So..I go in to take a test today before I can start classes. I fly through the reading and writing portions, not a problem. When it comes to the math portions, I'm a little concerned..I was never that good at math, and Its been 5 years + since I was in a math class.

Well, I get a choice of 4 tests..and ask for a lower one, aiming to get into some form of Algebra, and learn my way back up again. She hands me the test, says to begin and I open it up. First question?

#1. Binomial Theorem

Use the Binomial Theorem to find the fifth term of (x+2y)^10.

Erhmm..yah..I don't remember THAT in Highschool. So I scan down to question four.

#4. Gauss-Jordan Elmination Method.

Use the Gauss-Jordan Elimination Method to find the values of x1, x2, and x3 :
2x1 - 2x2 + 2x3 = 3
3x1 + x2 - x3 + 7
x1 - 3x2 + 2x3 = 0.

I'm suddenly feeling very...feint..:barf:

My old advisor failed those tests, and he had take "Pre-college math" because of it. He's now has a PHD in computer science and a Masters in Mathematics.

Oh... Binomial Theorem is so simple.

<< #4. Gauss-Jordan Elmination Method.

Matricies anyone?

By the way... what were you going into?

Before I scrolled down, I knew that Kranar had answered these questions.

Kranar, I have to say you have quite a knack for the numbers.

I don't know how it is in all states, but in Texas you can be exempt from all pre-college testing if you score high enough on the SAT's, ACT's, or our state test (TASP). I scored high enough on all 3 to where i didn't have to take placement testing. I think I would have been just as confused as Adredrin, though. I can do problems if you don't assign weird ass names to them (ie. Gauss-Jordan). Just tell me that I need to create a matrix to solve it, and I can. Names confuse me.

By the way, for anyone who cares (and if you don't, I'll tell you anyways) I just moved to my own apartment because I start college myself in 2 weeks. :-D :-D :-D

I'm heading to a real school after two years of community college, myself.

I just moved into an apartment a few weeks ago. It's nice. Congrats.

Kranar lives, eats, and breathes numbers. I'd be willing to bet that if you could take away numbers, Kranar would commit suicide.

I suck at math.

I took the same sort of test before I started back into college after a 5 year break as well. I was placed into what is called Math 90. Well, I was so depressed about my math skills, I managed to take an entire year of community college without taking a single math class. At least I had a full year of a 3.8+ GPA. Now I'm ready to start failing classes ;) I kinda regret putting it off because I have to start it this fall.

My brother, when he went back into college, had to start from the beginning as well. He majored in education and specialized in math. I think I'll hire him to tutor me.

I'm going into Computer Science, course. I'm aiming for an Internet Specialist right now, and expanding from there.

Actually, My answer sheet says the first one should be : 2x1 - 2x2 + x3 = 3. Hehehe

it if makes you feel any better you will most likely brain dump that stuff very quickly after you are done being tested on it. it's only been a few years since i took some of the differential calculus courses and i cannot remember anything. if you don't use it you will more than likely lose it.

<< I'm going into Computer Science >>

Always good to see CS students here.

I'd go into CS, but I think there's more chance for a music education major to make it.

Fucking Bush.

Well CS is a huge field, so it depends what you later decide to specialize in.

Programming is generally the hardest thing to specialize in, but then again, every year the demand for programmers increases by 3000.

Those numbers make my head hurt. I certainly don't miss math.
