Man should have been thrown out months ago, college football in particular and college sports in general have become a serious joke with all the scandals.

He knowingly covered up for his players. From a team standpoint I like this, from an NCAA standpoint he broke the rules. The way things are going in college sports it might be for the best.

Tressel was an amazing coach, and a generally great guy. I'm sad that a couple small mistakes snowballed like this.

My girlfriend is obsessed with Osu so bad that I don't want to be the one to tell her. Im hoping her family in columbus contact her. She really would fuck this guy if she could. And yes she is very crazy. I was always glad when sec teams stomped them in bowl games. Im glad he's gone so I don't have to listen to her shriek whenever the guy is shown on the sidelines

What did he do? I don't follow college sports but I feel the need to mock him regardless, or defend him to the death based on very little knowledge of the context surrounding the facts.

It's more what he didn't do.

It's really kind of strange that it's come to this point. Last year, some players were trading their OSU gear to a tattooist for tattoos. A former player emailed Tressel in April and told him, and Tressel seemingly didn't do anything. Then in the fall, he signed a NCAA statement saying he knew of no violations. The case was being investigated last year, but the players were allowed to play in the Sugar Bowl anyway, but then suspended for five games this year. Tressel was fined $250k (I think) and suspended for two, but requested a five-game suspension to match the players'. Now, he's resigned after apparently being "encouraged" to do so.

Tressel's winning record is .82xx. He's had an incredible 10-year run at OSU, with one national title and several Big 10 championships.

He had knowledge of his players selling rings, jerseys, and the like.

he also lied to the NCAA about it, and of course sent emails and texts to apparently everyone but the people he was supposed to report to

He had knowledge of his players selling rings, jerseys, and the like.

Then when the NCAA asked him about it, he signed some papers saying he had no knowledge of the event. Had he come clean then, he probably would still be coaching there.

Sadly though, the kids should be able to sell their own name for a profit. They're college kids, I'm sure they need the money.

I'm pretty sure the education etc they get free is supposed to cover their "expenses" selling shit for tattoos is hardly a neccessity. Had they sold rings for food for their mothers I'd be alot less condemning of it all.

Axhinde

Problem is that's against NCAA regulations. Meanwhile they make millions. As do the schools, broadcasting stations, a few others.

I'd say get rid of the NCAA before you get rid of a coach who didn't do anything wrong.

Axhinde

Lol. You'd be getting rid of the majority of college sports.

Just get rid of the fat piggies who make millions off these kids. Do we really need an NCAA in order to have organized sports?

Doubt it.

They're also not allowed to hold jobs. I'd say fuck it and let them sell their shit but it's a slippery slope. All of a sudden you have players getting "gifts" that they turn around and sell for cash.

I think the funniest thing is that he knowingly played ineligible players and when they were caught, he made them promise to return for their senior years in return for letting them play in the Sugar Bowl. Now he's resigning. The guy is a piece of shit.

without the ncaa the sports that arent profitabl;e, and thats all but about 5 of them would be gone, sports powers universities. Not all schools are harvards and yales that make money in bucketfulls.

Which begs the question (or at least politely asks for it) - should universities that can't stay funded any other way but sports be in existence? Isn't it only a bizarre coincidence that the sports culture in America developed such that certain universities could be funded by it?

Ardwen

I think a better question is, is it worth having these universities if for every athlete that goes and doesnt learn a thing a few hundred worthy students get educations they otherwise may not be able to acquire.

You don't think there's an overabundance of colleges in this country, considering how many people go to college in this country?

From what I've heard, Tressel was taking the fall for the higher ups at OSU. He came to them years ago after finding out about this stuff and they said to sit on it and they'd deal with it. I'm sure we'll never know the real truth.

Ardwen

Of course we'll get a version of the truth, this is the era of book deals. Everyone and their neighbor writes books about anything and everything

Rough day to be a Buckeye. Tress was a good person who ended up getting caught in a really bad place. I think the NCAA rules are ridiculous, but since they make the rules, they aren't changing anytime soon. OSU won't be the last program to get caught.

Bodog's odds for the next OSU Coach:
Meyer (3/2), Stoops (5/2), Gruden (3/1), Pelini (10/1), Dantonio (12/1)

Alfster

I can't see Meyer going there. He essentially left a program that was better than OSU. I don't see Gruden going there either.

Meyer is from Ohio and got his coaching start at OSU as a TE/WR coach. I don't think he'll come to OSU either, but there is a lot to be said about 'coming home and saving the program'.

I think Gruden will coach in the pros when he's ready to coach again, not college. I'd love to see Stoops, and I think Dantonio is a better shot than they are saying.

I would laugh my ass off if OSU stole Pelini (even though I don't like him). Nothing says welcome to the conference better than stealing your head coach...

Its already been established that assistant coach Finkle(?) will coach this year.

Until the actual NCAA penalties are determined this summer noone sane is going to express a shred of interest in the job, some of the allegations against the higher ups at the school are in all probability more serious then any big name coach is going to want to absorb. If the President of the school and the committees around him knew of some of what was supposedly happening more heads will roll.

No, but seriously, Urban Meyer is next in line at OSU.
