First I've heard of it, but it's an infomercial on NBC right now.

I see why AOL is doing this, to make more money. But for some reason I think it's wrong. Jury in my head is still out though on why.

Latinos are a large part of the population in the US. Many are more comfortable interacting in spanish. No big deal. AOL will go where the money is thats all.

Here in north jersey we also as I said have many atms with english, spanish,chinese, korean and japanese.

I found it so amusing the time this man came into me to make a complaint that the atms offered more languages than just english for use. I pointed out that the default language was english and no one would make him use any language other than english but he was still quite unhappy.

I told him I would pass on his complaint and hoped he had a good day.:bye:

Take a peek at how much of CokaCola's total income is taken in abroad. Or GM, or Microsoft. Money talks. Companies dont give a damn whose it is, or what language they speak. If there is enough to make it worth their while they will conduct business in that language.

You can fight that tide and lose, or embrace it and use it to your advantage. The choice in yours.

I'm all for the marketing of products to other countries, which is what this thread is supposed to be about.

I am, however, against the policy of facilitating people not learning the native language. I think that we, USA, are damn near alone in this practice. My trips abroad lead me to no locale that had signs, menus, etc in any language but the local tounge. I'm cool with that. If I don't want to learn the language than I deserve to order a shit sandwich :cool:

Well I know my father and many of his friends enjoy using spanish language sites and reading spanish language newspapers in ADDITION to the other english american speaking news sources they utilize.

I would put my fathers english grammar and vocabulary up against anyone elses here. And dont even try to match his ability with the spanish language or Quechua for that matter, the third language he speaks. I help my cousin and his family every day with their english and they are all improving quite well and totally able to conduct most business transactions on their own.

I have no problem with businesses going where the money is. If companies want a better chance to get my fathers business, a spanish speaking website or tech support line can be a good way to do so. My cousins may be improving now, but when they first arrived, the spanish speaking help lines for the bank and telephone companies and the like were incredibly helpfull. These companies are forward thinking and hope that people like my cousin will remember them and have goodwill towards them even after their english improves.

It's just business fellas. Thats all.

English is not the official language of the US, which is why no one "has" to learn it. I'm willing to wager that every single one of the countries that you're thinking about had an Official Language, which is why the sinage is as it was.

Fortunately, there are Bills before Congress (as there have been for 20 years) to make English the official language. Further, more than half the states in the US have made English their official language. I have no problem with immigrants choosing to view websites in their native tongues, so long as they are capable of reading and writing English. You don't want to learn English, get the fuck out of this country. Unless, of course, any of you can prove that the Founding Fathers spoke anything other than English, and that it was even a concern (and not the oversight that it was) to worry about our national language. If they could see the future, they surely would've amended the Consitution.

I always ask where the center I am speaking to is located. Its funny, they are not allowed to lie, but they dont like to admit if they are located in say India or the Phillipines or something. Always worth a grin.
