View Full Version : Society: Voln vs Sunfist?

Hello, I was wondering which society people prefer and why. Please link if there are previous debates on this subject, I wasn't able to unearth any.
I've tried all 3 societies on various characters, and I recognize that each society can be more conducive to particular classes or styles of playing. But for my lance-wielding Bard I can't decide between Voln and Sunfist, and as I have never actually completed Sunfist (tho I have completed Voln) I don't feel I can weigh the societies equally.
I know, there's "society reset" for a reason, but both these societies are so time consuming that I'd rather not change my mind halfway (or further) through.
So if anyone has a strong opinion either way, or any opinion, or feels like talking, I'd love the input! Thank you.

Voln if you like poverty. Sunfist if you like hunting everywhere.
Unless you have a strong RP reason to be in Voln (or you want voln fu) don't join it. It is easily the worst of the 3 societies.

Voln Fu is a helluva CvC mechanic.

bard wouldnt need voln fog with 1020 though. Wont need fu if hes wielding a lance(not enough TPs). Hands down go GoS
Voln fog takes so much favour. As someone who is perpetually out of favour and has to at least once a week go slum it in some undead area for an hour to build up a measly amount, I hate it.

Thanks a lot! Very straightforward. I did Voln back before Sunfist was created so I was a little partial - tho I suspected a Sunfist landslide. Sounds like Voln is simply outdated.
I think outdated is exactly what's wrong with it. Good call.
There hasn't been a good reason to go Voln other than fog and resistance (although minor) to fear since Symbol of Dreams got whacked.

If you are a brawler, Voln is the best society in the world for you. Otherwise, it is just there for RP.
Voln was a good society when symbol of dreams helped you level quicker and death had actual consequences.

I kicked Nuadjha in the head once ;) And I punched Drektar in the face, which was very satisfying... I'm not saying you should ever try this, but Voln does have it's perks :)

Yeah I totally pwned Gelston's warrior when I was still in voln despite being lower level. Fu was fun but I have no regrets from switching to GoS a few weeks ago.
AKOE!

You should definitely do what's best. The only reason I stick with Voln is because I think it fits the character, but GOS has some really neat skills.

For my cleric, its an RP choice, but i'd be lost without voln fog, just part of him.
For everyone else, GOS
Except...
Mages/Sorcerers - CoL - wracking still rules for mana, maybe even empaths and clerics. I've pondered it hard for Avantos, just can't DO it.

Voln's a good choice for smite clerics, since you'll master by 25 just hunting normally.
As for its assets, Voln fog is great for its constant location and lack of mana cost. Voln Fu is awesome for anyone who trains in brawling, and is a major factor in favor of going brawl/shield as an otherwise pure casting cleric. Symbol of restoration is an often overlooked asset, but is a lifesaver - spammable +50 HP, no RT of any kind. Ironically, thanks to that and the inherent brokenness of Broke Fu, I'd guess that Voln makes the best society for PvP. If you don't brawl, Fu is a liability - kicking something/someone in offensive stance automatically activates Fu, with sometimes hilarious results (20 RT, falling over and killing yourself, etc.). Symbol of Mana has a big favor cost and monetary cost in deeds, but no immediate mechanical downside and is spammable. I've made use of this to good effect in invasion/CvC scenarios, but it's not something I'd consider an everyday useful ability.
Voln's definitely dated though, and the other societies have more abilities that are useful in normal situations.
