So, the State of Virginia is a real pain in my eyeball. Why, you ask? Well let me tell you.
First off, I have to change my driver's license; and I have everything I sh ould need (My MN driver's license, my social security card, etc). I find out I need my birth certificate... I find this out just because I call, and ask, they say I don't, but my boss tells me I do. So I get my birth certificate mailed to me from my mom in MN. I have today off for doctor's appointments and changing my license... and lo and behold, I get to the fucking DMV, and the stupid fucker behind the counter tells me I need a copy of my marriage certificate or license. Why? I ask. Because I need PROOF OF NAME CHANGE, he says. I was NEVER TOLD THIS BEFORE, keep in mind. And EVERYTHING is in my new name -- MN driver's license, social security card, etc. So.. WHAT THE FUCK.
Will my stupid ex answer his phone? Of course not. I doubt he's smart enough to remember if he even has the god damned thing. My mom doesn't have it.
I'm so pissed off right now, it's unreal. Un fucking real.
~betheny, who would punch things, but fears damaging things.

Ish, that is a mess, hon. I gather you didn't bring a copy of your marriage certificate with you, and they won't accept your Social Security Card. Only thing I can think of to do is to write to (or call) Vital Statistics in MN and get a copy of your marriage certificate faxed to you. :(

I think they want an official copy... :(

Ish. Then, I guess, if you can't get hold of your ex, you'll have to have them mail you one...Gah!
HarmNone would be frustrated, too

I don't know, as soon as I'm not creeped out by the fact that you are all people I met over the internet?
Also, how hard can it be to ask Peam to mail you the papers?

Unfortunatley I live in Virginia. If your current license from your other state has your name on it (same name you want to keep I mean) then they shouldnt have a problem issuing you a new license for this state. A copy from vital statistics IS a valid piece since it's notarized when you recieve it (At least my birth certificate was notarized.)
Hope that helps in any way, I think you just got a dumbass you should call back and talk to management.

Actually, I think a copy from Vital Records (they call it Hall of Records in NYC) is considered "official." It has to have the raised state seal to be official, which the copies usually have. (They made me like 6 copies of my marriage certificate--all had the seal.) I went through that issue with my birth certificate as well.

6 copies? Did you use it as wrapping paper? :D

Whoever told you that you need another driver's license needs to do some homework. The full faith and credit clause says that one state's ID is just as good as another, regardless of what state you're in. If you're gonna become a permanent resident its probably a good idea but you don't HAVE to.

CT: LOL I have this odd way of losing...everything (my mind included) so I requested a few extras. You know the whole "I'll put this here so it will be safe!" thing then forgetting the safe place. I didn't ask for 6 though!!!

Kadumi, this is a brave new world.
Things really are different since 9-11.
I dont know about many things, but as far as banking we used to use different states DL's all the time for ID and opening accts and such, but rules are MUCH more strict now.
You really do need a DL of the state you reside in unless you are only going to be there a month or two if you want to be able to conduct business in a semi normal manner.

Actually in Connecticut, you HAVE to change your driver's license within two months of being a resident. I know that other states have similar requirements.
If you have a license from another state, you have to give it up, and accompany it with another picture ID, birth certificate and marriage license if your name change is caused because of it.
Connecticut insurance companies won't insure you until you have a valid CT license.

I hate to piggyback on this thread, but I have a similar problem.
I need an "official" copy of my birth certificate. However, my birth certificate is in Hindi.....and they won't accept it. They want an English one. How the fuck am I supposed to do that....call up the hospital in India where I was born?
I also need to change my voter's registration from MA to NY, and sign up for an absentee ballot. :(
(just realized it's late May and he's leaving in three weeks, one of which I'll be on vacation in Texas....ARGH)

You have to get a certified translation, either through the Indian embassy here, or the american embassy there.

Same thing in MA. When I moved from NY I got pulled over once and the officer informed me that if I'm a resident of Massachussets, I need to get MA tags and an MA license.
The E, the people who were asking you for your birth certificate in English couldn't give you any information as to how you'd go about getting your birth certificate translated? I'd also call the Hall of Records and ask them if they know how you could get that done as well. You'd think they'd know.

In California, I don't remember how long it is, think 10 days. But, as soon as you get a job, you are considered a resident and NEED a CA DL, otherwise you are driving unlicensed. My mom found out the hard way.

I get weird looks when I have to present my birth cert. It's a huge piece of paper with ribbon and wax seal and it's signed by Alexander Hague (or someone with by dir on his behalf I'm betting) since I was born abroad yada yada yada. I always get asked "Is that thing real?"
Nothing real insightful to add to this thread though sorry Beth.

Too goddamn funny, you needn't put Virginia down specifically the same exact thing just happened to my wife in Pa. So its not a certain state, its the general concept and operational guidelines for DMVs.
But on another note, if you are divorced just use your maiden name?
CrystalTears
05-24-2004, 07:10 PM
She would still have to produce the document stating that she can use her maiden name again.
DMV sucks with technicalities and policy/procedure. Since I have to deal with them on a daily basis, to them I say :fu:

I'm so with Beth on this one. New states and their new requirements fucking suck. Also, Beth, can't you show them a copy of your divorce decree and get shit changed back?
Now to share.
When Jake and I moved from AZ to Nevada we got our DLs here. If you're under 25, they make you take a written test. WTF. So we go take the fucking test and both miss too many questions by ONE. Stuff like, "what's the weight requirement for a baby to be in a carseat in Nevada?" Well shit.
So we had to go back the next day and re-take the test, and this time instead of scan-tron sheets we got cool touch-screen computers with the picture corresponding to the question.... in case we were too stupid to get it, yanno.
The only cool thing about Nevada's DMV is that vanity plates are cheap.
I comiserate with you, Beth.
