a roleplaying combination, as well as a way for me to do almost everything I want to do in the game in one character.
If this build works, post some logs.

5x forged, works like a charm.
You concentrate intently, focusing all your energies.
With instinctive motions, you weave to and fro striking with deliberate and unrelenting fury!
You swing a double-winged dark golvern battle-axe at a Grimswarm troll ranger!
AS: +399 vs DS: +322 with AvD: +40 + d100 roll: +66 = +183
... and hit for 77 points of damage!
Wild upward slash removes the troll ranger's face from his skull!
Interesting way to die.
[You have earned 45 prestige points.]
The troll ranger falls to the ground and dies.
A Grimswarm troll ranger seems to lose an aura of confidence.
A Grimswarm troll ranger seems to lose some internal strength.
You swing a double-winged dark golvern battle-axe at a Grimswarm troll guard!
AS: +399 vs DS: +172 with AvD: +40 + d100 roll: +78 = +345
... and hit for 175 points of damage!
Gruesome, slashing blow to the side of the troll guard's head!
Skull split open! Brain (and life) vanishes in a fine mist.
[You have earned 45 prestige points.]
The troll guard falls to the ground and dies.
You swing a double-winged dark golvern battle-axe at a Grimswarm troll raider!
AS: +399 vs DS: +176 with AvD: +42 + d100 roll: +21 = +286
... and hit for 135 points of damage!
Blow to eye impacts the brain.
The troll raider twitches violently, then dies.
[You have earned 40 prestige points.]
The troll raider falls to the ground and dies.
Your flurry of strikes leaves you off-balance and out of position.
