With the events going on in Wehnimer's, there is more CvC going on than is typical, in large part because the Ta'Mori has been developed. So I expect some of it, and that's all fine and good. But if you're going to engage in it, take your medicine like a man.

First time Dhairn comes to my attention, as a large crowd is gathered at the north gate, talking to one of the Tehir visitors, (all logs edited only to remove all the unrelated crap):

Shannivar points at Dhairn.

Shannivar says, "That's who Demyse and Maetriks are hiding behind tonight, by the way."

Strydyr fades into view.
Strydyr looks determined and focused.
In an awe inspiring display of combat mastery, Strydyr engages Dhairn in a furious dance macabre, spiralling into a blur of strikes and ripostes!
Strydyr swings a crimson drakar maul at Dhairn!

A clean miss.
The guiding force leaves Strydyr.

Dhairn drops all defense as he moves into a battle-ready stance.

Strydyr sighs.

Dhairn drops all defense as he moves into a battle-ready stance.
Demyse traces a sign while petitioning the spirits for cognition...
Demyse gestures.
Demyse attempts to create a sanctuary but the chaotic nature of a sooty grey flame-eyed grantris interferes with his attempt.
Dhairn looks determined and focused.

Dhairn says, "Take care."
Raokh glances at Dhairn.
The ghostly voice of Strydyr says, "You'll get yours..."

Dhairn moves into a defensive stance, ready to fend off an attack.

So I figure fair is fair. Strydyr tries to kill him and fails and pays the price. No one else in the room attacked Dhairn either at that point. It was early in the night and I think people really wanted to get involved in the story rather than some tit for tat distraction.

Then this happens a little later, also at the north gate. Metadi kills one of the Ta'Mori, etc:

The sense of peace and security passes away from the area.

Metadi swings a perfect rolaren-capped sledgehammer at Demyse!

** As Dhairn's cold steel lance hits, a surge of power flows out of it, through Dhairn, and leaps out at Metadi! **
Dhairn's eyes glow with silvery grey light, and a pillar of argentine radiance manifests around Metadi.

Dhairn returns to normal color.
Dhairn appears less battle-ready as a soft glow dissipates from around his form.

* Dhairn just bit the dust!

Classic our guy kills your guy, your guy kills our guy, our guy kills your guy. Again, fair enough. If you're going to insert yourself in a story in that way, you have to expect to die now and again. This goes for either side.

Then this starts to happen. More at the north gate. Fail #1:

Dhairn just faded into view.
Dhairn thrusts with a silver-inlaid cold steel lance at you!
You skillfully interpose your shield between yourself and the attack!

Dhairn just went east.

You chuckle.

Hmm, lets try something else, again at the north gate in front of a bunch of folks. Fail #2:

Dhairn is trying to drag you. If you want to prevent this type "GROUP CLOSE".
Something grabs you and drags you northwest.
[Wehnimer's, Exterior]
You can no longer see the land gates of Wehnimer's from this dirt path, although you can still hear the din of the town on the other side of the wooden palisades. To the west and southwest lies the untamed land that surrounds Wehnimer's Landing. To the west, the large wooden fence in front of the Wehnimer's Jousting Arena fills your view.

Roundtime: 4 sec.

(I exit nw and 10 seconds later the game crashes)

So that's all good and in a fair sense of sport, except that this is supposed to be a story line rather than some personal vendeta, but whatever. Then this happens: you try to kill me three times, you shouldn't expect to be able to walk into a room without some repurcussions. Again at the north gate:

Dhairn just arrived.
Speaking to Mitokht, Dhairn says, "You should keep a leash on that wolf..."

A stray breeze trails through from the north, carrying with it the scent of lavender and, oddly, grilled rolton. Though many might ponder this strange combination of fragrances, the truly remarkable aspect of this quiet path lies in the regal beauty of the ancient trees whose branches reach out overhead, offering welcome to all who pass. You also see a roped-off clearing and a grey stone walkway.

Brinn says, "Enough said."

You say, "Tried to kill me multiple times earlier."

Kilthal softly says, "Killed Metadi earlier."
Kilthal softly says, "And attempted to kill Kerl."

About a minute passes while we wait for him to log back in. I was going to interact a little till he logged out, but if that's how it's going to be I'm going to finish the job and you can roleplay a slamming SOB. So what do you suppose he was waiting for before logging back in? Watch and see:

It seems you have died, my friend. Although you cannot do anything, you are keenly aware of what is going on around you...

You mentally give a sigh of relief as you remember that the Goddess Lorminstra owes you a favor.

...departing in 14 mins...

I can just imagine what the discussion on whatever back channel you were using was like while you were logged out: "hep me hep me, they gonna kill me!" Slamming to avoid a conflict is weak, and slamming and waiting till your buddy can get in position before logging back in is pathetic. At least you had the dignity to not ask him to come and attack BEFORE you logged back in. Or maybe he was the one with too much dignity to stoop to that.

