There was a group in Solhaven the other night offering services. I had died and wanted some spirit spells so I figured "hey why not?"
This is what happened. ( and yes I did clean it up but can send the whole thing to whoever wants it)
[Solhaven, North Market South]
A young lad in a tattered tunic sits begging in front of a half-timber store front, fending off any that would encroach on his domain with a deadly glare. To the north, the hawking of merchants, arguments of bargainers and shuffle of wares and boots combine to form an almost pleasant din. You also see an old barrel with a white ceramic cup on it.
Also here: Qwauntzy, Brynnely, Arinaar who is sitting, Lady Zynne who is sitting, Lady Jadiana who is sitting, Great Lady Greeka who is sitting
Obvious paths: north, east, west
You softly say, "Might I have some spirit spells please."
Greeka nods to you.
Brynnely softly asks, "What spell numbers ya want?"
NUMBERS??
You softly say, "Any spirits I believe Im empty."
Brynnely softly says, "I can do spirit spells."
You softly say, "Please."
(WAITED FOR SEVERAL MINUTES)
Brynnely softly says, "No clue what spells do what though."
You blink.
You quietly whisper to Brynnely, "You dont know what your spells do?"
Brynnely whispers, "Nope... I just adopted this char off a friend who was
leavin the lands."
(So I gave up and asked a passing friend)
You quietly whisper to Kyntair, "Can I have some spells? Can we go east of here?"
Kyntair whispers, "Aye..."
You quietly whisper to Kyntair, "Bryn informs me he bought this character."
(ok maybe not bought but just as bad)
You quietly whisper to Kyntair, "And has no idea what his spells do."
Greeka whispers, "Did she help with yer spells."
Kyntair warmly says, "Be right back."
Kyntair gently takes hold of your hand.
Great Lord Kyntair's group just went east.
[Solhaven, North Market SE]
Sooty smoke belches from a chimney precariously perched atop a stone building. An old man leans against the outer wall, slowly sharpening his blade with a coarse whetstone. An engraved imflass sign hangs from a metal bar mounted above the entrance.
Also here: Great Lord Kyntair
Obvious paths: north, east, southeast, west, northwest
Kyntair gestures while calling upon the lesser spirits for aid...
Kyntair gestures at you.
A deep blue glow surrounds you.
You softly say, "What a dope."
Kyntair gestures while calling upon the lesser spirits for aid...
Kyntair gestures at you.
A deep blue glow surrounds you.
Kyntair nods to you.
Kyntair grins.
You softly say, "Gads."
You focus your mind on Greeka and think: "sorry she whispered she just took
over the character and has no idea what spells are what.. maybe she needs to read up on them."
Roundtime: 5 sec.
You give Kyntair a friendly hug.
You softly say, "Thanks."
Kyntair hugs you, and you wrap him in a warm embrace.
Kyntair warmly says, "Welcomes."
If this was just a radom person it wouldn't have hit me as bad...
But for an organization to advertise its services and then have this happen was annoying.
Just hit me wrong. At least read up on the spells and make sure you can work the profession before trying to use it...

Wow, why even bother with coming in the game if you dont know what your spells are, or how to use them. What a ditz.

There are a few situations I've seen (okay, just one) where someone bought a body and knew how to use it just fine, and RPed that body in an awesome way. One can only daydream about this being the rule rather than the exception.
Don't even get me started on "borrowing."

I haven't seen you, Bob, I wasn't talking about you.
But I guess there's hope that it's happened more than once. Bob Hope! Haha, I kill myself.

Something I never understood.
WHY DON'T THESE ASSHATS EVER READ THE DOCS???
I start to play a game, I read the rules. That's how I know how to play.

Well, when I play a character I haven't played in awhile, I sometimes forget the spells and numbers (like I never play my ranger and always have to look up the spells -- but no longer, thank you PsiNet!). Anyway, at least I can look em up and know, oh yeah, 101 was light blues, duh.

This character never made any effort.
The cleaned log doesn't show it, but I waited a good five minutes form the time she asked for numbers until I left.
She was waiting for me to feed her numbers.

Who cares if she bought or barrowed or receieved the charachter. YOU asked her for spells. If she's sitting there trying to figure things out good for her, you shouldn't assume because you asked for them you would receieve them from her. And that was kinda out of line saying she bought a charachter when she said she recieved it.

Well...their clan or group or whatever was offering the spells. He didn't walk up to random people asking them for spiritual spells.
If an organization is to offer spells publically, you would think that they would place someone in charge of that detail who is capable of carrying the task out.

I dont think that that specific person is a member of Clan Snar. Greeka I know is part of the clan and they do their services quite often around elanthia. I would guess that the person saw them advertising and just wanted to help out or saw you ask for spells and decided to cast them for you. If you notice, Greeka also asked you if she could help, if they were in the same group they would have worked it out between them who would cast the spells. Just a few observations.

