KIEV (Reuters) - Two smoking soldiers set off tons of ammunition that killed five people, caused $725 million in damage and sent debris showering across southern Ukraine last week, the emergencies minister said on Tuesday.
A series of blasts hurled debris as far as 25 miles after fire broke out last Thursday at a warehouse complex where 92,000 tons of artillery ammunition was stored.
Blasts were still heard on Tuesday, emergencies minister Hryhory Reva told parliament.
"At about 12 o'clock on Thursday, two servicemen, who were stocking military ammunition, began smoking at their working site. It caused the fire and set off the explosions," he said.
The blasts caused some $725 million in damage to the defense ministry and population in the Zaporizhya region, he said. They destroyed buildings in a two-mile radius, including a local railway station.
A minor gas pipeline was also damaged. Metal fragments and other debris were thrown 40 km, causing fires in nearby towns.
Authorities evacuated some 7,000 people from the surrounding area. People started to return home on Tuesday, five days after the initial blasts.

That was my point, two idiot soldiers needed to smoke so bad their common sense dissapeared. and people died.
Maybe they'll stop now.
Jeez E, I haven't posted in awhile and you still dun like me eh?

I was actually applauding you. Apparently you took me for sarcastic. I was not. Bitter cynicism and disregard for human life is what makes a good PC poster.

Smoking != idiot. If you are going to use the negative effects of smoking as a reason, you should also ban drinking alcohol, driving cars, owning firearms, voting and anything else than can cause "bad things to happen". Hell, voicing your opinion should also be banned.
All you bitches shoving through the no-smoking laws in bars and restaurants ... I hope when one of your civil liberties is taken away you don't bitch about it.
And for the record, I don't smoke in restaurants, but if I want to, it should be up to the owner of the restaurant, not the government, if I can or not.

Hey, chill. I was only pointing out the idiots put smoking ahead of lives. They were loading AMMO and lit up.
Not to start something over smoking laws. Shesh.

No worries Caiylania.
Suppa is ussually on target, but clearly has some issues with non smoking legislation. I think he would have to agree that smoking in a bar is a wee bit different from smoking around tons of explosives though
I agree those guys were pretty stupid, but I also am pretty sure that there may be a bit more to come from that story.
Ammunition is made to not just 'go off" if its dropped or if a ciggarette or some such contacts it. Well, at least it is here in the US. Goodness knows standards may be different elsewhere.
Even with those safety features I would assume anywhere large amount of ammunition is stored would be a non smoking area. I mean why tempt fate?
Perhaps Ranger or Anticor could help clarify that.
Of course they could have accidentally started a fire among the other normal combustibles and as it grew in its intensity was enough to cause the munitions to explode.

Yeah, sorry for the rant :x I don't like smoke in bars/restaurants either, just hate that we need a law for it. Should leave that up to the owners.
And yeah, tards that smoke around munitions depots are stupid. Again, sorry for the "explosion" hahah.

Meanwhile if they ever make pot legal... going to be hard to keep up on the banning of cigarette smoking from public places, if it's not already a local law.
Smoking, either way =
I think you misread that Skirm, they started a fire that sent everything off... if you toss a bullet in a fire it will go boom.

Yeah? So if I went to the sidewalk in front of your place and turned my boombox up to the red zone, you're okay with that 'cause it's my civil right to play music?
And if I took a shit on the sidewalk in front of your door, that's okay too because I got the right to defecate? The smell from shit's a lot milder than cig smoke, that's for sure.
Maybe you're in that restaurant of yours, and I ride my daughter's skateboard in next to your table. Skateboards are legal!
Oh, hey, maybe I bring a date and I unzip and she gives me a BJ right at the table next to yours. I have the right to have sex too!
You picking anything up here?
Your rights stop where your habit is obnoxious and causing a public nuisance. It doesn't matter what the owner of your restaurant things, I can't dump in the aisles, I can't get a blowjob at my table, I can't set up a boombox and crank it all the way up, and I can't yell obscenities at the top of my lungs. If he lets that shit go, the cops'll shut him down.
The real deal here is that for about a century, the smokers got to do their shit everywhere, and the non-smokers got to choke a lot and shut up and take it. The smokers kept saying, "I got the right to smoke so if you're a pussy who doesn't smoke STFU or take a hike."
Anyone who blames the non-smokers for showing them the same respect now they got the upper hand got a short memory. Me, I'm real cool with my favorite bar and the local hockey rink not being choked with frigging smoke.

You missed the point of my post. The owners of the establishment should make the rules, not the government. There is an anti-smoke law in parts of Baltimore I believe (forget the exact city, its in MD), but it doesn't cover the whole city. You can LITERALY walk a couple blocks from one bar (where you cannot smoke) and into another bar (where you can).
The GOVERNMENT is putting the smoking bars out of business, because the smokers will walk the two blocks. The GOVERNMENT imposed laws are directly governing the success of a privately owned business.
It's not about respect or lack of it. Don't you think that privately owned companies should be able to manage themselves? I don't care for smoke in bars or restaurants either, matter of fact, there are several I don't go to because of it. I relate and understand why you wouldn't want to go into one. But it isn't about that.
You picking anything up here?
It isn't about smoking. It's about folks being able to manage their own lives. Don't want to smell smoke? Don't go into a smoking establishment. Work with your management to provide smoking area's or smoke free zones.
Vote with your dollars and go to the "clean air" next door that the smart store owner advertises. People are smart, smokers or not -- there is a niche for both and neither needs Government saying you can or cannot smoke there..
Oh, and take your playground argument that "smokers got it their way now it's my turn" and blow it out your ass. It's not about who got what when.

I think based on that small story it would be pretty hard to judge what happened and who was at fault. I see this more as a story that seems to appeal to your agenda and thereby supports your skewed world view.
I would think that automatic fire protection would be an important part of a munitions depot, so who is really to blame there? The part of the story you omitted supplies that answer, but also a sabateur motive as well.

actually a bullet won't really do much in a fire
if it gets heated enough it will go boom, not very powerfull but boom all the same no?
Now when we are at an ammo dumb you have bigger bullets with bigger booms.
