I'm glad I didn't have to work this past weekend, because I probably would have been in tears for most of the afternoon.
Apparently on Sunday one of the workers on the receiving dock (I work @ a casino for those of you who don't know) found a car with a dog locked inside. The windows weren't rolled down even a crack, and in fact, the dog was strapped down to the seat with the seatbelt.
They called a valet over and they broke open the car. My supervisor showed me the video of them busting in and then someone running towards the main building, this limp puppy in his arms. It was 170 degrees inside that car.
Fortunately, they were able to revive the dog (a german shepherd puppy) by putting ice packs under its armpits and near its crotch. Animal control was called and they put a citation on the car, and took the dog to the vet. The owners will have to pay the fine and the vet bills to get the dog back (as if they should even be able to!)
The owners are going to be charged with animal cruelty, so we spent the better part of yesterday reviewing tapes to see how long the dog had been there, and pulling inside shots to see if we could get a face on the person who left the animal there. The result is that the dog was in the car for approximately 10 hours - from about 5am to about 2pm.
I know he'll be punished, but I'd like to see the person who did this strapped down in a hot car for 10 hours and see how HE likes it.
There is a special punishment reserved somewhere for people who abuse animals. It's one of the most cowardly things I think you can do. Though the last word on the dog is that he's doing OK, he will probably have brain damage.
Anyway, I'm thinking this would make a good news story and maybe an angry mob would form and drown this guy in a vat of boiling butter.

That makes me sick to my stomach. That had to be purposeful torture or an attempt to kill the puppy. There's no way the owners should be able to get that dog back. In fact, they should go to their house and take any other pets or children they might have.

I think if you're convincted of animal cruelty you shouldn't be allowed to own an animal, even a golfish.

Don't underestimate the power of human stupidity. But I agree: no pets. No children. Fucking moron.

Okay. Most of you know how pissed off I get when someone tells other people on these boards to die.
In a situation like this, however, people who pull this shit deserve to get cancer and die a slow painful death.
Animals have no voice. They cannot unlock and open car doors, they cannot tell when they are suffering. People need to be responsible and shit like that just winds me up. If you do this to an animal you should be fined out the ass and spend a week in jail. No animal deserves that sort of shit.

I spent 5 years in college (more than 4 will become apparent in a sec) and the first 4 studying to be a vet... I worked for a vet for the last 3 years of the four. After 3 years of working for a vet I decided there was no way I could become a vet, because I absolutely hated the PEOPLE that come to the clinics. So I changed my degree and spent another year in college.
Yes, 95% probably even 98% of the people are great. However, it is the bad experiences that you don't forget, and I know I'd just go off on some person and get sued by them.
One thing the doctor I worked for said to me the second week I worked there, that I will never forget. "If you are thinking of getting a pet, there is responsibility on your part to know if you can afford it. If it gets sick, you are responsible to do what you can to make them well. If you cannot afford a sudden 250 dollar vet bill, don't get a pet." That should be tattoo'd on people's heads.
People like the one you described Spun, deserve to be hit by the karma train.
What is nice, is that for every jackass like the one you described, there are probably a hundred that would spend every cent they have to save the life of their animal companion. What's sad is that there is even one jackass out there.

Yeah, that story makes me sick as well. I enjoy watching animal cops/animal precinct and other animal cop shows..... to a point. I enjoy seeing the owners who neglected their pets have charges pressed against them and seeing the dogs nursed back to health and given to good families. I have to change the channel when I see a dog with a 30 pound tumor hanging off part of it's body and the owner saying "Oh, I thought he looked alright".
I think abuse to this extent (and further) should be a felony. Maybe that'll teach the owner to treat pets a little better.

Thankfully, the dock worker saw this poor little puppy trapped and was able to arrange rescue. We can only hope there will be no serious after-effects of the abuse.
As far as the person who did this, if they would do that to a puppy, what is to say they would not do the same to a baby? Both are helpless. Both need love, nurturing, and prudent care. The person who left that puppy strapped to the seat of the car is not responsible enough...not even human enough...to have ANY life in his/her hands. No pet, no child, nobody should have to be dependent on such a monster.