If someone started and rolled a warrior, got a few levels. Then a friend, the one who got them started goes, hey, take my level 30 empath, im quiting. you expect them to say no? thats not right? I mean, we frown on it bassically cause we feel its cheap or hate talking to a "friend" only to learn theyre no longer your friend. But look at it from their point of view. and in that case it might just take a few days to figure out the spells ::shrug:: Hell, I forget what spells do what sometimes even after 13 years. Hell if I cant remember what spell untrammel is without looking it up when I need it which sucks, or with the new spells for wizards? after I took a break I played for a month without knowing the new defensive spells!

The thing is Pierat it does relect badly on Clan Snar when something like this occurs. For a start it makes us look unprofessional when we are actually trying to be helpful and provide a service(s). We do get some folks offering to help out who are'nt Clan members and maybe we need to tighten up on this. We certainly do not want people to get the wrong impression of us as Amaron has right now. I will mention this to Greeka and see if we can do something to prevent this happening again.

I think 90% of the debate about bought/sold char's is mostly perception.
I'm the first one to admit I play a bought char. I did not make Adredrin from scratch. I'm fine with that fact, and it sits well with me.
BUT!
I have also played GS since the AOL days, I've leveled my own chars up to 30+ myself, and I've put in the time to learn my areas of the game. I did not get Adredrin to become a pushy bastard in game that throws his levels around. I got Adredrin because I wanted to experience the game at high levels, and I knew no mater what, I'd never make it there on my own (which is prooven over and over by the fact that Adredrin has only made...3 levels I think, since I got him over a year ago.)
I feel personally, I've had a good experience with the deal. A *lot* of people know about the old Adredrin (who was a well known boulder member, and I'm told a "hot head"). But, every single person I've run into that was friends with the old Adredrin (or not so friendly with him) knows right away its not the same person. I've been told many times they can tell because I actually RP, which I guess the old owner did very little of.
Since I've taken over Adredrin, I've helped form a large storyline between me and Spun (and Darknesswithin, Vixen, and heck, even Chica and Edine! ;). What I have NOT done (in my personal view), is taken my 80+ levels (GS3), and thrown them in everyones face, using it as an excuse to do what ever I damn well please. This is because that stuff is a huge pet peeve of mine.
So, if people feel the need to judge me on the fact that I have and play a char I did not make myself, feel free to do so. But I damn well expect the PLAYER to do it, and not the Char in game.
-Adredrin
PS. Actually, I should rephrase that..Adredrin was gifted to me by my old roomie as a birthday present. I did not actually buy him myself :)

I hold nothing against bought/sold charachters. If you think it's a problem then you take the game too far.

I was going hunting without the spells but when the offer came on the net I thought "sure sounds good."
I also corrected the "bought" part to my friend as yes I was and admitedly so in the wrong to say that.
I did not clean up that word in the log because I was not going to dr it beyond taking out the screen scroll.
I truely do not care who bought who and who owns who... But when you take that new character out in public, please try
and have some idea of how to work them.
And before offering spells please know what spells you are offering for goodness sake and how to cast them.
I was not begging just any stranger on thr streets. I was taking them up on the offer.
If this person was not of the group then I am sorry for dragging it down in any way.
In general my point was not that this group uses bought or recieved characters...
It was that those who buy and take over characters should know how to use them before doing something like offering services.
Sorry for any confusion. Have a great day.

There aren't that many defensive spells that empaths can cast on others to begin with. So if someone asks for defensive spells, you tend to already know what they are and just put them all on unless they say otherwise. I mean what are we talking about here, 101, 107, and 202?
The documentation for spells and such aren't the greatest on the official site, but at least it's something to go by instead of playing cold turkey and frustrating the people around you in a roleplaying game. Ah well.
Thank god I don't play my empath (or Gemstone for that matter) anymore. It was frustrating me more often than the enjoyment of playing.

Well if the issue isn't about it being bought/sold/barrowed.. change the topic title of your thread. Anyways, she at least seemed nice enough, I don't understand why you were even emotionally moved by this incident to make a thread on it. She was trying by asking you what spells you wanted, maybe it was a little idiotic on her part.. or maybe she wasn't part of the group. Anyway, just give somone a website to guide onto next time, rather then a thread to embaress her.

This thread is about folks that buy/ borrow characters.
People who do so should learn to use them before publicly offering services. So I will leave it as is.
Maybe you cannot see what is wrong with it, but to me and others it is wrong.
She was going OOC by asking aloud for what number spell I wanted. That in itself is annoying.
So, in general, if you borrow/ buy/ take over a character please learn to use them.
Thanks
Have a great day.

You are still missing one point. The said person was not a member of the organization who was advertising their help. I spoke with Greeka and it was confirmed. A person should put in a little effort with a new character to learn their spells, granted, but you can't go around and bash people who OFFERED YOU spells. Beggers cant be choosers.

Part of the group or not, call me a RP elitist, but if someone asks me if I'd like spells, I say yes, and then tell me "hold on I'm letting my dog out so I'm AFK so just shout the numbers at me", I'm walking.

I dont blame you for walking. I just dont like the blame that is being pointed at Clan Snar. Greeka herself told me that if she had seen that happen she would have helped that person herself. I also do find it wrong to complain about something being offered as a free service. Im not saying that you shouldn't have walked away from the situation, but you had other options as well. Knowing they were new you could have helped them but chose not to.
