Do merchants allow the alteration to change the metal type of an item anymore?

Nope. Not for the base metal -- at least, not usually.
Not on armor or weapons. Jewelry, yes, although if it's rare, you have to provide it. But definitely not on armor and weapons.

You can have metal ADDED to a weapon or armor in a decorative manner, like an eonake-hafted vultite longsword. It won't effect the abilities of the weapon and you might have to provide metal.

Depends on the merchant, it IS possible to find one that will.

It's also just as likely you'll get reported to staff and the GM that did the alter will be forced to redo it.
It's happened to several people I know, including myself.
edit: And the specific time I'm thinking of was just a matter of an unapproved noun for two daggers. Changing the base metal is a much larger issue.

Thanks for all your inputs.. I was trying to figure it out cause someone had mentioned it when I was trying to sell my titanium chain mail and it got me thinking if it still could be done.. Thanks.

Tried to get a blade altered to match my titanium chain mail and shield recently, was told it's a massive "no". They will not even consider titanium, and the existing amounts are just "pretty steel".

It is possible. I have had two done, one metal, one wood. The rule was though, the new metal/wood had to be the same or lesser enchant than the current one. Both we're done by GM's fulfilling monthly premie contest wins.

Which metals do you need to provide due to rarity, and where would one find such a metal IG?

I've had Siolan do such for a dagger for me, but it was a skinning knife, and she changed it from vultite to obsidian (huge difference and bigger penalty). But.. That is the only time I have had anyone change the base metal on a weapon, so.. :)

I had to provide golvern for the metal one. I think is sometimes depends on metal and the merchant. I've had some request the most common of gems, and others trim with rare items for nothing.

They are more lenient, with these, I have found. I've had items made from rare materials without having to provide them and super rare materials added to items that they sometimes wont work with.

Stiletto is totally an approved noun. :( Just because the word 'shoe' appeared before it, someone behind the scenes had to get all cranky pants.

Question about feature alters - I was told that one cannot "tell" people how to feel with their feature alters, but I am seeing more and more "lonely eyes," "depressed hair," "exciting noses."
Have they changed the rule on this or did these folks catch a break? I understand it totally, it is difficult to look at someone who is clearly excited with their "honorable stoic five braids hidden in a voluminous cloud of derision" hairstyle.
Just curious.

Eh..like any alteration, it sometimes depends on the merchant. They did used to be more lenient with the features. Now they tend to be more as you say, as well as the extra line being more strict on where it can be located.
