View Full Version : My dirty little secret (shhhhhhhhh)...

Is............that I smoke. It's not a secret anyway, I know I've said this. Anyway, so I quit this week right, for the 100th time, heh. But, I'm taking Wellbutrin (sp?) to help me quit. For those who know what the hell it's Rx for, this shit is making me all "woooo woooooo". Nothing really bothers you, cos most times you're spaced out. It kinda feels great, rofl. Oh right, hmmm smoked like 1.5 stogs this whole week. Not so bad, since I started taking them this week. Go Wellbutrin!
Oh plus I locked myself in the house for a month. I'm having withdrawls from not going out. So, I think I'm gonna hit my boys house after work to just hang out. Hmmm...can't hit the bars, cos I heard you can have seizures if you drink a lot with these meds. But...I dunno, heh. Anyway, that's it. My posts are pointless.
Woman, I thought you had an actual juicy ass secret here!!
Ahh well, good luck on quiting smoking.

Welbutrin must be the miracle drug. Dr. suggested it for me because I couldn't remember things (yeah, it got to the point where my girl said "WTF, see a doctor"). A friend was perscribed it for depression, another to lose weight.

Yea, I used to take welbutrin for depression, and was told it could also help me stop smoking, what the fuck ever, I still smoke, and I did when I was on it for the 6 months I was taking it. It's just a damn sugar pill for doctors, dumb ass pieces of shit that only want my fucking money.

Oh my...hmmm, it all depends on the person then? And, how bad you wanna quit? I don't think you can just take it and the urge to smoke suddenly dissappears. I just don't keep any cigarettes around me. Outta sight, outta mind. I'm just glad I'm not eating everything in sight. Whoooshhhhhh

I am on the same pill to quit smoking and also the patch. Been on them since January, have not smoked yet. It works with the patch.

Hmmm...I'll make a note of that. Did the patch for 3 mo. too. Obviously, after the 3rd mo. I gave in!!! But, if I start feening for nicotine, I'll give that a shot. Made me nauseas though, I didn't like that.

SIDE EFFECTS: The most commonly noted side effects associated with bupropion are agitation, dry mouth, insomnia, headache, nausea, constipation, and tremor. In some people, the agitation or insomnia is most marked shortly after starting therapy. Some patients may experience weight loss. Uncommonly, patients may experience manic episodes or hallucinations. Four of every 1000 persons who receive bupropion in doses less than 450 mg/day experience seizures. When doses exceed 450 mg/day, the risk increases ten-fold. Other risk factors for seizures include past injury to the head and medications which can lower the threshold for seizures. (See drug interactions.)

Gotta love medicines that have a side effect of "may cause seizures"...

Could be that the patch was to much nicotine, try cutting it in half or a piece off so its not so much nicotine. Or skip the first step and go to the second.

Good luck with quitting, Lalana! It is not an easy task. I understand the Welbutrin really helps cut back the cravings if you are sincere in wanting to quit. If you do find you need the patch as you get further into nicotine withdrawal, use the weaker one not the strongest one (the second in the series). That's what my friend did, and it worked very well for her. Also, do NOT drink and take Welbutrin. No sense in taking risks where you do not have to. :)
Oh, and TheE.....Lalana's post about quitting smoking is just as important, and much more interesting, than a good deal of the things YOU post.

A) It was in reference to the supposed "letdown" of the huge secret the title supposedly hypes up.
B) As Dennis Leary says, "People always say "If you quit smoking now, you'll add 10 years onto your life. Wake up, people, they're the worst ten years - the ones at the end!"
Edited to add: C) I don't honestly expect people to give a shit what I post about, either. ;)

The forum is all about killing time and kickin' back. I wanna thank everyone who's made an effort to read my pointless thread and supporting me, to my mother and father who's been nagging me to stop and the Big man up above....WHERE'S MY AWARD!
Ummm...this medication is making me nuts, I swear to God! But, I haven't touched a cigarette! Go Welbutrin!
Edited to fix my post cos it didn't make sense...hmmm...does it now?
[Edited on 5-16-2004 by Lalana]
I quit smoking by switching to lippers.
Once I get a digital camera set up I'll send a close-up picture of my gums.
P.S. Don't substitute one tobacco product for another!
Post-post script - Glad the Zyban is working for you, I think, and this is probably not a popular opinion, that instead of being "weened" off smoking by switching to another product to help you quit that STILL CONTAINS NICOTINE (e.g. Nicorette) is incredibly dangerous. Mainly so, because they're giving you a high dose of exactly the addictive substance you are trying to rid yourself of. I remember chewing on three pieces of orange flavored 4mg Nicorette and thinking to myself, "these guys are fucking geniuses," make an even more addictive nicotine product, advertise as something "therapeutic" and sell large packs of it for 50 dollars (making them not only dangerous but economically unsound as well.)
I am glad the bupropion is working for you, I just wouldn't advise drinking *too* heavily with it, as it one of the most synergistic alcohol-interacting antidepressants around. Also, don't eat an MAOI while taking it.
Congratulations and good luck.

