Just a quick and easy question about cyber security. I'm using AVG anti-virus free edition 2011 and Spybot S&D resident. Is this a good amount of protection or more than is necessary? I'm leaning toward not running the Spybot as a resident and just running it every couple weeks as a checkup. Anyone else run it and prefer to leave it running?

Unless leaving the resident part of Spybot slows your machine down, why not leave it up? 99 times out of 100 it may not be necessary, but I'd definitely be glad of it that one other time.

Best thing to do is use a user profile that is not set up for admin privs. Also lock down file permissions for the other user accounts.

I prefer Comodo products and CCleaner. This combined with a router with NAT and IP filtering, randomizing you passwords, and not executing suspicious files will go a long way.

I've never had a computer virus.

I find a well configured noscipt plugin for firefox invaluable.

Oh, yeah I use Noscript, Ghostery, Adblock, and NoRedirect for plugins.

I have another plugin that if you visit a site that has HTTPS it will learn it, and any attempts in the future are made to connect to the HTTP version it will auto HTTPS instead. I forgot what the name was..

I run AVG 2011 + Malwarebytes every other day.

That's win, right there.

I run AVG 2011 + Malwarebytes sometimes on rare occasions when I think about it...

Running an antivirus is far from "cyber protection." That said, I run AVG on my desktop and I'm not even sure that it's installed on my laptop. Running multiple antivirus programs simultaneously is not the best idea.

CCleaner is tits.

I liked SVG a lot less since I found it hides processes in System, but for free protection why not.

Don't browse recklessly, and you won't need a cyber-condom. Bobmuhthol said something to that effect once, and he went to Bentley.