Disgusting. These people shouldn't be allowed anywhere near another pet or child in the future regardless of the punishment for this particular incident.
I am happy the puppy was saved.

Yeah, who'da thought that someone would forget about their dog in a casino, where there's no clocks and the entire environment is set to make sure you forget about everything besides gambling.
I'm not saying it excuses Mr. Lock a Dog in a Car, but let's look at the whole picture here.

True Latrin but who the hell brings their dog to the casino when they know they're going to gamble?
I've never been to Vegas, so I have zero experience but even *I* know about all that stuff you said. The way the environment is set up so you forget all about time and such..and how the drinks keep rolling so you can keep on spending and spending. I wouldn't go into a casino knowing I'm gonna gamble with my pet in the car.

Hey, when it comes to pets, I throw up my hands. People do all kinds of crazy stuff. Let it lick their face? Put it in their car? Clean up it's crap? Touch it after it's been rolling in God knows what all day? Blech.
Like I said, it's still Mr. Stupid's fault, clearly. But this is something casinos should anticipate if they're going to be run that way.

In Detroit, the same thing happened.
Excpet instead of a car, it was her two kids that cooked to death while she got her hair and nails done.

There was a donkey that got tortured to death at a Washington park in 1992. At the time, Washington's animal cruelty laws had not been updated for nearly 100 years, making the greatest penalty for this crime a $50 fine. Some people lobbied to make animal cruelty a felony in Washington State:
RCW 16.52.205 Animal cruelty in the first degree.
(1) A person is guilty of animal cruelty in the first degree when, except as authorized in law, he or she intentionally (a) inflicts substantial pain on, (b) causes physical injury to, or (c) kills an animal by a means causing undue suffering, or forces a minor to inflict unnecessary pain, injury, or death on an animal.
(2) Animal cruelty in the first degree is a class C felony.

Poor dog... :sniffle:
Whenever I hear of these stories, I get :flamed:
.
Though, I had it happen to me once, a few years ago.
I went into drug store, some 3-4 minutes later, some girl (with her mom) is asking folks who owns the red mustang in the parking lot.
She was upset that my dog, a Bouvier, was in the car, with windows closed and all.
It was 70 degrees, roughly 5pm-ish, in summer. I had the windows down while driving and put them up after parking. I didn't want someone breaking into car, or letting her out.
So I listened to her comments, and I said "look, I  my dog... she really enjoys car rides, and she'll be fine. I'm only here to buy a lottery ticket (was in line) and then picking up pizza at Little Caesars (two stores down, 1 min walk) after."
She seemed to calm down, but was still a bit upset over it. Was complaining unhappily to her mother as they went to their car, while glancing over at my car, as I left drugstore for the pizza.
Anyhow, my dog, a Bouvier, only had to spend 10 minutes like that. And I regularly do that lottery+pizza routine twice a week.
Still do with two dogs now.
I always roll down the windows slightly, if I anticipate being indoors doing whatever errand for more than 30 minutes. They almost go everywhere with me, except work/school, or any instances that I know that would leave them in car for more than 2 hours (no fun for them then).

Unfortunately, there has been quite a bit of this in Las Vegas, and the dogs haven't been making the news - the kids have.
I just saw a news special the other day where they re-visited a story about a dad, a TEACHER at that, who left his baby in a hot car all day in April of last year. He varied his morning routine by one stop and forgot to drop off his baby at day care. With the baby in the back seat of the car sleeping, he parked the car at school and went inside, not realizing his kid was in there ALL DAY LONG.
Of course, the baby died. People are just irresponsible, bottom line, and no amount of clocks or no clocks, drinks or no drinks, in any area, is going to combat that. The only solution, I guess, is to make the penalties so harsh that people think twice.