Not Zyban Stanley, Welbutrin. I will be so happy when this month is over. Yeah it makes me all loopy and antsy. And I talk a mile a minute. Wheather it be a conversation, or IM convo, whoa man. This stuff is insane.
Zyban/Wellbutrin = bupropion.
There are just different brand names for it.

Hell, you act like I know this. Wait, I worked with dr's, I should. Erm...I don't keep up with these anti-depressants. All I know is that my dr told me to use it for a month to see if it helps out. I'm feelin' great though, so it's okayyyyyy.

Haha. Well it looks like your seratonin levels are up, that's always a good thing ;)
Anyway, when prescribed a new medication, regardless of what the doctor says, it never hurts to take a peek in the PDR. Just uh... don't read *too* heavily into the side effects, I once looked up something like children's Tylenol in the desk reference book, and you'd think that the stuff is some kind of chemical weapon.

Quitting sucks and I still miss smoking. My parents were both heavy smokers and some of my earliest memories are of them sitting and smoking in the mornings with their coffee. Out of 5 kids 4 of us smoked. I started as a young teenager and smoked for 10 years until the day I found out I was preggers with my first, threw the pack away and didn't smoke again for 15 years. I had a partner at work that was a smoker and I started again. The thing is I never NOT wanted to smoke, I always missed it. I quit since then but I still want too. I wish I could be a social smoker, like one with my drink, ;but I'm so addicted that one smoke and I'll be back up to a pack a day. The thing is I HATE the way it makes me smell, my hair, my clothes, my breath.
I wish you luck Lalana and don't pick up the first one, its more addictive than drugs.

Lalana, your post has inspired me to try to stop smoking after 15 years!!! :D
Of course, I want the drugs! Did you just tell your doc you were quitting and you needed help or what?! I got a pack to last me until Monday, which is when I go see the doctor.
I did really good today, only smoking an entire smoke when the Roadmaster started screaming at me for doing something wrong :( Which isn't bad!!
Edit to add: this is the first time since I started that I've EVER tried to quit.

Welbutrin and Zyban are the same pill, just different colors. they developed wellbutrin for something and found out it helps with cigarette craveings so they marketed it as Zyban.
Same thing, anyway.

Heh MJ, nice to know I can inspire a couple people, heh. But, yeah, I think my body is use to the damn pills. It took about a week of craziness to get use to. I spaced a lot and I swore I felt like I had ADD. I couldn't pay attention to certain things for a long time, lolz. Like, I was all hyper then I'd wanna sit back and calm down. It's weird, but now it's like nothing. Haven't smoked a stog and I lost like 5 lbs, ROFL! Been running and stuff to get my mind off the cravings. Oh yeah, gum is your best-friend.
Plus, I found that lately I been spitting the truth to my friends. Usually, I'm real civil/nice about saying things that bothered me about them. But, lately I just turn around and tell them to STFU and look away. If you really know me or hang around me. I'm real neutral and calm. I'm not as flaky as I come off on this forum. And I have high tolerance to BS, but not this month. I don't know if it's the drugs or what, but I've been more blunt, ha! It's funny though.
Anyway, depends on your dr. I just told her I've tried everything, so we went to the next level. Might bump it up to another 2 mo. though. ;)

Welbutrin shouldn't make you feel "woooo woooooo". Welbutrin is an anti-depresesant, and commonly prescribed for chemical imbalances associated with depression, ADD, and common learning disabilities. Rarely also for panic disorder.
If Welbrutrin makes you feel woo-hoo, then that's a sign that your brain doesn't need it to balance the chemicals... which is a good thing! ;) When one *needs* an anti-depressant, the drug will bring them around to normalcy and not give any "woooo-hoo" feelings. If one takes an anti-depressant and it altars their mindset to feel different beyond "normal", that's a sign that your mind is just fine without it and that your Serotonin and all your groovy brain chemicals are in order and check.
Other anti-depressants commonly prescribed to those quitting smoking are Paxil, Prozac, and Zoloft. Generally for short term (2-12 weeks) because those who quit smoking go through a depression and mourning period, which the medication helps ease. Then, there's a weaning off of the anti-depressant period that can last up to a couple months.
But more important, I'm a smoker, since age 12 (and not going to date myself on my age now, but over 30). Have tried to quit seriously twice and failed. I honor you more than you know on your journey. And, I've seen my mom... smoker from age 14 to 46, multiple packs per day... and she quit, been smoke free for 3 years now. Be strong, you've more strength I do... give me another example to follow. :)

ya, but they get all drooly in meetings.
P.S. Today got Welbuterblahblah.. haven't really taken it yet. Only had like 7 cigs compared to normally much more. Must remember to buy candy. A great idea, buy smokes but don't have a way to light them as you threw away all your lighters. Then it's a PITA to find someone to bum a light off for hours and you smoke much less.
