View Full Version : Ambush Crunch - what are the factors

Ambushing is great. Especially with a maul.

What factors are there?

From Krakipedia (http://www.krakiipedia.org/wiki/AMBUSH_(verb))

The factors that influence the chance of successfully attacking the body part aimed for include:

difficulty of the particular body part targeted (smaller and more critical parts of the body are harder to aim for)
the difficulty modifier for the weapon used (larger weapons are harder to aim)
difference in attacker and target level
the attacker's Ambush skill
the attacker's Combat Maneuvers skill (when aiming from the open, as opposed to from hiding)
any eye or bleeding head wounds the attacker may have

First: how big of a modifier is there for body part sizes? Do those sizes change relative to race (ie is ambushing a Giant's head easier than a Kobold due to size?)?

Second: What do the mods look like for various weapons? Does anyone know? Do the mods change based purely on size? Weight? Skill used? Is it easier to aim a blunt vs an edged vs a pierced? How big of a factor is weight? Does a max lightened Lance ambush significantly better than a standard weight?

Third: How much does Ambush skill factor in for Open Ambushing?

Fourth: What is the effect of CMAN skill when it comes to Open Ambushing?

Fifth: Since Wspec and Bond both add +2 cman bonus per rank, how significant of an impact do they have on Open Ambushing?

Sixth: How much do stats factor into the equation? If they do, what stats matter the most? I am speaking about ambush success - ie finding an opening AND hitting your target, not RT.

You're asking for a bunch of questions that are very hard to quantify because we have no rolls to look at.

Even without seeing the rolls, none of the warriors around here have any subjective - if not objective - information?

I swing two-handed weapons, and am fully doubled in CM.

I was told that adding 40 ranks of Ambush would pretty much max out my chance of aiming from the open with two-handed weapons.

Was that because the size of the weapon? I'm wondering at what point I hit that with a morning star.

I'm currently singled in ambush and wouldn't mind freeing up those points so I can get to plate a bit faster.

I can only answer #4. CM ranks are basically equal to ambush ranks when it comes to open aiming success.

I believe it's been documented somewhere, that aiming is based on CM skill and Ambush skill . Consequently, your ROI from Ambush is going diminish at 40 ranks.

Yes, that's what I meant to imply. A 41st rank of Ambush only increases your Ambush skill by +1.

The first ten ranks of Ambush net you +5 Ambush skill a piece.
The second ten ranks of Ambush net you +4 Ambush skill a piece.
The third ten ranks of Ambush net you +3 Ambush skill a piece.
The fourth ten ranks of Ambush net you +2 Ambush skill a piece.

Anything after that is just +1 to Ambush skill.
