you might consider untraining all the spell ranks above 107,

i think its too costly to get to 120 that early. Maybe closer to cap it would be better.

He's 1x in spells, how is that too costly?

120 rules for defense early on, specially if you are not using a shield. I would personally knock it back to .8x spells to pick up some more combat related skills, but that is just me. Though shooting for 1635 will increase your survivability a whole hell of a lot, so that might be the best stopping point.

1x spells for a paladin requires sacrifice in other areas. I think its worth getting 107 and 1630 asap so if your 35 trains then 1x spells would make sense but it will cost you in other areas ofcourse. Once you reach that threshold you can stop learning spells for a long time and catch up in other areas.

the harness power at 45 ranks and spirit mana control is also a bit much i would think, if you wanted to raise dead you would need the mana control but you dont have that spell so i would either get that or untrain all the mana control until you do.

i would very strongly suggest untraining all the dodging and ambush ranks, these trainings are nearly useless to you assuming you want to stick with edged weapons and a shield.

if it was me, i would take minor spirit down to 107 and paladin up to 1630 and leave it at that for a good while.

I think one of the best features of being a paladin is that you can cast in the field while wearing plate class armor. So armor use at 90 ranks for mbp is what i would do and to me this would be the highest priority since is really a core part of what makes a Paladin a Paladin.

id also get religion lore up to 25 ranks and blessings up to 20 ranks.

other suggestions include, 1x perception, and 2x physical fitness, and eventually 2x shield. These are just thresholds to go for in my opinion and you wouldn't necessarily be able to retrain to all these levels at 45 trains.

this all just comes from my personal preferances, there is no right answer or perfect build.

in reference to all this I have a level 27 pally - with no help from outside sources (i.e. spell slaves), is it best to level ohe or 2h while grinding thru to cap? Pros and Cons?

Do you like offense or defense?

Offense...but I still value survivability and speedy hunting more...so is there a compromise somewhere?

There is a compromise, involving ambushing the head of squishy creatures from the open using the best OHE/OHB you can get your hands on. I would suggest a Superior/Perfect Morning Star and a tower shield. If you are going without spells from other players/MAing, you should at a minimum consider a decent amount of MIU. Leave scrolls alone, but you can get a very reliable source of Small Statues, Strength, etc from items. Pay Sharnath or someone like her to imbed 503 in a raisable rod and gain a great amount of DS.
