EASTERN CONFERENCE
Seed 8, Rangers vs Seed 1, Washington
Seed 7, Buffalo vs Seed 2, Philadelphia
Seed 6, Montreal vs Seed 3, Boston
Seed 5, Tampa Bay vs Seed 4, Pittsburgh
(No Devils this year!)
WESTERN CONFERENCE
Seed 8, Chicago vs Seed 1, Vancouver
Seed 7, Las Angeles vs Seed 2, San Jose
Seed 6, Phoenix vs Seed 3, Detroit
Seed 5, Nashville vs Seed 4, Anaheim
First round predictions?
Without a lot of thought put into it... not even looking at any season stats...
In the east, I like Washington, Buffalo, Montreal, Pittsburgh. Washington has been HOT lately, they should make it past the first round. Philly has been feasting on loser points, and that won't fly in the playoffs. Both Buffalo and Philly are having goalie issues. If Ryan Miller comes back, no contest, good bye Philly. Boston always chokes, especially against Montreal, and Pittsburgh, even without the superstars, has too much grit to lose to a finesse team like Tampa in a 7 game series.
In the west, I like Vancouver, San Jose, Detroit, and Nashville. Vancouver is just a powerhouse, I don't think Chicago can handle them. LA's team has had a few key injuries, San Jose should run right over them. Detroit vs Phoenix... well, Detroit knows the situation... I'd be surprised if that series goes more than 5 games. I'd love to be wrong here, because everyone hates the Red Wings, unless you're unemployed... I mean, from Detroit. I'm not sure that Anaheim can find a way to beat Nashville. They gave the Ducks some troubles in the regular season, and play a solid team defense.
There you have it... what do YOU think?

I haven't been following too much lately but it seems to me Chicago has been struggling to get all their ducks in a row, so to speak. I think we'll have a better run at it next season.

I'm pretty sure that Chicago has some salary cap issues. I don't follow the west much, but that's part of the reason last year's cup team was dissected in the off-season. I stick to my original statement... I don't think Chicago can handle Vancouver this time around.
And for the record, I will be really disappointed if the Penguins don't make it to round 2. I miss Matt Cooke.

Oh, definitely had some salary cap issues. We had to trade a way an awful lot of talent, and not just talent but guys who had been working together (mostly) for a while at that point. I think that once they settle the lines a bit and get some ice time together, we'll start to click again. It's just going to take time to rebuild a bit. Our core is still pretty solid. Going to give you Vancouver, though- I think it's going to be a short, sad playoff season for us.
I'm a Philadelphia native, so I will be obviously cheering for the Flyers. Philly has had a goal tending issue since Pelle Lindbergh was killed. If they can produce the offense, I think they will do fine again this year. The choke at the end of the season was disconcerting. I took the empty net goal with 1 second left of the season against the Isles as a good omen. You got to look for hope somewhere.
There is so much scoring potential in the caps, the flyers, the pens, the bruins and the lightning, so making accurate predictions is tough. I do not think you will see very many low seeded teams making it the the second round, except for maybe maybe Tampa, if their legion of french men prevail.(sorry Gib) I am curious if Crosby is ready for playoff hockey, he seemed to have a pretty serious concussion for most season, mostly likely just being extra cautious. He is still one of the best if not the best in the league. Matt Cooke was a beast, he would look good in orange and black. The rangers are dead in the water...or on the ice, so to speak.
In the west. Chicago fails to Vancouver. That makes me happy, still depressed from last year. I do not know the other teams well enough to make my own opinions on them. I am superstitious, the beard is growing, looking forward to some good playoff hockey.

It is so weird that I am more into hockey in DC than I was in Madison...but I guess NCAA hockey legends like the Badgers were not enough underdogs for me to really get into it. I never would have pictured DC as a hockey town, but Ovie and the rest really get folks riled up...and they have at least the possibility of winning every time they get on the ice as opposed to the Redskins or Nats in their respective leagues.
GO CAPS!
Awww man, depressing start. The good thing about the two sports I watch, when one season ends in the fail, the next one is starting. So far, there has only been one season in recent history this has not been the case. 2008 world series.

