They only work on objects you can hold in your hand, and don't work on enruned or mithril boxes.

I believe it bypasses traps as well, if I remember correctly? I am curious as to whether it would fit on my keyring. I have like 7 keys already (apparently I want to grow up to be a janitor)

It will bypass some traps. But I have not extensively tested all traps.

I had one for a while and never had it set off a trap. The only short coming I thought it had was that you have to be holding what you unlock, so if you want to open a box out in the field, you have to have the box in one hand and key in the other... not a particularly good way to be if critters come in. On the plus side though, it takes no round time, so you could script through it pretty easily to limit your exposure to next to nothing.