At this point I'll offer you a small olive branch: there's a story going on here, not an excuse to go ape shit PvP. If you want to be a part of the story and want to play the dark side fine, but don't decide you need to stalk me all over Elanthia in some misguided revenge effort, and then log off when you get caught with your pants around your ankles.

When you consider how trivial death is, it really shows a craven/cowardly mindset. I'd also say a name like Draith and Dhairn that he was MAing here on his secondary. Atleast he did come back into the game when he brought in the other guy as a minor caveat like Kerl pointed out.

As an aside. I wish I had my weapon out when I engaged him. Metadi certainly destroyed Demyse though. Lol. He had been egging us on for hours.

If he did bring an alt in with Draithe, it's grounds for a PvP warning. Jeez. Take the leash off Prime for 30 seconds and people go crazy.

Draithe is his character, as far as I've ever been able to tell. They MA hunt together all the time on Teras in Nelemar. I don't know this without a doubt. However, I've never seen them hunting apart. All I'll add is that as soon as I read your log there, I was calling it PvP abuse. Getting involved in what is right or wrong about all the supposed CvC currently, in this storyline, is not my agenda. I've seen some idiot moves lately. Slamming is certainly not good. PvP is worse.

As far as me logging off that was completely unintentional. I'm not afraid to take my hits. Hence why I came back and let ya'll kill me. If I hadn't jacked up I most likely could have gotten away beseeching and ringing. My bust shit happens. Wasn't supposed to be anything shady, no hey I'm in this room come sanct or drag me out soon as I'm back. More like shit, I'm about to die, just come snag me after. Anyhow continue the debate as you wish. Just lettin' you know the deal.

To clarify one thing. I didn't attack him unprovoked to begin with.

He killed Strydyr about 15 minutes earlier in town as I was toying with Demyse who I managed to catch and stun in town. Dhairn suddenly popped out of invisibility without a word and killed Strydyr.

Poor RP? Sure. Valid CvC? Sure, since it was apparent he was defending Demyse in character and I had initiated an attack on Demyse.

So, I tried to get revenge later at the North Gate and as you can see, failed in grand fashion. heh. That was fine, it was entertaining CvC at that point and I got my ass handed to me.

When it went sour was when you brought in Draithe. (Which I noticed you left out of your perspective.)

Even if we give you the benefit of the doubt and say the slam was an accident, bringing in Draithe for revenge on Kerl crossed the boundary into inappropriate PvP.

It's pretty simple. Play by the same rules as everyone else if you're going to take a side and get involved with CvC. That way it stays fun, and a game and not a grudge match.

Yea, just to clarify again for people, Dhairn and Draithe are two different people. We are actual brothers, however we do both play each others accounts.

I wasn't gonna say shit, but my boy owned up here. I was climbing in Yosemite all last week and this weekend so it wasn't me that did that. Seems like I have some catching up to do with wtf is going on...

We are also brothers in game, so going forward if we are together and you do attack Dhairn in front of Draithe, it would be very IN character for him to blast the shit out of you first and ask questions later. They are both very loyal to each other in game, and Draithe is likely to back Dhairn even in the wrong.

That being said, I am not remotely interested in running around invisible imploding people or any such random killing, KOS killing or whatever. Hopefully if I become involved or not it will be in an IC way, I will not be torching anyone due to what I read here or anything. So if you do attack me out of invis or something, I'll likely have no effing clue why.

Well, props for owning it and here's hoping future interactions are better.

I was/am having a good time with the story and having a scary ass enemy around somewhere makes things interesting.

Also, does rolling a negative 81 on a feint really count toward my helping with that kill? If that's the kind of luck I keep getting the score will remain 2 Dhairn, 0 Strydyr :( I may have to live with that.

Just understand that your brother decided to start killing people to defend some outlaws of Wehnimer's Landing and that's why people are attacking him. He took a side in a story and defending him via CvC him would immediately involve you in the same story.

If you do decide to join in and defend your brother, just be sure you make it clear in game that you plan to defend him. Posting here doesn't count and if someone complained against you for defending your brother you'd have nothing to stand on and they'd call it nonconsentual CvC. Yay.

I only say this because I see the potential for this to turn into a great big clusterfuck of stupidity instead of being a fun occassional RP/CvC spar here and there while we all enjoy this awesome storyline and invasion.

Totally agree, occasional RP/CvC fun, wanton killing of people everywhere no fun. Draithe, when played by me anyhow, is a way more likely to try and disable and talk first than go for 717/719/720. I'm almost 100% sure that implosion was Draithe's first intentional kill of another char (outside of Droughtmans) and I've (we've) been playing him for about 4 years now.

The old policy was that jumping in to kill someone in defense of someone else was a no go. I think it was Andraste who really blasted that all over the place. I don't know if it is any different now or if it is different for this invasion. If someone gets scolded for it, can you ensure you post about it? I'm just interested in knowing.