The problem with Caps fans is they act like since they have a player like Ovi, they DESERVE to win. That's a far cry from a team like the Penguins, with a guy in the head office like Lemieux who is quick to humble players who have that sense of entitlement. You're not a winner until you win 16 in the post season... That's how the league defines greatness. I'm not sure why Ovi celebrates every goal like it's a game winner in game 7. He scores a lot... should really act like he's been there before.

So did the Flyers, last year. I really hope the bullies at least manage a goal. They're really missing Pronger too.
Actually the year that Buffalo went to the finals, I think they beat the flyers something awful like 8-0 in the last game of round 2? I tell you I have so many bad memories of Philly in the post season, it always comes back to me this time of year.

Alright, listen:
Blue Shirts won last night/early morning after I passed out, right? Cool, that's what I thought.
Also, pretend I'm also a fan of the greatest and hated MLB team in history:
Avery ... Needs to go against every Steinbrenner-esque clean cut NYY standard, apply it in hockey-form, board refs, while charging, while checking spines, while charging, while boarding, while unloading .38SPECs. And smoke lots of PCP.
And I despise that John-fucking-Rocker of the NHL wearing what might be by favorite NHL team's colors. But this is not, no... No. No. This is no. No. Okay? No. You got it? Good.

Hopefully Luongo's back remains hurt.
Doesn't matter right now, Vancouver will win 1 more game with or without Luongo.
UPDATE! I hate Detroit, who just swept Phoenix. I hope someone knocks those bastards with jobless fans out of the playoffs.
Vancouver 3 games to 1 over Chicago... Yup, let's knock Chicago out too. Teach them to dissipate a championship team because their ownership can't manage the cap year to year.
Sharks 2-1 over Kings in the series. I figured the injuries to the Kings would catch up to them before the end of the series. I'd like to see the Sharks do something in the post-season for a change.
Ducks/Thrashers series all tied up. I can see this one going to 7 games. Anyone's series.
Washington 3-1 over Rangers... I just don't think Princess Lunqvist and the rest of the Rangers can pull this one out, as much as I'd LOVE to see the Caps get knocked out. (I hate the Capitals, I hate them so much. I hate how they act like they're winners and haven't ever won shit. I hate how they celebrate every goal like it's a game 7 OT goal. Act like you've been there before ya classless Euro trash. I hate that fat ass whiny bitch of a coach they have too.)
Montreal 2-1 over Boston... I have a lot of faith in Boston to choke, and drop the series to the Habs.
Buffalo/Philly series locked at 2 games a piece. All those 20+ goal scores the Flyers had this season don't seem to mean anything to Ryan Miller. Buffalo will win the series unless Pronger comes back to the lineup, and I hear that's a pipe dream. Injuries aren't too well disclosed around playoff time, but rumor is Pronger has some broken bone somewhere that is keeping him off the ice. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy... maybe he'll get hit by a bus.
Finally, Pittsburgh is 3 games to 1 over Tampa, going back to Pittsburgh for Game 5. Tampa is hanging around, but I don't think they'll push the series to a 6th game. That Penguins team is FOR REAL, even without Crosby and Malkin. And I can't wait to see Cooke back for ROUND 2. He's a difference maker, so long as he can keep it clean.

Philly Buffalo may be locked at 2 but both of the Sabre's wins have been 1-0. Pronger is back in the lineup friday but Carter is now out with what the rumors say is a torn ACL. Still think the Flyers are ok though, no real panic around the Philly area.

Man, I reallly really want to go see that Chicago game.
The flyers aren't going to win any games with a score like 1-0, if I'm right, they have not had a shutout all season. I'm hoping that the all star goal tender won't be a must for a team to win the cup in these days. Pronger needs to be in the lineup for them to win.
That's because Flyers pans are too dumb to realize how fucked they are. Miller looked brilliant last game.

