best ambush weapon for THW?

does ambushing with THW make you miss more?

how is the DS vs a sword/board build?

That's up for debate. Maul vs Matt vs Claidh. Take your pick.

You won't be as accurate with your swings but you'll be pretty deadly so I say that makes up for the lower accuracy.

Not very good. You'll have low DS in the beginning levels and overall since a board is pretty good protection based on size.

Ambushing with a THW does technically make you miss the head once in a million years at cap with max ambush and perception but you'll deck whatever you hit anyway since it hits so hard and you finish it with another try.

Claid? What is the current consensus on crit weighting and ambushing? I figured if you're 2xing in ambush it would be mostly worthless and that higher enchant is better. Am I wrong on this?

Maul. Crush only, faster, and easier to aim. At cap with only 1x ambush and 1x cman you'll rarely miss.

be unique, ambush with a flail, hell does anyone hunt with flails at all?

I did with my rogue. It had the best damage factor against pretty much all tritons in the temple and it owned big.

I did when I had a 5x perfect with HCW, then Khaladon fixed his "mistake". I also used the black ora one for a while. Though, Throgg uses them to BOP stuff, so their cool factor has dropped substantially.

Quarterstaff.

Still crush only, even faster, even easier to aim. At cap with actually trained ambush and cman, you'll still have points for various other activities so you can't justify being an undertraining whore.

A single translucent vultite-alloy quarterstaff in the hands of a smart rogue is all you need to pretty much make Gemstone IV your bitch.

It's not difficult to hit aimed locations with THW in my opinion.

The DS will be worse than typical sword/board.

From a mechanics perspective, the pick is the maul. If it's unclear why, look at critical randomization, the critical tables for slash and crush, and the type of damage THWs do. The mattock is a close second, though.

Just a friendly reminder that perception plays no role in aimed attacks with melee weapons.

I did this with my empath and 118. It was the effect.

He didn't mention if he was ambushing from hiding or not and I still believe nomatter what anyone tells me, that perception is counted in to open ambushing success.

I thought the damage factor of a quarter staff made it completely unusable?

Not when you have 3x ambush. Yollia hunts with her bare fist from time to time and does very well with it. Yes, it is ironic that a male playing a female rogue fists stuff to death.

...note my use of the word "smart". You don't hunt crit resistant/immune stuff, nor do you straight ambush anything with heavy armor on their head. It's about as lacking as hunting with a longbow, which is to say it is hardly limited at all.

You don't need to stance dance through single fights (sorry sword and board guy), you don't need to spend 7 seconds in hard roundtime offensive stance (sorry you-just-picked-up-a-single-chest-and-decided-to-swing-a-maul guy), and you don't need to spend a stupid amount of TPs on the armor, shield, and moc you'll never need.

You'll swing once, crack something in the head (and generally crit kill it if your AS isn't gimped), pop back into hiding, then repeat all within four seconds (or two if you nudge a haste imbed).
