Anyone play this game? I saw that the sequel was coming out and figured I would play through the first game to see if it was any good. I bought and downloaded the game through Steam, but I think it is buggy. My character literally will not attack. He just runs around with his sword about his head like a moron. I tried clicking just once, holding down the button, nothing. There wasn't any sort of a tutorial, nor do I have the guide. I've read there can be a bug with the game where something like this can happen, or my mouse may be crapping out on me. Either way, at this point it is unplayable.
Suggestions?
It's been quite a while. These aren't intending to sound patronizing, but only stuff I could think of to rule out it not being just a bug/mouse issue:
1. You can still look around and such with the mouse?
2. You're using the left mouse button to attempt to attack?
3. Have you looked in settings under controls, to see what the game says for attacking/how to draw or stow your weapon/how to switch weapon styles? Maybe it's just stuck in the overhead "strong" style. Some enemies are too fast for this, and you can't hit them.
4. Were you trying to just swing the air, or were you up to an enemy where the center-dot thing turns red? I'm not sure you can just swing the air without a target. (I could be making this one up, it's been a LONG time).
I was under the impression that at the start of the game it told you BRIEFLY on the screen what the commands were, but it's not like a permanent popup like most games. If none of the above work, might want to try starting over again and looking for something like that for the initial fight where there's a bunch of guys at the castle gate (if you just stand around the guards kill them and there aren't any negative consequences- might have missed a tutorial message during that).

I'll try restarting tomorrow. I had 0 luck after about a half hour of circling a bandit and not being able to attack.

The Witcher's combat is all about rhythm. You have to click once, he strikes, then click again, he strikes, then click again. You have to do it when the targeting reticle turns into a specific shape--I can't remember which.
If you do it too quickly, you "fail" the rhythm test and Geralt doesn't do anything.

I couldn't get him to perform so much as a single attack. The resolution I play at may be the problem, as it is with other games. I am going to download the 1.5 patch, restart, switch mice, and give it another go when I get home from work.

I played witcher. There is a lot of potential, but my relatively new PC on the lowest resolution settings had problems running it...Sad, really, because I wanted to like it so much.

there were about 3 weeks where i stayed out of GS just to play this game. I absolutely loved it and have every intention of buying the second one. As for the issues you're having I can't help with that. I ran it absolutely fine on my laptop. I really hope you can get it to work because it's an awesome game.

I heard two is supposed to be a significant improvement over the original. I never played the first one but I saw someone play it when I was on ship, looked cool.

I absolutely LOVED the first one. The game mechanics aren't the greatest. Combat, like Inso stated, is rhythm based and each success moves up the chain, and breaking the rhythm means starting the chain again. Plus, it's basically rock/paper/scissors for what style you use.
Story-wise, the game kicks the everliving shit out of recent RPGs like Mass Effect and Dragon Age. It's wonderfully dark, and actually does a rather good job of tying up loose ends in the last act and the epilogue.
I got the second one the day it came out and I love it too. It's a great deal more difficult than the first (it's been rated on the same level of difficulty as Demon's Souls, though I'm unsure of that because with the exception of the first major boss fight, I haven't been outright "stuck" for more than a few tries at other fights), but the story seems to be just as dark.
Both of them are pretty known for making sure that choices you make at the beginning of the game absolutely WILL come back to haunt you, or benefit you later on. I remember in the first one, the conversation before the final battle cites specific things you said during the first act of the game, which I thought was a nice touch since it was a good buildup to a pretty satisfying ending, even if it wasn't at all a "happy" ending if you pay attention to a lot of the details.
The ambiguity of it all was what I loved the most.
But yeah, if you can get the game working properly, it's a very solid game.

Then that shit is one difficult game. I can't wait for the Demon's Souls sequel.

I personally don't think TW2 is as difficult as I've always heard that DS is. For instance, you don't have to worry about falling off shit or cheap kills due to traps (there are traps but they aren't going to kill you.)
Some of the fights are difficult. You definitely have to make liberal use of the Quen sign (magical shield basically) and the block/parry/riposte skills once you get them. The first big boss fight is rough on account of it not being very clear just what you're supposed to do, since it's not a simple run up and beat the hell out of it fight. It involved the use of the Yrden sign (magical trap), and I never remember needing to use that one in the first game.