'74-75- We won the cup vs Buffalo 4-2
77-78- Won vs Sabres in Quarterfinals 4-1

I don't know how we keep blowing these leads. 2-0, 3-1, and we lose 5-4 in OT?
And hell, we shouldn't be in this series, all 4 goals we got were ridiculous and should have been saved, all 5 of your goals Ryan Miller couldn't do anything about (except maybe not give up so many rebounds)...
And I'm still trying to figure out why we traded Danny Briere...he cost too much? Well guess what, he's fucking us now.

The puck goes in the net, nice or sloppy like, that's the objective of the game. If there is time on the scoreboard, there is time for a come back. You seem really unfamiliar with hockey, or at least the brief history of the modern era. The reason why you cannot figure out why Buffalo traded Briere is because he was not traded, he signed as an unrestricted free agent. He really helped turn the Flyers organisation around after Philly's worst season in years.
Miller is a beast, I have a lot of respect for him. He is keeping the Sabres alive. Philly needs a goal tender like him. I still like Boucher, but I am getting sick of the revolving door in the crease. It's anyones series to claim still.

If Philly had a goaltender like Miller, they'd win the Cup easy. I wonder if Ryan is thinking any blasphemous thoughts like that.
And trade or signed as an unrestricted free agent, the point is we didn't have the money to keep him, because we're a small town team with a small bankroll.
And obviously I understand how the game of hockey works, but our defense in years past has been our strong point, and our goals come off turnovers, good transition, etc. Our defense seems to be Ryan Miller right now, and Myers at times. It's inexcusable to blow two separate 2 goal leads, imo. Maybe I was spoiled growing up in the era of Dominic Hasek, IE the Dominator, where a 1 goal lead was money in the bank.
But then again, I admired NJ for playing the trap so well back then. The new NHL bothers me, but I was always a defenseman.

Yeah we just picked it up this week so theres still a lot of work to be done on it. We are searching around currently to find the best deal or possibly a sponsor for a vinyl wrap for the entire thing. Going to deck it out for Temple U sports but itll be used for all Philly tailgating really. Picked up and installed an inverter so we can run all of the power outlets and lights inside from the second battery while the ambulance is off. Ordered a fridge that we will turn into a kegorator that will fit perfectly into one of the storage compartments. Brought out a few of our old flat screens and set them up inside and hooked them up to the ambulances antennae so we can get basic TV channels which happened to include the phillies game from that day as well as the Flyers pregame show. Also hooked up an old N64 to one of the TVs so we can get our Mario Kart/drunk driving on.
I cant wait for the Temple vs Penn State football game where we get to tailgate on the drive out... 2 hour game of asshole while driving down the turnpike ftw.
edit: oh yeah and im taking an old grill and securing it to the stretcher so it can be pushed easily into the ambulance when were done with it.

The part that bothers me about the goaltending situation is that our defense doesnt seem to care or wake up until the goalie is pulled then they start doing the things that made them successful in the beginning.

Man I haven't used that name since Olie the goalie was the only saving grace, and 3 seats from the glass was $70. But seriously, not sure who to blame for the capitals mailing it in since they've gotten passed the first round. Poor Neuvirth is playing solid, and although the scores may reflect otherwise, while watching the games he seems to be the only one truly in it. The offense has resigned itself to trying to win from behind (classic post-season capitals the last 3 years) and those horrible line changes and lackluster defensive structure has really crippled them. I hope they win tonight, just so they avoid the sweep.

Nice ambulance. only 2 batteries? Around here, I'm pretty sure they stuff at least 4 car batteries into an ambulance. Regardless, sweet tailgating ride.
4 car batteries maybe but these are rather heavy duty batteries.
LETS GO PHILLIES!!! Huh, what, wait?

