Nicely done, but the hand on the shoulder is kinda freaky. the arm looks like it is going round to the opposite shoulder and the hand itself looks to be a ghost hand, all on it's lonesome.

Divone, if you want to toss the one of Shannivar up into your original post too as another example, go for it. Otherwise I'll just post it down here further in the thread.

Actually, in working with Divone, we found that finding outfits that didn't show some skin or boobs to be a problem. It was important that Misun wasn't misrepresented and I think she did a great job at getting her just right. Very detailed in the expression and everything else. I highly recommend her if you want to get a portrait done.

There have been some changes to my pricing and packages. (still working out bugs)

Bad news:
I can't offer the group packages due to computer troubles. I can't fit that many people into a portrait or scene without bad things happening. I hope to remedy the situation by fall, so stay tuned. I might be able to squeeze four people by making two a background then posing two more but scenes with more than two people cannot be done. Sorry for the inconvience.
My couple packages have gone up slightly due to the amount of work involved.

Good news!
I am now accepting silvers as payment! Yay! It's roughly in the exchange of 7/per.

Thank you all for your support and patience. Keep those commissions coming!

Aftering setting the people up one by one and setting them as a background...I came up with a scene for the Landing invasion! I stole a trick from DAZ and tilted the picture a bit for fun.

I imagine digital artwork takes a lot of work. Though for an invasion scene maybe a panned out view with a lot of critter invading instead of one. Could make them smaller so less detail involved? I'm not very artistic, so I could just not know what I'm talking about.

Yeah I thought it best to.
I was saying how I was tired of this kind of digital art everyone seems to be throwing up onto the boards, how everything looks like lifeless dolls but didn't think it was fair to the OP since it wasn't directed at her.
So much for that. NICE GOING!!!

Your comment about this same thing in reply to a portrait I'd done a while back was kind enough to keep me from bothering to do any more digital art. So, thanks, I guess?

05-27-2011, 11:48 AM
Digital art takes a lot of work, and they can be made to look quite lifelike with work, and patience.

The only way to get to that end is to keep practicing, so I encourage anyone that has worked on digital art to keep it up. It is as much a skill as drawing, and takes the same dedication.

Asha
05-27-2011, 12:09 PM
Let me make it clear that I said I was getting tired of this kind of program and not that I dislike it.
There's nothing anyone can do to make the characters look as real or original as say Vectored art using Illustrator or actual pen / pencil and paper and I appreciate anyone's attempts and efforts in the way Divone and Laph have posted.
It's just ALL there seems to be lately.

Divone
05-27-2011, 12:19 PM
Yes, there is a ton of digital art. It's a bright shiny new toy to play with. It's no where near as good as some of the hand draw/painted art. I completely agree. Does it take patience to make it look half believable? Yes it does. I suck at drawing people and I am tickled pink to have a medium to circumvent that. Drayal, I have a thick skin. Some people like what I do, but I don't expect everyone to. Opinions are always welcome.

Axehind- I wish I had the computer to add a mass of invaders and defenders. Unfortunately due to RAM problems, I can't add more that two people to a scene without bad things happening. I can "layer" a work by rendering something then making it a background for two more posed. It starts to look really contrived after awhile. My GIMP skills lack in making those added folks look seamless. So I work with what I have!

That being said......EVERYONE GET A PORTRAIT! I love doing portraits. It makes me happy. :)

Misun
05-27-2011, 12:29 PM
I love what you're doing and as you said, not everyone is going to like it. As far as getting a portrait of your character, this is all that has been offered pretty much lately. Personally, I like how well Divone is doing and that she's really enjoying it. She's great to work with. If someone else steps up with another option, I would probably do that as well. What I would want right now is some cartoon stuff for laughs.

Not enough buxom on that female dwarven warrior. Another 40 lbs about?... The mustache is missing too.

Don't take it personally, it's hard to do female dwarves that don't look like a hermaphrodite with an eating disorder. If that was a portrait I'm sure you pegged the player's description of what they wanted, but it just ain't a dwarf without some frump and fuzz.

And yeah, I'm trying to talk myself into getting a couple. Ever tried experimenting with transparent textures to keep everything from looking so shiny and new? I can point you to a few guides if not. Used to try doing this for a while, but my people always come out looking possessed. I can't do body structure at all. What software are you using?

First I would like to thank everyone for their continued support of my artwork. Without these commissions, I don't think I would have grown as a digital artist. With every portrait, I develop a deeper understanding of the 3d world.