If someone attacks a friend of mine or a member of my party, I'm going to act, end of story. How this could be viewed as ooc is beyond me. If you're walking down the street and someone punches your friend, are you supposed to just stand there and gawk?

Eoghain
05-24-2011, 06:20 PM
Yeah, I'd like to know about that too since Eoghain will kill anyone that attacks a Dhe'nar in front of him. I imagine it only really comes up if the victim of your defense warns or reports you though...

Stry

Technically, I could have complained/reported/assisted when Dhairn killed me the first time as I was attacking Demyse in town. I've never interacted with Dhairn prior to that moment. Storyline aside, that was a violation of current policy by the letter of the law. What a GM would do about said assist, I'm not sure and likely varies case to case based on the person's history.

I didn't/wouldn't complain because I think this can be abused (and is all to often) and I didn't view Dhairn's attack as excessive as I was already picking on Demyse, a character many levels lower than Strydyr.

In a perfect world Dhairn should have still said something like "I wouldn't do that if I were you." or "Leave Demyse alone or you'll have to deal with me." If I then decided to attack Demyse anyway then his attack would have been much more validated and within policy.

Granted, what happened lasted all of about 5 seconds and with the storyline, I was willing to play along and tried to get revenge.

I know it doesn't make sense at all. It was probably just an Andraste thing. She never really seemed to understand a difference between CvC and PvP.

That's what I thought at first too but after thinking about it for a while I guess the policy sort of makes sense. If you can attack anyone because they attacked someone else then where will it end? Player A kills player B, friend of player B kills player A, friend of player A kills friend of player B and so on and so forth.

I think such a policy makes sense if both players are of equal or similar level since it stands to reason that both players can take care of themselves. If a level 90 kills a level 10 though I don't see why another level 90 can't jump in.

I can see it as being OOC, and likely the original reason for the policy, if you kill my level 10 character with your level 10 character and then I log on my capped character and hunt you down.

That's a different story- you logged in a character who wasn't there to begin with.

Even if you're MA'ing- If my capped character is walking around with my lvl 10, and someone kills my lvl 10, my capped character is going to react. That's IC. Just because I'm controlling both shouldn't make any difference to the IC element.

Stry

I agree.

The whole point of the policy is to make sure there's some interaction rather than people just wandering around GS slaughtering one another. It's a RP game, and RP should be involved.

If you're in a group and someone kills your friend, it certainly is reasonable and IC to attack them. They initiated it and by doing so consented to CvC. The same for Eoghain's case in my opinion, within reason of course. Eoghain can't go around assuming everyone knows the intentions of his character's heart.

The thing is, if everyone followed the policy you wouldn't have people randomly killing one another without some kind of appropriate interaction.

In Dhairn's case. He was invisible. I had no idea he was there. I had spent time around Demyse's group before and never seen him before or spoken to him. In my mind, by the letter of the policy he should have done a bit more than just kill me for stunning Demyse and run off with him. That's why I could have complained, but I didn't.

I hope that makes sense.

Yea I could have handled that first encounter better as well. I didn't want to be seen with the group too early until I wanted my affiliation known. When you just came in and stunned I kind of just reacted. Wasn't sure of your intent so I went for the kill. Appreciate you not taking it too seriously. Was more or less just showing them I was down for the cause.

Sometimes you have to let your friends fight their own fights. Other times it's OK to jump in. Where to draw the line is probably kind of flexible, and undoubtedly depends on whether or not someone complains, as well as how often you jump into a fight that isn't your fight to begin with.

As an example, Eoghain, as part of this storyline is probably going to be OK jumping in to defend the Ta'Mori. But if you continue to simply attack anyone who attacks a deh'nar simply because because they're deh'nar, you're eventually going to run afoul of the PvP rules. The difference is really that in the one case it makes sense within the realm of a story, in the other case, it doesn't. If you're the only one who's marching to the drum of your personal, single-minded story and that story means "I must kill anyone who kills a deh'nar" you're going to have trouble justifying that down the road.

As for Dhairn logging in his brother's account and running over to where he was about to get pummeled as soon as he logged back in, and then revenge killing Kerl with a character on a different account, that's a pretty clear PvP/mechanics violation. I'm not going to complain about it, because I think it was just a heat of the moment thing, and I prefer to not go there anyway. That said, it doesn't jive with the PM you sent me Dhairn. In the PM you said you asked him to come and rescue you afterwards and there was some miscommunication, and now you're saying YOU logged him in and he wasn't even in town at the time and it was a revenge killing? The way it looks now, the PM'd explanation was a lie, but now that your brother has posted he was out of town you've had to come clean? Does that about sum it up?

Do it again and your bro will be the one asking you why he's been locked out.

Wasn't supposed to be anything shady, no hey I'm in this room come sanct or drag me out soon as I'm back. More like shit, I'm about to die, just come snag me after. Anyhow continue the debate as you wish. Just lettin' you know the deal.
