Bleh, forgot to say it's on NBC.

It's held on thailand to boost their tourism after tsunami.

Or they are hoping to remove all the universe's most beautiful people in one fell swoop!

In fairness, this is better than the Bachelour or Bachelorette. For one thing, this is a way for countries to boost their tourism especially third world countries. Thailand for example needed this bad. I know people think pageants are superficial, but these women can win scholarships, and many oppurtunities like being goodwill ambassadors all over the world. They also participate and contribute to various charities. It's no different if not better than pop princesses who sing, but use sex to sell their records.

Shalla, read that and tell me you think they're all intelligent.

Anyhow, I watch pagents and shit like that on tv for eye candy, as well as to laugh at how stupid the particpants are.

Generalizing is also stupid.

:?: How did you reach the conclusion that only attention whores watch it...?

That said, I was sorely disappointed by the representatives of the Orient.

I believe you also forgot I said pop princesses "who" uses sex to sell their records. Obviously, those who uses sex to sell their records are the ones I was refering to, and those Who do NOT are not included. I believe you also forgot to read your previous post generalizing all pageant participants.

Shalla, read that and tell me you think they're all intelligent.

I took the liberty of posting it.

Hehee. Although Ms. Universe isn't a widely watched show in Canada, it is mostly in third world countries. It really does help their economy, through tourism. It's a way for them to get their country noticed without spending millions of dollars, for example to fund the olympics. The Philippines for example, got an increase in tourism when it was held there, and it helped the economy alot, simply because it's all they have. Foreign money pouring in helps tremendously. Ms. Universe is watched and almost a national event, when Philippines won 1st runner up a couple of years ago, she was treated like a hero. It's considered being patriotic because their resources are very limited, ones we take for granted because our countries are abundant with it.

As for superficiality, some participants do take it to the limit, by going through surgery, but it would be unfair to generalize. There are lots of oppurtunities, because they are exposed to both social and political standings, some organizations give scholarships and prize money which will help them financially.. and no they are not all stupid. The reason Ms. Venezuala lost is because she croaked in her answer, and Ms. Puerto rico also wasn't convincing. You can just imagine the pressure of being asked on the spot. Trust me, it's easier to come up with an answer at home. I don't know why it's not okay to have these kind of events, but the school system letting football players or hockey players pass without actually studying and taking exams simply so they could go state is A-okay. At least these pageants contribute to various organizations.

Beauty does not necessarily equate lacking intelligence. The same way for brawn. Beauty does not necessarily mean they are attention whores. It's very hypocritical to judge for that.

Believe it or not, these events do have benefits. They are contributors, it's not always shallow. These shows are watched by millions. Beauty does attract, why shouldn't it? Why wouldn't it attract? It's foolish to underestimate someone just because they are beautiful. I'm not saying there are no consequences to glorifying on beauty on today's youth, but that has been happening even way before pageants were started. Who wants to be ugly? Which of us have never thought someone is a freak just because of the way they look? It's hypocritical, and that itself is stupid.

Personally, I have no problem with these pageants being held. I just choose to not watch them as they do nothing but lead me to compare myself to an ideal I cannot attain. I then console myself with a pint of Ben & Jerry's Phish Food. It is not a pretty sight.

If this affects your self worth, then by all means don't watch it. But it shouldn't. We are surrounded by mainstream media and we are presented of what the world, the world we are a part of as ideal beauty. We the masses put these people on the pedestal, it wouldn't affect our self esteem much if we don't think so ourselves these people are beautiful. Like someone said here, it's good eye candy. It looks good, it's beautiful.

It wouldn't affect our self esteem, if we ourselves think that as the ideal beauty. Why would we think them beautiful and blame them for how it affects us?

There are beautiful people in the world, but the whole world does not necessarily think they are beautiful. It is up to us, if we are going to let our self worth on other people's hands. Superficial beauty is not the only kind of beauty in the world. Someone so beautiful could have the ugliest personality and it could turn someone off completely. There is beauty in all of us, please please don't put your self worth on other people's hands. Some people are into it, and it doesn't necessarily mean we have to do it too.

I don't mean to blame them for it at all - I know it is my issue. I choose not to watch it because I know it will lead to me berating myself.

I just personally find any type of Pagents boring (including dog shows) It isn't about my self esteem or anything other then pure boredom. If I want to see hot lady's parade in skimpy clothing I am SURE I can find something on Cable that will suit my fancy and include some type of explosions. Preferably with Angelina Jolie.

If the pagents had more live action like Car chases and duels to the death I would be so there! I never did like talent shows.

I hate how they parade the women around like they are prized cows.

Really, I do.

This thread reminds me of the Nosferatu that hated the pretty actress in Vampire: The Masquerade computer game.
