View Full Version : Dispute Hotel Damage Charges

Story:
So a group of 12 of us went on vacation. We booked 3 rooms at a Rodd hotel which required a credit card. My friend Jess put her credit card down to hold the 3 rooms. During check-in I put my credit card down on my room only. We have a great weekend we check out and that is that.
Three days later Jess calls me saying that she got a call from the Hotel Manager saying they charged her 200$ for a broken table in room 220 (My room) and put it on her credit card. She said that
The Manager said "Maintenance couldn't fix the table so they had to buy a new one. I have charged you because it would have taken to long for me to find the credit card that the room was charged too. You may pick up the table if you want it."
Upon checking out I cleaned our room spotlessly and the table was fine. I want to dispute these charges but it's not my credit card they have charged and I would rather handle it than my friend who was not involved in the room. The hotel is about a 4 hour drive in another province and I would rather not make a trip there and resolve it over the phone.
How should I go about this?

Better Business Bureau. Make a call yesterday.
Apparently I'm the highest maintenance bitch that ever pitched a bitch because Houston BBB know me on a first name basis now but you know what?? The jackass shit that always happens at those mass consumer places gets fixed about as quick as I can push the conference call button and I'm okay with that.
Corporations dont police themselves. You have to do it for them.

Admit you broke the table in a drunken rage and pay your friend the 200 dollars.

BBB has no power. Just so you know. If you're a company, you can pay them to become part of their club and get a better rating.
Tell her to dispute the charges and you should file a complaint with the executive office for the hotel company. Skip customer service, skip that location, go corporate, go big.

Call the hotel and explain your side of the story. I doubt you left the hotel as spotlessly as you claim, but if you honestly didn't break the table, give the hotel a chance to correct the problem. If you don't get any help there, go through the credit card company for your friend.

If you are calling the Houston BBB and they know you by the sound of your voice.. you are a fucking bitch that wants to be a bitch about everything JUST to be a fucking bitch.
After 20 years in the hotel industry.. I have no time for people like you.

No. Like someone who has so little in her life that she feels it necessary to call the BBB everytime everything doesn't go exactly her way. You do realize that everytime you call there, the people at the BBB gather around and use your calls for laughs, right?
PS - You know I love you on the Internet.. but there is no way I could deal with you in real life. My wife has a good friend who is like this and I cannot stand her because she is like this. Always looking to get something for free with something doesn't go exactly her way. I refuse to go out to dinner/drinks/movies/anything in public with her because of how she is.

It's not rage.. it's 20 years of experience dealing with people like that. I avoid them.. and when I can't, I make fun of them to their face in hopes that they realize how obnoxious their behavior is.

Hah! You would deal with me alright. I know your type too! I could get you to do whatever I wanted you to do with a lifetime UFC ticket or perhaps....a gift card to Loewes?
PS. It is true I do always get what I want, but I know nothing is free. ;)

Money doesn't motivate me in that manner.. sorry, you are barking up the wrong tree. If I need something at Lowes, I simply just go buy it.

I've always tried to deal with people on a human basis.. instead of treating them like shit. The result is I generally get what I want.. and they can keep their self respect intact.

1. Sure it doesn't.
2. So you are telling me you have never ever had a situation that could not be resolved by speaking to every human being possible until you are thinking...'now what'??

We honestly didn't break the table. We were not in our room at all besides to sleep. I'm gonna call and give them a chance to correct it but if not I'll ask for their executive office and call the credit card company to dispute the charge.
Is there a chance that they are doing a fraudulent charge to Jess because her Credit Card was only on her room and I put mine down on the room with the broken table?
Shouldn't you be rioting? Time to get a new sofa set!!!

Tell your friend to dispute the charge with her cc company.
Your friend needs to dispute the shit out of that. Charging her credit card because it was TOO HARD to find the credit card correctly associated with the room? Bullshit.

There is a gigantic chasm between "never ever" and "[The Houston BBB] know me on a first name basis"
Yeah, fuck that noise, Dex. You know what's up.
I hear thats how she's been staying at these hotels in NYC. Once she gets blacklisted she's moving back to Texas.

This is completely true. Next up, a suite at the Warwick. I'm pretty sure I can get one of them to look at me funny so I can get my stay comped.

Your friend should be able to dispute the charges under the simple fact that the hotel charged HER credit card for a room she was NOT paying for. The whole thing sounds rather sketchy. Talk to the highest person you can at the hotel, if that doesn't work go over them to their corporate. But, beyond anything else, BE POLITE. Yelling, swearing, threatening or even using "I'll write to the president" will get you absolutely nowhere and will honestly close doors for you. Most often if you are nice about it, people will try and help.
As far as the BBB goes.... If you get no where with the hotel after doing everything you can, contact them. Usually via email, they will contact you back within 48 hours. Don't expect them to get the company to roll over and play nice, it doesn't always happen that way. You'll have to prove 100% you're in the right, they're in the wrong and then the hotel has to actually care about its BBB rating.

Alright!
I called the Rodd about 5 times on the hour every hour since 11:00 and I left 2 messages on her line.
The front desk guy kept giving me dodgy responses like she's not in and oh she was here but then left again. He then put me on hold, called her cell phone and got back to me and was like she has you on a list of things to do today and will get back to you.
Finally I found out that the corporate office is about 5 minutes away from my house! I drove down there, talked to the head of operations and he is going to give her a call and get back to me tomorrow.
I shall keep you posted!

I'm going to assume a 'Rodd' hotel is some sort of gay resort in Canada.
Am I wrong?
I'm probably wrong.

If he makes some claim that there is nothing he can do, ask for an itemized receipt for the table as well as the old table (it's yours, since you are being forced to pay for it). Sometimes they just do not want to be put through hoops and will realize it's just easier on them to refund you the money on the CC.
Is this a big hotel chain? If so, go through their customer service department if you still get nowhere with the GM or the AD.

Good for you! Keeping with it always helps... more often than not they'll try and run your through hoops until you decide its not worth the effort. If you show them you're not going to back down and let it slide they'll finally decide its not worth THEIR effort and give up.
Really, good luck with it!

I'm glad you asked. I didn't want to be the idiot asking the question that everyone else already knew the answer to but I also didn't care enough to Google it. I'm going to waste five seconds thinking about it. Research OR Development Department? Revisiting Old Dirty Diapers? Ripping Out Dude's Duodenum? And... done.

I was going to make a comment about how all Inspire's broken anal beads aren't due to a manufacturing error, but rather overuse.
It didn't really seem worth the time. But there it is anyway. Thanks a lot, PB!!

I was going to comment how I can certainly believe he is the type of person to bitch and complain and cry when things don't go his way... but then he had to add that he also answered BBB complaints.. which I found very difficult to believe.
So I just did the LULZ.
At least Inspire learned his lesson.. now he uses this instead of beads:

Being level headed and polite, in my personal experience, gets you light years farther. Treat people like adults and not the $8.50 an hour entry level position they are, and they usually will work with you if it's a genuine mistake. Treat them like dog crap, and that'll mean future call backs, escalations, additional work on your end, to get something you could have gotten rectified by the first lackey.
Just my opinion, of course.

You both have more interest in anal beads than I ever have had.