Now that I have dove into the world of displacement maps, bump maps and texturing, I spend can spend 3-6 hours on a single picture. It can be a slow and meticulous process. Increasing knowledge of the medium seems to equal an increased time spent working. This time does not include research time for props and models.

Due to time spent and the increase in expenses (models!), I will be restructuring my rates and packages as of November 1. Current packages will no longer be available as they are now. New packages and rates will be as follows: (all funds in usd)

Single character - $30 (4 million silver)
This package will contain a 1 scene involving your character and 1 close up "snapshot" of your characters face. The scene will be much like the ones I have been doing but the snap shot will be a much simpler version of the portrait.

Couples Package- $50 (7 million)
This package will contain a 1 scene with your characters and 2 "snapshots" of the characters faces (one each).

Additional scenes ( those who wish to extend the packages above or add to the those they already have)
$15 for new scene and outfit.

I will not charge extra for the addition of a familiar or companion provided that I have the model.

Group portraits up to five characters will be available again. The price will be determined by the size of the group and how complex the picture is. Price negotiations! Fun!

I know this seems like a steep hike in the rates but I was caught unprepared with how much work each character would be and the costs of purchasing new models.

Every month I will be holding a contest (trivia, games etc) in game for a free Single Character package. Keep an eye out on the boards, here and at play.net, for the first one!

It's just ALL there seems to be lately.

Kind of late on this one but.... she is charging practically nothing for these. Are they hand drawn realistic pictures? No. Are they awesome, fun character portraits? Absolutely. These are perfect for people who otherwise never would have gotten one because of the high prices of custom art. They are well done, she really works with you to get exactly what you want, and it was just a fun process. They are something I never in a billion years would have been able to do on my own. I love them and I'll probably get one for a couple more of my characters. Just wanted to put that out there.

Another VERY satisfied customer.

If anyone has ever considered this but is hesitant because of the difficulty of trying to get your ideas across to an artist, or a variety of other reasons, Divone was an absolute pleasure to work with and you should give her a try!

Nice work!

Looks like your using Poser for the characters, makes sense because creating characters from scratch is EXTREMELY time consuming.

My first major was 3d Animation, some of my work has even been featured in the movie Troy. So I know exactly how hard time consuming this can all be.

I would suggest working on your bump mapping. Almost every texture should have some kind of bump mapping. How many smooth surfaces are there in anything, not even glass is entirely smooth.

Furthermore, adding a little chaos would go a long way. All your pieces are too perfect. The difference between a good 3d artist and a great 3d artist is the amount and quality of chaos in the scene. For example, a smudge of dirt on someones hand, a tiny rip in a shirt, hell even a chip in the marble.

I don't mean to sound harsh, but I spent a long time studying this and just trying to give you some constructive critism. You've got lots of potential, and its a hard craft. Keep working at it.

Cheers!

1. Troy has never been a relevant movie with regard to animation.

2. If that's your claim to fame, stop claiming it.

3. It was like ten years ago, guy. STOP.

4. Elanthia is perfect. Where would you expect to find chipped marble or saggy tits? Get over yourself, and use your Master's degree to help Somali children or something like everyone else your age tends to.

4. Elanthia is perfect. Where would you expect to find chipped marble or saggy tits?

Perfectly ugly maybe.

You see Vivaldi the Farmer.
He appears to be a Half-Sylvan.
He is taller than average and appears to be stooped with age. He has weary heather blue eyes and coarse, sun-spotted skin. He has short, slovenly wheat white hair dappled with dusty grey. He has a broken nose and several greying, wiry nose hairs sticking out at odd angles. He has a worn and weathered face deeply lined with wrinkles. He has gnarled and abused hands that display a plethora of callouses, which are typically associated with hard labor, while the backs of his hands are pock-marked with liverspots and dimpled with wrinkles.

Hotsauce - I have been working with bumping and displacement. I went into this a complete novice and finally just got a computer that can keep up with the technology. I'm a sucker for lighting. I've been combing through youtube and other sources for lighting techniques. I don't have the time I wish I had to devote to learning the fine details but I am aware of the potential of the program and I have barely scratched the surface. Thanks for the advice. I'm getting there!

Tisket - You know, I really should give the description with each character. Right now the pictures on my site will only have descriptions if you hover over it and that doesn't even work half the time. I am looking for a new site but I am restricted to those that offer cookie cutter web pages and are free.