In Philly the sentiment is "at least the pens got knocked out in the first round".
Maybe us PA people (I don't even live there anymore, but still) can pretend to be friends and pick a team to root for together.
Nah, that sounds boring. Lets go (insert the team that Gib doesn't want to win here)!

Pens went 7 games without their 2 top guns because of injury, and without Matt Cooke because Colin Campbell is a biased retard (Sorry if any retards were offended) not fit for the job he holds. All this after mostly everyone had them all but written off 40-some games into the season when Crosby went out. When the playoffs end, you reflect on the season. 2nd best record in Penguins team history. Came down to a tiebreaker with Philly for the division. And, I'd way prefer to lose a game 7 than to win it, and get swept the next series. I guess I can rationalize it as only losing 1 game, as opposed to losing 4 straight.

Not really trying to justify the sweep cause there was little excuse but given the way the Flyers vs Bruins series went last year I dont think it really shocked many Flyers fans this year.

Frankly I won't be surprised if Boston beats San Jose for the cup.
I would like to see Mark Recchi get another up before he retires.

I like Mark Recchi. I hate Boston more than I like Mark Recchi.

Yeah I was considering this too. After watching last nights game, I think I would rather see Gagne hoist the cup over his head. It is always a shame to see players you like leave your favorite team.

thats insane. Hes been playing lights out this offseason and just furthers my belief that Philadelphia will continue my bridesmaids theory(we've lost to the team that won it all for every major sport where we made the playoffs for the past 8 or 9 seasons, pretty much since winning the world series) for another sporting season.
Vancouver VS Boston, who wants to place bets?

Fuck Boston.
I really hate feeling like Boston doesn't even make the finals if Colin Campbell wasn't the head of discipline for the league for this season. Add another "*" next to a Boston team's championship.

I thought Campbell allowed someone else to determine all penalties involving the Bruins this season to avoid a conflict of interest

Please Gib, for the love of God, and you know I adore ya...
Bruins, came, saw and kicked ass.
It was brutal series, 2 players, one on each side were injured severely. Another was tossed for the remainder.
But as Dennis said, Campbell recused himself.
Yah, in the 2000s, the Patriots, Celtics, Red Sox, and finally the Bruins won, its been 39 years gang, I was a 2 year old then, the Sox in 2004 was an epic of my life, etc.
Gimme a break, there is no *, there was an asskicking last last night. 4-0.
Deal bro. :)

Colin Campbell didn't rule on anything re: Bruins this season because of Gregory being on the team. You can't complain too much about the league's discipline when you look at the first star of game 2, man. I didn't wager a comment on the board last night because I'm not a gloater, and as stoked as I was I would have. It was a classic final, a total rollercoaster. I had Habs-sized hate for the Canucks for two weeks. It was good for hockey if you just love the game. I'm glad my team won, but it would have been a blast to watch regardless.

Campbell ruled on enough things this year to make his bias well known and swing the pendulum in Boston's favor. He had a real opportunity to set a precedent for high head hits when he threw the book at Matt Cooke because he was unhappy with Lemiuex's comments. A week later, Charra almost breaks some dude's neck along the turnbuckle, and gets NOTHING, and Todd Bertuzzi laid a textbook hit to the head and got next to nothing as well. The lack of OBJECTIVE penalties/fines/suspensions laid out across the league for the same exact thing is why I say he's a cheat, and why Boston didn't deserve this. FUCK BOSTON.

I'm so happy for Dan Bylsma for being awarded the Jack Adams (Coach of the year) award. No sense in reliving the season's obstacles. From a Pittsburgh/Local view, it was a no brainer that Bylsma deserved it, but to have the Broadcaster's Association to recognize and honor the performance makes the outcome of the season a little less bitter. (That and I can always look back and laugh about Philly getting swept in Round 2.)
On aside note, there was no way anyone but Tim Thomas was getting the Vezina after the showing he put up against Vancouver. I was hopeful for Fleurry, but it's hard to compete when the final act puts on a show like that.
