View Full Version : Would you consider not paying taxes if you disagreed with your government?

It is one way the people can refute bogus elections, or those electorate's descisions, without violence.

Imagine. According to recent polls, if 64% of people polled agreed to stop paying taxes due to their disagreement to the war in Iraq, how horribly it would cripple the so called "Top Brass."

Just throwing the idea out to everyone. Please answer with your own heart, mind, body, and soul.

I vote no. I'm sick of paying taxes out of my check, out of my ATM, out of my state's sales tax. out of my shipping and handling, and my generous tipping

When the person you didn't vote for comes into power and screws the fuck out of everything, in your own opinion of course, would you consider withholding Federal?

You live in this country, and are obligated to pay taxes because of that.(as much as I hate taxes peroid I accept that.) Don't pay them and enjoy the audit and jail time.

Sadly, I agree with Edine.

If you're willing to do the time, by willingly breaking the law, go for it. I'm all for civil disobedience, but not paying taxes, is not something I would do.

(Instead, I used my tax refund from good old President Bush to donate to John Kerry/MoveOn.org.)

You need to think out-of-the-box, man. Reconsider the 64%. A very large margin by any standards.

And, if 64% of the country took a gun and stormed Washington in a people's revolution.....

...yeah, you get the idea. It would still break the law - and you'd have to be willing to pay the consequences. No matter what you like to think, this is not a rule by majority in this country any more. It's a rule by money - and I doubt the moneymakers in this country would be backing your cause.

It is a felony, and wrong. Even if I hate the person in office (which I dont right now) I am obligated to pay taxes and will.

you need to think outside of your bubble because nobody would be paying taxes at all if what you said went down. you think i'd pay taxes to support homeless people or people in africa with aids? no i wouldn't. everyone disagrees with many of the things governments spend money on, suck it up or get the fuck out.

Ahh, but if, as he said, 64% refused, no way in hell are they tossing all of them in the clink, a problem with that is, that emans you stop buying, and if you stop buying...

I am thinking, he is meaning 64% of the whole, which would also mean 64% of each tax bracket, since this is simply a abstract thought/thread.

I agree with this (to a degree -- and will keep my own politics out of your ear[eyes]).

I pay my taxes to support a government, that as a whole, is a helluva a lot better then other governments, and I pay them to a country that I happen to feel is the best on the planet.

So, regardless if I think (say Bush) someone is a punk-ass bitch that needs to be hung by his balls from a tall oak hanging over a bed of large spikes or not, I know my taxes support my country as a whole, and on a whole, this country is number one in my book, so they get my support. If it called for the action you are speaking of, I guess it would simply be easier to move to another country, and if enough did that, somehow, I think the ones that were screwing up that bad, would get the hint, and derive ideas that would bring the folks that left (64%) back. Otherwise, they wouldn't be having anything to preside over.

Finiswolf, I think you are wrong there. Everyone moving away would leave the country with more like minded people pushing it even more to the edge be it left or right.

This has acctually been done before.

Henry David Thoreau pulled it back in his time. He wouldn't pay his poll taxes because he disagreed with things the government was doing. He got thrown in jail for it, but was gotten out a few days later because someone paid his poll taxes for him.

As a citizen, you're obligated to pay taxes.

Of course we are. Obviously, you just can't stop paying taxes. Unless you live under the grid and get paid under the table.

Revolutions do happen. There have been governments people have over thrown because they didn't like what they were doing. In most cases its bloody. Thats one way to do things.

In the intrest of trying to promote a more positive, progessive method for human behaviour, it behooves me to seek alternatives.

Or you can just vote for someone else and take advantage of the democratic republic we live in.

Only problem is, the other popular candidate voted pro-war... I guess you can vote for yourself.

Id say about 0% of the people who pay taxes agree with all of the things that they go for. Conservatives dont want to pay for layabouts to get free money and Liberals dont want to pay for war.

Btw wouldnt the IRS be able to garnish your paycheck and worse if 64% of the people didnt pay their federal taxes? I assume they could very easily make your life hell and would get the money either way. Jail time isnt the only thing they can do so saying they couldnt just put everyone in jail isnt accurate. Also doesnt the IRS give money to people who turn in tax evaders? If so U2U me your real name Backlash :)

One question i have though is if you get paid under the table, i was under the impression that only crappy jobs that pay slightly higher than minimum wage pay under the table like that. I never hear about jobs id actually want getting paid under the table.

I agree with that, but a United States with only 36% of the populous remaining? There would be nothing to govern. (In the grande sense)

Not to mention, that 64% moving, nor 64% not paying taxes would ever happen, short of some extremely serious shit hitting the fan. (The United States does not stand United anymore.)

If you're going to live here, pay the taxes for it or leave. If you disagree, there are a lot of ways to reform the government. If you're so lazy that your only form of protest is to not pay taxes then just don't live here.

That's just my opinion.

Plenty of construction or other types of manuel labor jobs pay under the table and pretty well.. Say around 12-20 an hour under the table. That's a pretty fair amount of money.

If you had 64% of people supporting you, you would win every election (maybe 30%, the way voter turnout is). You wouldn't need any financial schemes.