Hey Divone, did you end up buying the DAZ software? I see they have a free 30 day trial but not where it's free after that. I've been playing with it some but a lot of the artwork can get a bit pricey if you have to buy it. There is also a pretty steep learning curve in mastering the controls. I'm going to have to bite the bullet and actually watch the tutorials instead of just using trial and error I guess. And while I have no interest in doing commissions like you do so well, I might play with trying to match a random description of a GS player from the "What are you wearing" thread just for kicks.

Anyway, I realize after playing with it today, what a fine job you do with it. Kudos.

DAZ Studio 4 Pro is free right now. It has some awesome features like a bridge to Photoshop and autofit. There are a few sites that have free models but you do have to dig. Renderosity has a great variety of free stuff and Most digital creations as well. I've been building my library for about two years now and it can get pricey. I mostly keep an eye out of sales, free stuff etc. Most outfits I buy are very flexible and with new textures, look brand new. If you ever have a question, give me a poke on AIM. You said it! I can't seem to stop playing with it. I don't have AIM but I might have to get it just to bug you with questions. Here's one: is the rendering supposed to take so freaking long? I chose the best quality, came back an hour later, and it was only at 4%. Crazy long time for 4% but maybe that's normal?

I don't know, it was my first try at rendering so maybe the program glitched? I'm going to go with user error, lol. Also, I'm using the 64 bit version, not the 32, don't know if that's why or if that has to do with it at all.

Okay, it was me and not the program. I'm certainly not surprised.

Here's the random description I picked up in the "What are you wearing" folder. I have no idea if the person plays anymore but she's who I picked as a guinea pig:

You see Lady Merelle Hart Nalfein. She appears to be an Elf.
She is tall and appears to be young. She has copper-suffused sandalwood eyes and silky smooth, lightly sunkissed skin. She has hip-length, soft flaxen blonde hair plaited into a simple braid and secured with a simple leather hair-tie. She has a delicate face, a straight nose and thin-tipped pointed ears. Her left cheek has been marred by a series of fine silver scars.
She has some spiraling golden rings set along the slender tips of her pointed ears, and a twisting vine and leaf tattoo on her arm.
She is in good shape.
She is holding a full-bodied red claret in her right hand.
She is wearing a long-chained gold owl pendant with black glaes eyes, a split-tailed longcoat of burnt orange and gold silk brocade, and a stiff black suede corset over a fine white cotton shirt with over-the-hand lace cuffs, a diamond-inset wedding ring, a pair of narrow black suede pants side-slashed from the calf down, and some low-heeled black suede boots.

petiteSylvan- I have heard of such things but I'm all goody goody when it comes to that. Especially since I use the program for some commercial use. I would never stop the sharing though. ;)

Tisket - It's tiny but it's awesome! You might have the render setting on teensy. One great tip is learning to use the surfaces tab. Click surfaces/rendering tab. Click on something in the picture like a shirt. You'll see it and all it's little pieces pop up depending on how complex the texture is. For now just Click the whole thing. Scroll down in the surfaces tab to lighting model and chose matte from the drop down menu. Voila. Everything loses that plastic sheen. Sometimes you will need that sheen for metal and the like but I usually go matte for most materials.

Have I completely confused you yet? There are soooooooooo many awesome things to share!

I vote Tisket take on Vivaldi! Set morphs to craggly in a thong!

I have sorta finished the features but the lighting sucks and I haven't got a background yet. Also need to tweak the hair and get a suitable wardrobe and background downloaded. If thefarmer wants to post it though that'd be fine. He's being a butthead and sending me pms of freaky clowns. I'm going to put Vivaldi in a dress if he doesn't stop.

Okay, here's the latest rough version of you that needs new lighting and a background. Tweaks to the hair and clothes are next.

You know, the creepiest TRUE things about that cover are: 1) it is the cover to a romance/erotica "novel"; 2) it was written by a man (for what market? Secret Pennywise fetishist? John Wayne Gacy fanfic? "Hey, baby, come see my deadlights..."); and 3) the actual name of the romance novel is "The Hungry Ones".

Not sure how to post the full picture instead of just a thumbnail so....click on it. Finally submitted a request to Divone for my warrior and here he is along with a clip of his text self.

