OK, I have played this game waaaaaay to much over the past week. It is crazy addicting. Free to play RTS with microtransactions galore for customization of the tanks beyond the initial loadout (although I'd say 2/3rds of the customizations simply require in-game effort to acheive instead of cash, but you can spend to get it faster)

Only complaint is that you can't game with more than two of your friends in a platoon.

Anyone else playing?

I am going to try this out, but when I go to register the bow of random letters and the area to type them in to stop bots from joining does not appear. Any way around doing that part?

Edit: So I got it working, just had to refresh a few times... any pointers on upgrading or tanks you like?

I don't have anything above a tier 5 so that's about the extent of my experience.

I'm a big proponent of the Leopard on the dead end section of the German medium tree. There are so many big tanks out there it is nice to be the one in the speedy small tank with medium tank armor able to spot and run (and actually do some good damage with the 5cm gun). Only downside is that it is classified as a "scout tank" so be prepared to get sucked into battles with lots of big tanks that you won't be able to do much other than engine shots to.

I just got my M4 Sherman (US medium tree offshoot) and have been extremely happy with it (especially after the BRUTAL grind on the M3 Lee, one of the most difficult tanks to use, IMHO) and even have used the 105mm gun occasionally to take out Tier 7 and 8s. It is high profile so you will get spotted easily and the turret upgrade actually lowers the armor so watch out for that.

For Russian tanks, I've been using an SU-85B for a few battles now and I'm not a big fan of it, but I've been told that the higher up TDs are serious business once you get out of the open topped ones. Their low profile and high armor can keep you alive when up against the IS series and the other heavy tanks. Most of the people I play with use the German Hetzer because of these advantages too.

I am working on the US tree and about to get the M3 here in another match or two, and wow am I having a hard time. I don't know if there is a substantial learning curve or if the type of tank you are using really matters, but I am hoping that the tank is a big part.

The lower tier tanks are quite hard, although I had pretty good time with the M2 medium tank with the upgraded engines and the shortbarrel 76mm. The key is using the strategies that work with a particular tank. Check the wiki page for help on that: http://wiki.worldoftanks.com/Main_Page

You will have horrible, horrible problems with the M3 if your teammates don't try to help you with scouting and backing you up, let me warn you right now. It has bad armor, no turret (you have to point the tank towards your target like a TD), and it gets thrown into battles with heavy tanks it rarely can do much with.

I've got a clan of about 15 guys that I play with regularly and that really enhances the amount of fun you can have (we've had 9 guys get in on the same side before, which when you have little fast tanks like BT7s and Leopards can be an absolute riot).

We've also played the strategic clan wars thing where you fight other clans for territory (and gold income every day until someone takes that territory away) that adds another cool dimension too.

I'm Svalsbard in game if you guys want to platoon up sometime. I've got a tier 4, 5, and 6 I can roll with you guys once you get up to those levels (which I doubt will take you long).

I have almost 50K silver? or whatever the free currency is.. but I can't figure out how to get into a new tank. I was able to get from the n00b tank, to the first one, but now I can't research for a new tank for some reason.

Did everyone just buy the gold to get started or are most people upgrading through experience and winning games?

I guess it doesn't pop open a window if you are already in a battle, but I responded when I was in the lobby. I added you as a friend... but haven't seen any indicator that says "SPDRACER152 IS ONLINE" or anything like that.. but I'll keep an eye out.

This is by far my greatest match ever, I am not very good, just had a Tier 4 and below game and my tank was a badass.

Edit: For some reason it updated that as my most kills in a match, but did not update my most exp in a match. Any idea why not, I had a blast on that one.

Look at the circled part, 6,900 exp and 3 awards for one match....

Also, once you get higher tier, you can get 20k+ per match if you do well.

The retired cav/recon scout in me just can't demote myself into becoming a DAT and tooling around in a tank. ;p Though it does look fairly well done as far as tank game goes. I've look over some of the screen shots and look over the web site.

Guess there is a World of Airplanes in the works to, not sure if it is being done by the same company that does this game. Makes me long for my old Thrustmaster rig I used to use in Mechwarrior/Airwarrior on GEnie with throttle, joystick and peddles.

Figured it out, from today through Sunday, it is 5x EXP for first win instead of the usual 2 in honor of Father's Day.

5x is still going on and the new American TDs are awesome. I've been quite happy with the Tier 6 M36 Slugger, but most of the guys I am with really prefer the Tier 7 T25 AT which is ludicrously fast.

Yea, I wasted all my free EXP on the Ferdie, really wishing I pumped that into American TDs. They fit my play style a lot better.

I just researched all the upgrades for the T20 and now look forward to the next tank. The Pershing seems to almost be downgrade to my T20 based on my play style... less speed, same damage, more armor.

I think I might go over to the Slugger.. or work deeper into the SPG tree (I'm tier 5 now)... but I don't think I'll continue down the medium tree.

I continue to get hammered by IS3s.. so that would be my suggestion.

Thanks for the input, I have been leaning towards the IS route. I was not very happy at all with the T20, but I do not think my play style fits mediums very well. I tend to like to sit there and take hits while aiming carefully.

Yea.. I'm more of a hit and run type of player. My favorite tank is still the M5.. so damn fast and fully upgraded, it hits equal tier tanks like a truck. Awesome for scouting.

I think I've finally ground to a halt with this game. I have one of each tier tank except Tier 1 with 100% and sometimes multiple secondary skillset crews.

IS-7 just wasn't a big upgrade from the IS-4 (same gun, more armor on the body, but gets tracked just as often). I really like the KV-13, KV with the 107, the Leopard, and the Slugger and I enjoy running random battles with those, but other than that I've not really found what I want to keep doing in the game these days other than just play a random battle or two.

My clan could never compete in the strategic clan war since apparently you need like 100 people to do it regularly to defend captured territory. I really wish they had implemented the mercenary system they had proposed where you could get a couple of guys together and join up with a few other platoons and try to take on a team for a territory and win a bit of gold.

It was a great time sink for the past few months though, and this is perfect timing since the BF3 beta will be starting next month.

Protip of the day: DO NOT GO DOWN MULTIPLE TREES (like I may or may not have done) STICK WITH THE SAME TREE AND GET TO HIGHEST TIER.

I ended up going to T7 in all four trees.. which is such a waste of time. Personally, play around with the initial tanks and figure out what type of tank you want to play. I would suggest the heavy tank.. since they can take a beating as well as deal a beating.

As far as country... I went with US. I would probably do Soviet tanks.. the IS tanks seem to be the best, but opinions vary.

Update 7.2 came out today. Bunch of new tanks, maps, and 22(!) new skills to have your tankers earn. Changes the game dramatically. I think I may pick it up again myself.
