Dave Chappelle is back, bitches!

The beloved comic is planning a new TV show with a paid subscription service like Netflix, Sony’s Crackle, or Hulu, which are now competing in the original programming game, a plugged-in source told Flash.

“Dave Chappelle’s going back to TV,” tattled our insider. “It’s not for a network. It’s for Netflix or Crackle or some other subscription service.”

Chappelle had one of the biggest flameouts in show business history when he abruptly went MIA in 2005, bolting his top-rated “Chappelle’s Show” in its third season. The funnyman shocked the world when he walked away from the $50 million Comedy Central would have paid him over the next two years.

“I felt like some kind of prostitute or something. If I feel so bad, why keep on showing up to this place?” Chappelle confessed to Oprah Winfrey when he returned from his strange pilgrimage to South Africa. “The hardest thing to do is to be true to yourself, especially when everybody is watching.”

More recently, Chappelle has been dropping by comedy clubs from Los Angeles to San Francisco for surprise standup gigs, calling himself the “Big Foot of Comedy” because “you never know when he’s going to show up.”

A source at Hollywood’s Laugh Factory said Chappelle has been trying out fresh material: “It’s all new. He started off talking about his career and what he’s going to do now, because someone like him can’t do ‘Dancing with the Stars.’ He’s obviously working on some new project.”

Chappelle’s been joking about his stalled career and riffing about President Obama, but not all of it has been side-splitting hilarity. “It was really depressing. He was talking about the past, about the show,” said a comedy circuit veteran who caught a Chappelle gig at The Comedy Store in L.A.

“Not that many people walk away from a show like that on Comedy Central and get a second chance. But he’s still incredible.” Chappelle appeared super-sober, said our source: “People were offering him [marijuana], but he wasn’t taking any.”

A move to a streaming service like Hulu would allow Chappelle to bypass the lack of creative control he claims he had at Comedy Central parent company Viacom.

Meanwhile, Netflix has thrown down the gauntlet and shown that it will pay top dollar for original shows, recently signing a $100 million deal for a David Fincher-directed series, “House of Cards,” starring Kevin Spacey.

And Sony’s Crackle already has a deep comedy lineup with “Groundlings” based on the famed sketch troop, and “Backwash,” featuring Jon Hamm, Jeffrey Ross, Sarah Silverman and “West Wing” alums Allison Janney, Josh Malina and Dule Hill.

Between the responses to this thread and the reputation remarks I've received, I get the feeling people don't like Dave?

Interesting.

Interesting.

I don't think it's his humor.. it's more about his gigantic personal meltdown that led people to not like him.

I think he's funny.. I just think he's a complete idiot.

I think he's pretty awesome. I still watch some of his old comedy on youtube every couple months.... "I dunno, sometimes you just gotta race", and when he talks about his white friend Chip.

Chappelle show was awesome. I always heard his meltdown was because he felt he was being racist towards black people or something. I thought he was hilarious on quite a few of his Comedy Central shows, but now I'm afraid that makes me a giant racist.

Wouldn't you be suspicious if everything made sense to you? Talk about a classic sign of a false reality. Turn left, PB!!

He didn't walk away because of drugs. Drug addicts don't walk away from 50 million dollars. Although I wouldn't fault him for getting stoned before each and every show, as long as he's making people laugh. There were never any reports of that going on anyway, and although he has admitted to smoking weed, evidenced by "Half-Baked" which he was unhappy about its portrayal anyway.

He and one other dude were writing for his show... that's it, but he didn't have control over it even though it was the epitome of Comedy Central's line up at the time. He had a vision for his show and it wasn't vibing with what the network's vision was. He walked. He's not only a stand up comedian, he's a stand up guy, and the pressure got to him.

"I wasn't crazy but it is incredibly stressful," Chappelle, 32, said during his appearance on "The Oprah Winfrey Show"

"I felt in a lot of instances I was deliberately being put through stress because when you're a guy who generates money, people have a vested interested in controlling you," Chappelle said."

"I would go to work on the show and I felt awful every day, that's not the way it was" he said. "I felt like some kind of prostitute or something. If I feel so bad, why keep on showing up to this place? I'm going to Africa. The hardest thing to do is to be true to yourself, especially when everybody is watching."

His comedy is genius, but he's human just like the rest of us.

He lives on a farm in Ohio... that's how down to earth he is. He was never in a mental facility and he was never on drugs, but if you believe those things I don't blame you, I blame the media and it's collective persuasive power. They can make you believe anything they want, no matter who it hurts, because they know most people won't bother to research the truth for themselves.

Dave is a smart guy and he didn't want to sell out. He could have... lots of people would have done it for a lot less money, but you can't put a price tag on some people's dignity. Because of that, my respect level increased for Dave after he walked away not because he was crazy or smoking crack, but because of his own personal convictions. In his own famous words, when he was alluding to what goes on behind the scenes in Hollywood when you reach a certain level of fame and success, he said... "Your soul is priceless."

He talks about how he was reaching the 'next level' of fame, and he wanted to leave before he became trapped... by the success, the contract, whatever it was, he didn't want any part of it any longer. People laugh because he's funny, and he wants that obviously, but his decision was a swift and calculated one and he did what was best for his sanity and peace of mind.