You see Vehir the Raider.
He appears to be a Half-Krolvin.
He is tall and appears to be past his prime. He has brooding silver-blue eyes and chalky, densely-corded skin. He has closely-cropped, matted rhimar-hued hair. He has a beak-like nose and a healthy growth of bristly stubble covering most of his face.
He has a series of tattooed tally marks on his neck, an expansive tattoo of overlapping coins down the length of his arm on his arm, a grey-outlined frigate tattoo on his arm, a coil of grey yew leaves on his wrist, an armored ribcage tattoo on his chest, an armored spinal column tattoo on his back, and a grid-like pattern tattooed on his leg.

As I learn and grow with the character portraits, so does my time invested in each one. Due to this, I've had to readjust my pricing. Thank you all for the time we have spent working on your characters! I do love it.

Character Portrait - $35 This is a simple waist-up shot of your character with a simple background. (I will give you a choice of backgrounds to
to choose from.)

Character Scene -$45 Your character doing something much more interesting than posing for a portrait. Hunting, drinking, swinging from a tree!
One picture but with much more going on.

Single Character Scene/Portrait -$70 You'll get a simple waist-up and a full scene. Portrait and scene can have different outfits. (Example- finer
dress in portrait and hunting gear in scene.)

Couple Portrait -$65 Waist-up of couple sitting for portrait with a simple background.

Couple Scene - $75 Full scene with the couple. Please see note below.

Couple Scene/Portrait -$110 You'll have the simple waist up portrait of them plus the full scene.

Additional scenes - $20 This is for those that already have a character made. I will change the outfit and set them up in a new scene. If we have to
completely rework the character (ie change hair, skin and some features), I will charge $35. This is per character.

For large groups, I will negotiate the price as the complexitity of the scene dictates. Don't worry, I give AWESOME deals to group scenes. I accept payment in the form of paypal, Gift of Adventure or in silvers (7/mil).

*Please keep in mind, I do not do nudity. Sexy, suggestive and a little bit daring, I'm in! No naughty bits showing.

I love working on your characters but sometimes we have a hard time getting to the image that captures what makes them special. I'm willing to do as many edits as possible to get there but we have to be reasonable. I sometimes put 20 hours into one picture including research, render time, photoshop time and editing. There will be a certain point where we need to renegotiate on the price.

So! A few people already know this but I thought I would make it public. Over the last month, the computer I have my DAZ things on had a melt down. I had everything backed up on disks but the one containing all my portrait stuff, was damaged. I waited on the edge of seat for two weeks praying it was just a windows problem but it turned out it was my hard drive. The good news is I have everything up to a year ago on a old computer and I have been transfering that slowly to my new one. Most of the things I purchased are still available on the sites I purchased them except for a few important morph packages (these morphs are what I need to customize the characters) that I need to buy again due to exceeding the download limits already.

English! I'm slowly getting back on my digital feet but I'm not quite there yet. I won't be doing portraits for a few more weeks at best.

The bad bad news. I lost the saved models for the people I have done work for over the last year. I'm very sorry. I still have the final renders on my site but not the models themselves. If we ever work together again, I will only charge you for redos though we'll have to start from scratch.

Thank you everyone for the support and work over the last few years. Doing these portraits have been a joy and I miss it. I hope to be back in business soon. Until then, I know a few others that are taking up the torch ;).

Balls. I had this happen waaay back in like 2002 with my entrance portfolio for college, except my broke ass didn't have any backups. It forced me to redo most of my portfolio on physical media rather than just about 50% of it, which was a better idea anyway.

The neat thing about redoing everything though is that the second time around, you're coming back with a lot more knowledge and skill under your umbrella and know exactly what you're trying to do, so hey- they'll look even more awesome. POSITIVES!

Ack, I hope replacing the morphs and other data isn't to horrible. Best of luck getting back up to speed & let us know if we can help somehow!

I know your pain as well; UPS destroyed the computer I custom-built shipping/using it for soccer practice across the country in 2010 (yup, I totally cried), and my last laptop completely shit the bed when I had the temerity to ask it to handle a 5.1 surround system with an external sound card one day (although it had had no previous problems doing that very thing for a whole year).

Tisket

Divone, I found out that you can reset your downloads at DAZ as many times as you want so you do NOT have to repurchase anything that says your downloads have expired. Go to your account page and click on "Downloadable Products" then choose the items you don't have on your computer and click reset download. It will reset the downloads and move it to the top of the queue for you. It's slow if you have a lot of products because you have to do each individually but it's better than repurchasing content you already own. I found out because it kept crashing when I was trying to download something and I used up all my available downloads. I complained to DAZ and they walked me through the reset process.
